Wellborn.
The funeral services of this distin
guished jurist and divino took • place at
the First Rnptiat Church in this city Sun
day morning last at 11 ‘o’clock. Several
eity churches having suspended morn
ing services, an immense congregation
was in attendance, and many failing to
gain admittance returned home.
The opening prayer wus offered up by
Kev. A. Wright, of St. Paul M. E Church,
aud the scriptural collect read by Kev. M.
B. Hardin, of the LaGrange Baptist
Church, after which the funeral discourse
was preached by Kev. J. H. DeVotio, of
the First Baptist Church of Griffin, from
the following passagos found in 1st. Thcss.
4:13,14 ;
‘But I would not have you to bo igno
rant, brethren, concerning thorn which
are asloep, that yo sorrow not oven as
others which have no hope.
‘For if we believe that Jesus died and
rose again, eveu so, also, them which
sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.”
On these verses the Reverend Doctor
based one of the best efforts of his life.
With a heart overflowing with his mighty
theme, and subdued, r.n it wore, by a
sense of his own personal beroftvometft
in the loss of a true and tried friend, ho
was peculiarly happy in thoughts aud elo-
quout in words. He spoke of the various
grudos of sorrow and its effects upon the
lives and characters ot different individu
als—in other words, of tho sorrow which
is hopeless, in comparison with that
which is tinged with the sweet rainbow
prisms of Christian hope and consolation.
To those nnsustained by tho precious
promises of tho gospel, heraavcincut is
indeed dark and torriblo—unrelieved by
a single ray of bright and cheering hope.
While to those whose souls arc alive to
God, who hang confidingly upon
His overy prom iso, tho death of
Christian friends is rather a inattor
for rejoicing than gloomy despondency.
For, if woindcod believe “that Jesus diod
and roso again,” and that those who
sleep in him, “will God bring with him,”
this faith is ablo to sustain and comfort
even in the darkest hours of personal
bereavement. The reverend gontlouinn
in conclusion of his discourse spoko fool-
ingly of the long yours of intimate friend
ship that had existed between himself and
deceased, of his conversion in tho groat
rovivul of 1858, of his entering upon and
self-denying labors iu tho luiuistry, of hia
conscientious rectitude as a man and
Cbristiuu, of his extonsivo privato chari
ties, and finally of his sudden and tri
umphant death. Tho sermon, though
lengthy, was listened to with unxveariod
attention from beginning to end.
Among tho ministers present wo no
ticed Itevn. J. S. Key, of St. Luke; A.
Wright, of Bt. Paul; J. II. Null, of tho
Presbyterian, Af; 13. ilardon, of La-
Grunge, aud MoKsrlfcj&omlrick, Slade and
Hicks, Baptist miniatvrs of this city and
