Tho latest charge against him was stealing cotton from Col. Wm. McDoiignlO, of Russell county, Ala. The thief was lukon before Justice Shivers, and in default of u #150 bond, was committed to juil. On Wednesday night otio or uioro thieves, supposed to bo uegroos, stole 500 pounds of seed cotton from an old freed- man named Hawuoo, living on u part of Col. McDouguld's laud. They had brought cotton in the city nnd sold it without any intimntion of settling nuy rent. Posses sory warrants woro taken out, bnt tho ne groes would not bo served, uud defied tho Sheriff, and threatened to kill any ouo who leavored to nrrost them. To ascertain whether a propritor has any rights, and not wishing to embroil the w’hites and ne groes in nny difficulty, Mr. Jones Appealed to tho United Htates authorities, and n Deputy Marshal was put nt hiH service, who, with assistance, arrested three of tho ringleaders, and they woro brought Inst ovoning to Columbus for safo keep ing.
