TBS BWOBN IlRTUHXS OF MKRCQANTS FOR
THU SEASON'S OF 1872-’3 AND 1873-’4 —
LA ROE DECREASE LAST YEAR—PROYKS
TUB PEOPLE UAV £ LIVED CLOSER, AND
FEW ADVANCES HAVE BEEN MADE.
At onr request, Mr. M. M. Moore, Clerk
of Council, one of tho most thorough,
courteous aud competent officers that ever
a city possessed, has kindly prepared for
u* the following tables, which show tho
business of Columbus merchants aud man
ufactories for tho past two seasons from
August 31st to October 31st. The city
requires tho gross sales to be returned
quarterly ou oath in order to be taxed on
them. Wo really think some of tho re
ported sales, merchants would hardly be
willing to go to the public, uuloss they
had au opportunity to increaso the figures.
The total shows a decrease of $081,341
of last year from tho previous season.
Every branch of trade shows a less
amount except manufactured and woolen
goods, which have gained $9,078. Even
fire insurance manifests a heavy decline.
Including insurance and livery H’ulile
receipts, the total busiuess reported is
$4,f»20.(M»G for 1872-3 and $3,812,022 for
I873-’4 ; excess of former $708,041.
There are good reasons for this decline
and every city must' show a corresponding
one whoso returns are reported fairly.
The panic of last fall produced the great
est depression. Tho people have not yet
recovered from it. lUauters wore in debt
for supplies to raise cottou which brought
low prices. The consequence, all com-
tneuced living more economically, obtain
ing ns little advances as possible—houco
business was dull and transactions re
duced. A mure trying year has novel
been known.
Tho farmers now have plenty of coil
and cotton aud the future is promising.
Under tho heading of hardware is in
cluded the sales of the Columbus Iron
Works, which cover about half
amount reported. Including all classes,
tho sales of Columbus manufactories
and mills, reach over one and a half million
dollars annually. Homo mills are not in
cluded in the following returns :

PLAIN TALK FROM THE DAILY NEWS.
An impression having gone abroad that
tho show advertised to exhibit here noxt
Wednesday was controlled by P. T. Bar-
num, of New York,.and J. E. Roberts, tlio
editor of the Daily Nem, of Montgomery,
having so announced it in his local col
umns, Mr. Barnuiu sent a telegram to tho
News office stating: “I have no interest
whatever in any show outside of New
York, nor does any exist like my Hippo-
dromo.”
(Siguod) P. T. Barnum.
Upon tho receipt of which, tho editor
of the News states inj.his columns that
the local roforrod to, claiming P. T. Bar
num as Ihe owner, was furnished him by
W. 0. Crum, tho agent of the company ,
and that Mr. Crum desired particularly to
impress the fact that snid P. T. Barnum
was the owuorof said combination. Tho
show visited Montgomery ou November
Gth, and wo clip the following, which is
a portion only of the criticism in the col
umns of tho Montgomery Daily News of
7th inst.:
“Tho whole performance was short, in-
deod too much ho to give the satisfaction
desired naturally f/y the audience. The
principal scenes of tho llippodrdmo were
of a novel nature, as we have already
stated. But amid nil tho hurly burly of
»s in the arena we looked ill vain
for the menagerie—Wainbold’s great col
lection of wild bensts. We couldn’t find
the great race between elephants—tho
danoing, marching, artillery practice,
jto., the most astonishing performance
jvor given by elephant-*.’ The ‘KWJ of
llio best thoroughbred and blooded horses
m this country’ we did not see. The
•Races a la Persian by dromedaries' were
reserved for a future occasion, no doubt.
‘Stag Hunt’ didn’t couie off with the
Faiglinli hounds. We suppose the stag
hail such a good start thut the hounds
thought it no use to enter. The ‘Mustang
mule aud donkey race’ didn’t come off—
in fact, neither of these animals was to
be seen. The ‘slow race, for fat mou,
250 avoirdudois,’ was not presented.
