DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1874.
WUEAT.
Cuss eta, Ala., October 30, 1874.
Editor Enquirer-Sun—I desire to offer
some thoughts to the readers of your
most excellent paper, particularly your
agricultural readers, upon the Bread
Question ; for when Alabama has follow
ed iu the wake of Georgia, and redoems
herself, as she will do on Tuesday next, in
spite of handcuffs and courts of convic
tion from misrule and torrorisin, the
people will still need bread.
And to come to the point, I want to
ask them if they have any idea of the
amount of money sent out of this im
poverished section of country that makes
Columbus a trading poiut, for tha one
arliclo of Flour. I have no statistics
upon the subject, but I dare say that not
less than two hundred thousand dollars is
annually expended by your merchants,
and sout out of the country for something
to be consumed by their customers, every
dollar of which could be kept at home, if
our farmers would but pursue a proper
policy. And yet we complain of hard
times.
This money could be retained in all
the counties north of Columbus, aDd in
inuny localities south, as far as Lumpkin,
Stewart county, without reducing the cot
ton crop a single bale. This I will pro-
eeed to show in this article.
Now I am aware that many of you are
ready to meet me with.that old argument,
“cheaper to make cotton and buy it, than
run the risk of rust, Ac.” lint lot us
IB make an experiment:
Take 1 bushel of good sood whe.it,
worth bb
Take 30 bushels of good seed cotton
worth ^ r »°
Take 1 barrel of lime, worth 1 30
Take i bushel snlt, worth
Take I bushel land plaster, worth..
Take ] pound saltpetre, worth lb
$8 75
Dissolve tho salt in water, and
slack the lime, then roll the cot
ton seed iu tho lime. Now soak
your wheat in tho Baltpetre, dissolv
tul in water, aud roll it iu the land plas
ter. Tnou tuko an ordinary scooter plow,
if you wish to sow cottou land, which 1
prefer, and open your cottou rows. How
about ten bushels of cotton seed, and
drill, by hand, one-third of a bushel of
whont per aero. Throw two light furrows
back on this, and plow the row out as if
you wore cultivating. Now I imagine
you are rea.ly to say this is too much
trouble. I have not tho time, Ac. To
this,I would answer, that nothing troubles
mo so much as to owe a debt and not
have tho money to pay it; and I alway;
have more timo to send a few more
busliols of wheat to mill, than I havo to
sou l my wagon to town for a barrel of
. flour, and go with it) to soe if the mor
chant will trust mo, t wheu I have not
^ paid hi in for last year.
' My farming friends, let me beg of you
to try at least one bushel of wheat on
57 three acres of laud, as I have directed
I and as much more as your family re
I quires or the means at your command will
|. justify, and yon will make ten bushels of
P good wheat to the acre, or thirty bushels
£ on three acros, worth at least $00 to any
^farmer who bus been buying flour. I re
gard this as a sure crop two years ont of
* throe, on almost any lands with a clay
foundation, where the soil has not beo.i
all washed away. Good wheat land will
Blake more.
®|Now let us look at tho figures again
Atm have expended $8 75 for sood and
I nure, aud $10 for labor iu seeding,
ping aud threshing, which, deducted
$00, leaves $11 25 clear profits. If
in had planted this land in cotton, with
uni cultivation porhaps you would havo
iado a bale of cotton worth now about
Thirty dollars, cost of labor, dc
quoted from this, loaves thirty-five dollars
profit.
Rue I am not doue. Suppose you take
six acres of luud, sow half iu wheat and
plant tho other iu cotton. Then next
ear rotate. Keop all stock off your
heat land, and in Heptomber turn
aider the grass and weeds with
ood two-horse plow, followed by a sub
soil. This will cost for labor loss than $;
per acre. Now nse $(» in com'l fertilizers
—better make them at home, though—
* ^|plaut improved cotton seed of your own
•election, if possible—and you will make
•u the throe aeros tico bait* of cotton, or
much ou half tho land as yon did on
i whole, with a very different result to
our pocket, w hich I will show.
Six acres of laud in cotton would make
■two bales, worth in market $130. Deduct
V* 10 per acre for cultivation, and you havo
profits.
Three acres, rotated after small grain,
ibsoiled and fertilized, would give two
iftlosof cottou, worth $180. Deduct $0
for subsoiliug and turning, in tho fall of
io year, before tho grass has died, and
18 for fertilizers, to which add $30 for
Itivation, and you have $73 profits.
Three ucrea in wheat, thirty bushels—
>rth $<»0—deduct $18.75 aud you have
$41.75, to which add $78 ; yon have
$111 75 form tho six acres of laud iu
t cotton and wheat, instead of $70 from
■ix acres in cotton aloue.
With this system of rotation, the lands
ill improve, nud continue to give better
results than I havo clairno 1 in this osti-
ato, while all cotton is death to the laud,
os well as death to the people. It uiay
be said this is theory, aud can not bo
practiced. I deny it, aud claim that
my figures arc under, rather than over
the ma.lt. I once thought it best to make
cotton, to buy corn, wheat and bacon,
but I found I was getting behind and
changed my programme. I have a family
of nine persons—have not bought a pound
of bacon for my white fuwily since tho
war, nor a bushel of corn thin year, nor
will have to next. I havo wheat enough
to do me until harvest, and sow one hun
dred acres for auother crop. In
[fact, I have a littlo of everything
[that can be grown in this sec-
[lion for sale, from a colt or milch
cow to a pock of ground peas, and make
as much cotton to the mule as any man
iu the county who runs a force of more
Ihau twenty-five plows.
[ I havo written this article to ask ray
| fanning friends to reflect. If you are
Uloing well, making your farms pay you, I
‘ ave bo advice for you. I know you are
pursuing a proper oourse. But if you are
getting behind, curtail your operations
so as to reduce expenses—particularly
your labor. Run fewer plows, diversify
your crops, and if you cannot raise wheat
•n your lauds because you live too far
South, plant nu acre or too in sugar cane,
make your syrup and a few extra barrels
to exchange for flour will keep your name
off the merchant’s hooks and leave money
in your pocket to pay your ilebls. Tho
next thirty days though is tho time for
sowing wheat, and nothing should tempt
you to neglect it. If you have been read
ing recollections of thirty years ago now
being published iu this paper, you will
see that our fathers grew cotton for four
to six cents per pound und made money.
We got twelve to fifteen, and yet wo are
about to perish. They diversified and
economized, aud we should profit by their
example. This article is growiug too
leugthy, and I must close. If any practi
cal farmer is disposed to question any
thing that I have written, I would bo glad
to hear from him. The Esquikku is a
good medium for interchange of ideas,
aud wo all should read it and induce our
neighbors to take it and pay for it, and
we have auytliiug to buy, trade with
the houses who advertise iu our paper.
As a general thing men who advertise are
more anxious for trade, aud will give bet-
tor bargains. Wo would thus encourage
merchants to advertise, aud sustuiu tho
paper without any cost to us.
