DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1874.
Tfee l*r«int»cd letter from Onr Fit*
rldn C'orrenpondeut.
Neal Landing, Fla., Ool. 17th, 1874.
Dear Enquirer:—We lert ColumbuR on
I tbo 8th—tho day after the glorions victo
ry in onr doar old State over the Radicals
—and songbt yonr valuable paper at all
poiutH to learn farther news of the resnlt
of tho election. We find the Enquirer
generally read throughout the flection wo
have been over, and deservedly popular.
Our firHt stopping place was Scale. Wo
found tho peoplo in convention, thorough
ly aroused, and determined to win in the
coming contest. As we were fresh from
our tlold of victory, wo bade them God
speed in the gool work, and went our
p way.
As wo are traveling by private convey
ance wo have plonty of time to look
around and chat with the farmers as wo
i go along. We find them busy, and hope
ful that a better tiiuo is coming ; that the
i black cloi^d that has so long overshadowod
tho Stnto of Alabama will soon be rolled
away; the beacon lights of Democracy
lmru bright on every hill, and the watch
word is victory.
Wo stopped at Gleunvillo, Enfanln, Ab
beville, Columbia, Gordon, Greonwood,
Marianna, Port Jackson, llay wood’s Land
ing, and havo just arrived at this place,
now of historical importance on acconnt
of tho grand expedition of the renowned
Col. Ben D. Lay. I mention tho name
with all reveronpe, my band upon my
heart and the nocessary bow. (I tru«t
those remarks will not bo considered per
sonal by the Colonel, ns I am not of n
sanguinary turn of mind).
Wo havo traveled nearly 300 miles, and
through somo of tho most beautiful and
fortilo country tho sun ever shown upon.
I Florida is truly tho “iand of flowers,” al
though tho “autumn is tinging the wood-
; 7 laud and turning tho loaves to gold,” tho
lap of mother earth is filled with beauti
ful bouquets of tho rurost wild flowers,
seemingly prepared by adept hands and
arranged with artistic taste. Tho majostio
water oak, with pendant arms, seems de
sirous of embracing tho fair dame and
robbing her of somo of her posies. Na-
tnro, with lavish hand, has blessed this
portion of Florida, and a bountiful crop
rewards tho husbandman. Wo find the
farmers and merchants looking to Colum
bus as their best market, and, although
rnaoy inducements arc hold out by other
markets, they prefer doing their business
with tho Queen of tho Chattahoochee. To
onr city this section presents a good field
for business, and onr merchants seem, at
1 »nt, duly appreciative of tho importauee
of cultivating it. Strong efforts have
boon made this season by both onr factors
and grocers to control this trade by offer
ing special inducements, and but for tho
low waters their efforts might have boon
crowned with signal success. Hundreds
of bales of cotton line the river’s bank
from Bainbridgo to Eufaula, and ready
for shipment to our city, but tho very low
condition of the river is sadly inconven
iencing both merchants and planters; and
as Savannah has for so long claimed and
controlled tho cotton of this section until
roceutly, sho is now again using her every
endeavor to restore her lost sheep to what
she deems its natural fold, and nuless tho
gracious heavens send us immediate and
copious showers, it is to be feared our
loss will bo Savannah’s gun, and hun
dreds of bales of cotton intended for us
will of necessity find their way to Savan
nah and Eufaula.
Do urge upon our city fathers the im
portance of availing themselvos of the
opportunity now offered for the removal
of the obstructions from tho river, so
that next season will find us in condition
to compete favorably with, other points.
Give us rapid and reliable river transpor
tation, and yon will find the trade of this
section worth more to Columbus than
any she can possibly control.
We would say more upon this subject,
and give a more lengthy- account of our
trip, but fear to tax your valuable space
to too great nu extent. Will say, howevor,
the extention of our business interost
prompted our visit through the section wo
passed.
Would like to give you a description of
our steeds, Noah nn.l Moses; also, the
natural bridge over tho Chipola river, tho
exciting fishing expedition, tho many
clever people wo met, and a per
sonal description of Judge Robinson as
wo saw him—a man for his singular
beauty surpassing tho children of mon.
His bland audio as ho joined in tho holy
bonds a pair of gushing representatives
of tho backwoods, was only surpassed by
the dignity with which ho administered
justice to an erring civil righter who had
misappropriated a pair of shoos. Tho
Judge is tho proprietor of the hotel at
this placo. He is a generous host, whose
profits are small but fun excessive. Wo
dropped u tear at leaving, as we bid adion
to Noah and Moses, and commenced onr
journey with two of Balaam’s steed’s lin
eal descendantb — somewhat improved
upon.
Wishing our journey at an end, and
onco more in old Columbus, wo bid you
good night. Enterprise.
Uncle Stun Uoockoiey.
Thin well known gentleman has re
turned from his summer tour. The Doyle-
ston Democrat speaks of his visit and its
termination as follows:
Many there are among our readers who
know and love to welcome to this coun
ty, in his annual visits, Uucle Sammy
Kookogy, one of the earliest, and oldest
Keillors of Columbus, Georgia, but for
merly a resident of this •ection being
a native of Lehigh county. Unclo Sam
my paid us his usual visit this summer,
but was compelled to leave us sooner
than ho anticipated in consequence of tho
death of his son-in-law, Cuptain Hill, by
which sad circumstance the last fond tie
that bound him to this earth is severed.
Judging from the obituary, which we find
in tho Columbus Enquirer, of October
(Ith, Cap'ain Hill was a very popular and
influential citizen, and in everyway wor
thy of being the son-in-law of such a gen
tleman us Uncle Sammy.
—In LaFayette county, Mississippi, the
Grangers are raising stock by subscrip
tion for the erection of a cotton factory
at Oxford. The capital stock is $50,000
ou shares of $*J5 each. The greater por
tion of this has already been subscribed.
—An ingenious Frenchman in tho Bal
timore jail has invented an improvement
for sewing tho heels ou shoos, for which
ho has been offered $5,000.
