SOUTH F.ItN EDUCATION.
THE TEABODY TRUSTEES REPORT AGAINST
MIXED SCHOOLS.
New Toni;, October 19.—Tho commit
tee of Iho Poahcdy fund trustees, eon-
sisting of W. M. Evarts, John H. Clifford
and Hnmnel Wetmore, appointed to con
sider tho subject of mixed schools in the
South, report that after most careful com
parison of opinions and tho most solicit
ous consideration of all the elements of
tho discussion affecting the interest of
education in various States for their white
and colored population, they havo unani
mously come to tho conclusion that tho
prospects and hopes of the public sys
tem of education at the South
will rccoivo a serious if not a fatal blow
from any legislation which should make
such systems of education maintainable
only on a scheme of mixed schools. As
to tho organization required for such pub
lic education, the Board are of the opin
ion that while justice and public duty,
ns well as llie interests and feoliugA of the
white and colored poople of the South,
concur in domonding a system of public
education which should give equal
opportunities and equal advauta^
tages to the children of cither color, that
no such result would bo promoted by tho
compulsory system of mixed schools.
Tho Committee, iu conclusion, say
these views aro fully set forth in the re*
