contest on Ritualism came to a close in
the Episcopal Convention. The largo ma
jority given in fuvor of tho new canon

arguments during the debate, but by tho
explanation of tho committee. The
spokesman stated that the canon, while
presenting a more opinion that certain
ritualistic acts and practices wero of
doubtful doctrine, by no means settled
tho question or forbade acts, but sim
ply paved the way for an investigation
and trial, when they take place. The real
battle over Ritualism is to befeugnt when
these casos come up for trial. The Ritual
question is thus postponed.

Harper's for November has a clevor nr-
3lo on the Bahamas, which says: “In
all probability it was not Gat Island which
Columbus named San Salvador, lint Wat-
ling’s Island—a smaller Isle n little more
to the southward and eastward. The
faois in tho case aro these; Contrary,
probably, to the goncral opinion, it lias
never been definitely known which w
the island entitled to tho honor; but
about fifty years ago, when historians
were busy with the history of ColuiubuK,
they undertook to Rettle the question by
comparing liis journal with iho imperfect
charts of tbo Bahamas then existing. Nn-
varette fixed on Turk’s Island, which later
investigation has proved to bo erroneous,
whilo Irving, supported by tho strong au
thority of Humboldt, arRtied for Gat. Is
land ; and since then this has been gen
erally accepted as Sail Salvador, aud it is
so designated on our charts to this day.
But the English reversed their opiniou
some time ago, and transferred the name
of San Salvador to Watling’s Island, aud
it will bo ro found on their latest charts.
The reason for this clmngo seems conolu
sive. Lieutenant Beecher, of the Euglish
navy, proves conclusively that Gat Island
cannot be San Salvador, and that Wat
ling’s Island answers the conditions re
quired hotter than any other island lying
in tho track of Golumbus. His two strong
est reasons against Gat Island arc that Co
lumbus states that ho rowed the northern
end in ono day. Tlio sizo of Gat Island
makes this physically impossible there,
while it is quite feasible at tho other is
land. lie uiso speaks of a large lake in
the interior. There is no such water on
Cat Island, whilo such a lake does exint
on Watling’s Island.”
