Montgomery and Columbus.
Tho Montgomery papers are again
chirping that old, played-out song nbout
Montgomery being a better market than
Columbus by ^0 to jjo per pound. Now,
that’s pure stuff, ns all shippers know.
Columbus quotes what cotton will
bring in greenbacks, and not like Mont
gomery, in goods at 150 per cent, advance
and Alabama Statu certificate, 80 pur
cent, below par, nnd which can bo used
only for tho payment of taxes. You can
make a very high quotation when yon pay
for half the cotton in goods, as all in this
cuiiutry knows Alabama does. Quota
what tho farmer gets in money, and stop
that old balderdash that belongs to the
little country towns. A shipper would ho
a fool to stay in Montgomery if ho could
buy cotton cheaper in Columbus—that's
one thing certain. So quit that foolish
boast—for it's absurd. Columbus, with
tho exception of one yeur has every sea
son since tho war, warehoused more cot
ton than Montgomery.

The Month of November.
It commences to-day. It derives its
name from tho Latin Novem, min. It
was the ninth month of the old Roman
year, aud was made the eleventh in tho
Gregorian calendar. It was one of the
ten months of the year of Romulus, and
consisted originally of thirty days, which
number was afterwards changed to twen-
ty-uiie, probably by tho Decemvers.
Julius Ctosar gave it thirty-one, but Au
gustus restored it to its original number.
By tho heathen Saxbus it was called Blot-
monatli, because in this month they sacri
ficed those they slew to the Gods. It
corresponds to parte of Marheshran and

Grkknhborougii, August 2(5th, 1848.
Dear Sir—You will recollect what
passed nt the time I met you at tho bar

In tho remarks yon made it never struck

The previous relation that hud existed
betweou us, tho manner in which you
mot me, and tho utter improbability of
tho act left no doubt on my mind that
you made tlio remarks iu a jocular way.
I have since been informed that you were
iu earnest, and really intended to slap my
money has been ‘ jaws. Lot mo know tho truth in relation
to the matter. liespoctfully,
Francis II. Cone.
