DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 31, 1874. DOMEATIC.^ —An exchange says:* “Your old black Bilks can be made like new by following these directions: First fnb off all dust with a woolen |h\g. Then mix equal quantities of (fanogar and strong tea, with which wash the silk by thoroughly rubbing with a flannel rng. Fold well, let it remain a while, then iron on the wrong side with a hot iron.” Buicf Facts.—The fumes of a brim stone match will remove berry stains from n book or paper or engraving. If a door doos not uhnt without a “slam,” put a drop of sweet oil on the catch, or on the hinge if it creaks. Soap will do, but not so well. If there is rust on your flat iron, or other roughness, put some fine salt on a ard, rub it rapidly while warm until it bves smoothly. If yau wish to make a nail drive easily, and last long without rusting, dip it in melted grease first. This is excellent for fencing and other exposed work. Hanging a broom in the cellar-way keeps it from becoming stiff and hard, Replacing furniture as we sweep saves much disorder and confusion. Small Sponge Cake.—Boat well to gether two egg-i, and then stir in a tea cupful of powdered white sugar, and beat five minutes; add slowly a teacupfnl of flour, beating all the while ; grate half a lemon into it, and bake ity scalloped Jtins. Fried Potatoes.—Pare and slice very thin; put them into cold water five min utes. Have ready a frying pau of boiling lard. Dry tho potatoes with a cloth ; fry them a pale brown; drain in a colandor; sprinkle on a littlo tine salt, and serve at once. Koep tho lard boiling and fry but a few at a time. Siiin of Bkkf Soup.—Have the shin i well oraokod up; put it to boil in flvo I six quarts of water; boil it five or i f hours; skiui it very often. Cut up, very flue, half a white cabbage; ohop two tur nips and three onions; put them all int« tho soup with pepper and salt, and boil it f two hours; take the bono and gristle out I before serving. If you have some raised Idough make np a dozen balls, the size of La nutmeg, drop them into tho soup and Vet them boil half au hour. Spiced Veal.—Chop 8 pounds of voal pteuk and one thick slico of salt pork as |no ns sausage meat; add to it 8 Boston Vickers rolled fiuo, $ teacup of tomato jatsnp, 11 well-beaten eggs, 1$ teaspoon- Inls salt, 1 teaspoonful peppor, and one v gratcul lemon. Mould it in the form of a loaf of bread, in a small dripping-pan; cover with 1 rolled cracker and baste with A teacupful of hot water and 2 tsblespoon- fnls of butter. Bake throe hours, basting Jfery often. This is au elegant dish for Sp Rice Tuddixo.—One quart of new milk, HE one cupful of seeded raisins, two-thirds of A cupful of rieo; koep it hot in a sauce pan on tho back part of the stovo for two (ours, or until the rice is soft enough. Then add one quart of milk, ono cupful ,«of sugar, and, when cool enough, two fleggs (tho yolks and whites beaten sopa- L rately until they are both frothy), a piooa butter tho size of a walnut, and a very little suit. Mix carefully, so as not to |Tbreak the rice, and bake about half or ! three-quarters of an hone. How to Keep and Cook Mackerel.— Tlio following suggestions with regard to keeping and preparing pickled maokert-1 And other salt fish are condonsed from an Article on the subject by Mr. Dane of Newbnryport, Massachusetts, gho has more than a merely local reputa tion as a packer of and as an “expert’ Ion all matters thereto pertaining: To f keep nice and prevent mating, be sure [ that they are kept under the pickle. If [ tho pioklo should get below the fish, fill l tip with more, made by putting saU in i cold water. The cellar, or some placo in L which you havo no fire and an even tern- I perature, is tho best place to keep all kinds of picklod fish. For boiling, soak twenty four hours; for broiling or for baking, sotk forty-eight hours. In the latter ease cream or milk can bo used for cooking them in. Void the unpleasant rising up in the rorit aftor eating, which mauy persous xpevienco, skin tho mackerel beforo L oking, and a white pulpy substance o found, which adheres to the skin, and Inch causes this strong taste.—Journal u Chemistry. Soke Thkoat—Tight Collars.—An minent physician who devotes his whole ttontion to diseases of the throat and Jungs told us tbo other day that about three-fourths of all throat diseases would got well by wearing very loose collars and no nooktios. He said that often singers would come to him for throat disease and lojis of voice, and ho would tear open tlieir cravats and cure them with no other treatmeut whatever. The pressure of the collar on the arteries of the neck is very bad for tho health, said he. Ho also added: If you have a disease of the throat, let naturo do tho curing and the physioiuu just as littlo as possible. Ruudek Cement.—There aro several kinds of India rubber cement. The best kuown is ‘'marine glue.” A cheaper ce- mout, and one that is highly recommen ded, is made by cutting a quantity of pure India rubbor, in its natural state, in to small pieces, putting them in a wide- - mouthed bottle, and filling it about hulf Vfull of the purest benzine; the rubber I will swell up almost immediately, and if | well sliakon will in a few days nssnnio the f consistency of honey. If the rubber does r not dissolve, add more benzine. If,when dissolved, the cement is too thin, add more gum. A pioco of rubber one inch in diameter, will make a pint of cement. This dries in a few minutes, and is very useful in uniting pieces of leather, as it is both olostic and durable. THOMAS & PRESCOTT A RE NOW RECEIVING THEIR NEW J\.
