Tho eclipse of the Moon on Saturday night came off promptly at the time set, with an accuracy that vindicated the char acter of the almanacs for truth in one cal culation at least. It was quite an inter esting sight, and being total and at a time a hen the Moon was near the meridian, it presented rare opportunities for obaerva- tion. The silver brightness of tho noc turnal luminary turned to a dull coppery hue as the earth’s shadow gradually passed over it, and when finally the whole disc was covered, it resembled in tho sur rounding gloom a small round cloud of reddish tinge, such as we sometimes see shortly after sunset. Thin vapory clouds, swiftly moving, passed over during every stage of the eclipse, modifying the light of tho eclipsed portion at times so as to make the light appear flickering. About the time of the totality of the eclipse the clouds became so dense os to perfect the obscurity. At no time was any part of the moon’s disc totally obscured, except by clouds. The dimensions and rotundity o! the orb could be distinctly traced iu tho reddish light of tho shaded satellite. Astrono mers tell us that this light was imparted to it by the earth, the moon having no light of its own. Now we are not ashamed to confess that we do not exactly understand this. Tho threo bodies, sun, earth and moon, must have been exnctly in a line ; therefore tho dark side of the earth, or that turned diroctly front the sun, must have been presented to the moon. It is reasonable to suppose that tho earth may have a little light of its own, caused by its warmth in an expanse of extreme cold; but it does not seem reasonable that the little light thus pos sessed (and of w'hose faintness we can form an idea by Boeing how littlo it enlightens terrestrial objects when not aided by tho sun or moon) could illumino tho tuoon and then be reflected back to us with the distinctness apparent during a total eclipse. But it is said that Qstrou- omors sometimes jump to conclusions to umke facts thus ossuuiod consist with or support their theories. Mine Kentucky Horses.
