THE JERSEY CITY ItErUCAttMi
HAMILTON GROWS TIRED OP EXILE AND SUR
RENDERS HIMSELF-—HISTORY OF
ms wanderings. ' ' *
Groat oxciteuiont prevailed in Jersey
City on Friday morning in eonseqnenee
of the announcement that Alexander D.
Hamilton, the defaulting City Treaanrer
of Jersey City, had returned and surren
dered himself to the authorities. lie-
twoen 11 and 12 o'clock on Tbntsday
night ho drove into Jersey City from New
York, and searched Jersey City for Chief
of Police Champney for tho purpose of
delivering himself up, but could not suc
ceed in finding that official. Ho then
went to tho residence of Police inspeotor
Benjamin Murphy, who, to his surprise,
was confronted with themau whom he had
hunted for several weeks in the Southern
section of the country and in Mexico.
Hamilton and Inspector Murphy theri
drove to tho residouco of Chief Champ-
ney, and tho throe proceeded to the First
Precinct Police Station, where Hamilton
was provided with quarters for the night.
In the uiornmg ho was visited by several
of his friends, some members of his fam
ily and his bondsmen. He delivered nf>
to tho police twenty-six of the fifty-ono
$1,000 bonds which ho had stolen.
At noon he woh taken to tho Court of
Sessions, whore ho was arrainged before
Judge IlofTtnan ou an indictment charg
ing him with ombezzleineut. The bilk
charges tho embezzlement of $r»l,OO0 in
bonds and $10,000 in cash. Hon. Chas.
H. Winttold, counsel for tho aconped, en
tered a plea of not guilty, reserving tho
right, in case tho indictmont should on
examination provo defective, to withdraw
the plea. Judge Huffman fixed tho bail
at $25,000, and tho prisoner offered Mrs.
Clews, his mother-in-law, as surety. Tho
lady owns only a lifo estate in some prop
orty on Mercer street, valued acoordiug
to her estimate, at $:10,0(H), and tho Court
refnsod to accept her as surety. Hamil
ton was thereupon remanded to jail,
whero ho is confined in coll No. 111.
Tho story of Hamiltonwanderings
appoars like* a romance. He says he went
to St. Louis, and thonco to Galveston,
Texas. He then sailed for Corpus Christi,
and started out to drive across tho coun
try, when ho was overtaken by Chief of
Polico Parker, of that place. The Chief
took him to a ranohe near, tho town, and
charging him with being the defaulting
Treasurer of Jcrsoy City, offered to re
lease him on payuiont of $3,000. Ham
ilton paid tho money and started off
again. Ho h ul not gouo far before Par
ker, with two or three companions, again
overtook Inn. Hamilton diow his pistol,,
determined to fight* but his guide advised
him not to. Ho then dropped the valiso
containing his money uud bonds and oon-
coaled himself. The valiso was picked up
by his pursuers, who koou hecauio involv
ed in a quarrel over the division of the
spoils. Hamilton thou stepped in, and
Parker asked him to divide the property.
Tho defaulting Treasurer thou divided
$17,000 among Parker and his gang, aud
they departed. Hamilton and his guide
then captured a eonplo of liorsos on tho
prairies and camped ou the House river,
Tho former awoke one morning and dis
covered his guide leaning over him with a
drawn dagger. Hamilton drow his pistol
and was about to shoot, when another
Mexican interfered. When tho party had
reached Mntnmoras the defaulter sent for
Cort uas and made n bargoin with himlfor
protection, the nature of which, however,
ho refuses to divulgo. IIo remained' in
Cortinas’ house for several woeks, during
which time Inspector Morphy visited tho
Goveruur iu search of the prisoner; and
while the Inspector uud Cortinas talked
in ono room, Hamilton lay in ^ tho next.
Hamilton finally escaped from CorlUrns,
ami travelled through the country, paVing
his way part of tho time, and working
when he had no money. Ho flnatlyibe-
oame tired of exile and surrendered liini
sei f.
From tho San Francisco Era, !
Kpoiliiitf » I'ouirur'M Appetite.
An Eastern tourist read to his compan
ion the following newspaper paragraph:
“Tho cougars are ‘killing a grout i^aiiy
sheep in Washington Territory.” .
“In Now York,” said ho, “they protect
their tihoop from those insects by rubbing
tar o:i their noses; it koeps the cougars
from going into thoir nostrils.”
A Sttcreiuoiito man, who was down tyoro
attend mg tho pioneers’ celebration, lizard
what ho said aud reinurked :
“One of them once attacked the, and f *
am of tho opiuiou that tar on my nose
would not have been of lunch benefit to
mo.”
“I was not aware they trouhlod m+n.”
“They have got to be pretty hungry bo-
fore they will do so.”
The pioneer then informed the toi rist
that he was laboring under a mistake, and
told him that a cougar was a ferocious an
imal, not a shoep insect.
lie complied with tho roquest to rcanto
tho particulars of his encounter with ono
of them, and commenced by saying : |
1 suppose it was the spirit of adventure
that brought luo bore twenty-five years
ago, that prevented me from remaining
in Sail Francisco, where I could l>avo
amassed u fortune, and nmdo me j tho
“Wandering Jew” of tho many and wide
ly spread mining regious. I was among
tho first that went to the newly discovered
diggings on the head waters of the
Missouri river. My partners and mvac-lf
had discovered a quartz ledge and Woro
sinking on it in hopes of finding the pay
master. It was situated near tho summit
of tho Rocky mountains. Tho rood lead
ing to it was unfrequented, aud alt tho
wild animals to bo found in that region
were our neighbors.
Ono day, when returning from a neigh-
boring claim, whero I had been trt g<jt n
drill sharpened, I stopped to rost under
the shade of n largo pine tree. I had
placed one end of the drill on tbp ground,
and was iu the act qf hitting down, when
I was startled by a strange uoiso over* my
head. I looked up and saw a cougar just
j M the act of pouncing down on mo. His
huge mouth was open uud his eyes shone
like fire-balls,
Mon who lead lives fraught with dan
ger, iu moments of great peril tfiink
rapidly. Tho thought Hashed to mo that
I must catch tho cougar on my drill or bo
his breakfast. I dropped on my kneos
and aimed the drill at the pluco whore I
thought his breast would come.
When I recovered enough from tho
shock to realize my condition, I found my-,
self on my back with tho carcass of the
monster on top of me. For some time I
thought my arms were broken; t on finding
they ’were not, I managed to Voll him off.
I next thought wiy legs wofo^broken; they
were numb and reinafned that way a long
time. No one part of mo was Injured
more than tho others, but all pa*tA wore
nearly murdered. Instead of penetrating
his breast, the point of tho drill had en
tered his mouth, passed down his throat,
and came out near his backbone. It was
along time before I fully recovered. Tho
drill had only partly broken his full, and
tho monster had nearly crushed me to
death, but I had tlm satisfaction of know
ing that I out-generated him, and spoiled
his nppetito for miners.
—The woman suffrage advocates in Cal
ifornia have succeeded in obtaining tho
passage of acts allowing a married woman
to make a contract for her own ostate,
making women eligible for appoint
ments under tho school law for which
they are not disqualified by tho constitu
tion. and making it compulsory on tfchool
boards to pay female teachers equal sala
ries with mule teachers for similar work.
These measure.*, they now say, fire only
the forerunners uf tho real question.
