DAILY ENQUIRER-SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1874. The Political Revolution SPEECH OF SENATOR THURMAN. Washington, November 4.—The Dem ocrats of this city serenaded Senator Thur man, of Ohio, at his residence nere. A largo crowd was present. In responeo Senator Thurman returned his thanks for the opportunity afforded him to partici pate in their rejoicing, and said: “When I think of it, is it not a dread ful thing and calculated to bring terror to even- loyal bo«om to see you with drum and life, and trumpet and cimballs, and with mighty shouts that rend the air cele brating the conquest of Massachusetts by the terrible Kn-klux ? [Laughter.] “Was it not enough that those awful and godless fellows had intimidated the peaceable, amiable and houest carpet baggers and scallawags and their followers down South—obtained the mastery over that fair portion of the republic ? Was it at all necessary that they should invado the North, and by intimidatiog Republi cans carry Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey, and to cap the climax, overrun New York and put Massachusetts in their breeches pock et? [Applause.] “Politicians and editors are scratching their heads to find out the cause of the victories, when every one who has care fully read and inwardly digested the his* tory of Southern outrages, the lunnifes- toes of Mr. Attorney General Williams, the proceedings of the Chattanooga Con vention, the affidavits of Major Merrill uud the telegrams of Marshal Packard, kuows full well that there is but one cause, and that is the intimidations of the devil- inspired party (hs that vouerable Chris tian statesman, Gerritt Smith, calls the Democracy,) have so frightened the peace loving Radicals from Passamaquoddy Ray to the ltio Gruude, that many of them, from sheer torror, have voted the Demo cratic ticket, and yet more of them at - stained from voting at nil. [Renewed laughter. J And ns if chore is nothing that these devil-iuspircd men will not duro to perpetrate, they have without fear or trembling laid their profane hands upon the head of the brave, patriotic Butler and shrieked into his ear the disloyal cry, ‘Benjamin, depart 1 ’ [Laughter and ap plause.] f “Now, my friends, I pray you don t lliiuk mo frivolous becauso I talk this way. Year nfter yoar our victories in the South have been falsely attributed to in timidatioii, and member after member of Congress duly elocted has lost his scat upon this falao charge. At every elec tion for years Southern outragos has been the battle cry of Radical politicians in tho North, and the justification for Iswh that disgrace civilization and usurpations that lay the axe at tho foot of Republican in stitutions. But what cun the luuuufuctu rors of fal-e pretences say now when our triumphs at the North aro oven more sig nal than those at tho South—when oven Massachusetts, persistent, unvarying, hab it-bound Massachusetts, sets tho seal of her condemnation upon Radical misrule, and for the first time in nearly half a cen tury souts an honest Democrat in the Governor’s chair ; and in this connection was it not right, gentlemen, that I should refer to Benjamin F. Butler, who, in ac cepting his lost nomination gave as his chief reason for wishing to roinnin in Congress, his will and ability to still fur ther bleed uud suppress the South. “But tho time hud passod by when this persecuting spirit found a ready response in tho hearts of his constituents. Tho time had passed when violations of the Constitution, contempt for justice, disre gard of Found policy, and neglect of the interests of tho people, could all be over looked under tho iutluenco of passion and prejudice; and hence the result. You see, he used the black Hag of persecution, and under that hateful bunuer sought to maintain his place in the Congress. Tho people raised the white fiag of defeat, but of peace, uud Raid to the would-be persecutor, ‘Stay, thou, at homo.’ If you usk me, fellow-citizens, what are the causos of our victoiies, I answor, discontent with Radical rule. If you ask mo for tho roa sons of this discontent, I answer, that our Radical rulers have, in the last nine years, persistently set at naught every instinct j of feeling, habit and teaching of tho American people. Americans are a cou- j stitution-loving people; but no regard has [ boeu paid to tho constitution by our ru lors. Americans are a liberty-loving peo- | pie; but liberty has boon remorselessly trampled under foot. Americans are a hoine-rulo-loving people; but home-rule has been treated with scorn and contempt, and Congress assumes and exercises tho powers of an omnipotent parliament, Americans are nn honosty-loving people but credit mobiliers. Sauburn contracts, custom bouse frauds, and Washington rings have tuado corruption almost a syn onym of government. “The financial embarrassments of the country, then, could not be attributed to the Democratic party, as that party had had no power in this land for the past twelve years. The Republican party had a triumphant majority in both houses of Congress and absoluto control of tho finances of the country.” In roply to a cry of “How about an in dependent press ?” he said : “An inde pendent press had accomplished n work during the past year which would re dound to its honor as long as the pross lasts. ” In roply to question, “How abont the third term ?” he said : “My friend in the White House 1ms not given that idea tip, Ho is trying to fight it out on that lino ii it takes a year and a half. If tho Presi dent don’t wuut a third term why don’t ho say so? Ho [Thurman] saw in the uowspnpors a few days ago that General Grant did not consider it consistent with his dignity to make any denial of being a candidate for the third term. That wan a very poor apology. The Republican State Convention of South Carolina had flolomnly nominated him for a third term, and did not that authorize him to speak on tho subject ? or did ho consider that the Radical party of South Carolina was so utterly contemptible that he could not answer it ?” Or Thrilling Interest. I find in tho papers two items which ap pear to mo to possess thrilling interest. One states that “there is an epidemic among the goats of Asia Minor,” and tho other informs us that “Terre del Fuego is for sale." When I reflect upon the almost pathetic interest that is felt in this coun- try in the snnitury condition of the goats of Asia Minor, and of the vast number of Americans who do not sleep at nights be cause of their great and irresistible yeuru- iugs to buy up Terra del Fuego at auction; and when I remember that American newspapers lately havo paid for several co3tly cable dispatches which informed them that Cardinal Antonelli’s goat is bet ter, and that tho Earl of Yarborough was drunker than usual, I feel that if it was’nt for a free and independent press, the peo pie of this country would soon collapse again into darkness and ignorance and hopeless chaos.—Max Adler. —A man who protended to havo seen a ghost was asked what the ghost said to him. “How should I understand,” re plied the nnrrator, “what he said ?
