Why not form a battalion ? Fereonal. We had the pleasure of a call yesterday from the editor and proprietor of tho Headlight, published in Dadeville, Ala. Hope he will tusko headquarters at the office during his stay in the city. Last week the engine and several cars of the passenger train on the Mobile and Girard Railroad were ditched a few miles this aide of Union Springs, Alabama. It happened during the night. A fireman wav burned, but not very badly. All other persons escaped. Examination showed that obstructions had been placed upon the track for the express purpose of wrecking the train. Cross ties bad been arranged so that the cow-catcher could not lift them, and the engine coming in oontaot would only force them to hold faster and harder. This indicated that the perpetrators of the murderous attempt were guided by some one who had been employed in railroad building. Supicion fell on some negroes who wera aronud the wreck. The railroads officers, having obtained consent of the Mayor, sent Capt. Cash and officer Robert#, of our police force, down the road to work the case np. They did so quietly, and labored so diligently, and with each ingenuity that they have succeeded in baggiug the game they sought. Suspicion pointed strongly to two ne groes, Adam Pitts and John Jones. The latter once worked on the M. A E. Rail road, bnt was discharged, and both knew something about placing obstructions on a track. Adam is a deacon of the colored Baptist Church iu Union Springs. By close watching and listening, one of them was overheard telling how the job had been accomplished and the method of arranging the cross ties. Ho said it had been reported that on the train due that evening was a large number of while people on board, who had ajbrasH band and a cannon to as sist iu a Domocratio jubilee in Union Hpriugs; that there was then enough Dem- crats in the place; and they fixed so as to stop that train and the rejoicing of some of tho white folks. Tho two nogroes had been seen at tho scene of the disaster directly after it happenod. These aud other evidences of guilt hav- ing been acquired and proper authority obtained, the officers proceeded to mftke the arrests. They were aided by Mr. A. J. Pitman, agent of tho Mobile and Gi rard Railroad at Uniou Springs. He and Roberts, on Friday night, took their stand on a corner, and Cash stationed himself at another. At a lato hour the negro, John Jones passod by. Roberts at once arrested him. Before Pittman could also grasp him, tho negro swung Roberts (who is a weakly man) looso to one side and ran. Itoberts shot at him, but tho darkey escaped, aud is still at largo. It was done so quickly that Cash could not get up iu time. Tho three succeeded in capturing Adam Pilts. He is now in the Union Springs jail, having failed to give a bond of one thousand dollars. He wili be tried Fri day. Tho officers deserve much credit for the rnauner in which they worked up this case. They returned to the city Sunday. ELEGANT CUSTOM CLOTHING Stock Prices Removal of Ftlth and Truth from tho Streote. Major Calhoun: As you are well known to be of an obliging disposition, as was recently shown in the “Faitf" lift yon gave the Alabamians, in doing the Eads out of tfceir Big Betts to the tune of five thousand, I want to secure your co-opera tion in a little dirty work at home. Now, Major, don’t be offended. I am going to help you. You poff, and I will blow, and see if we can't raise such a dust as will cause our City Fathers to imitate Old Hickory and have those unsightly deposits of filth and trash, which adorn our streets from Monday morning till Saturday night, removed ; or, if pot, require every one— in the language of an ancient statesman —“to tote his own skillet,” and carry his accumulations to a more retire! But if you should be of a contrary opinion—from your travels in the smaller cities of Philadelphia and New York—then set your organ to grind ing, and see if yon cannot play a moving tune, and you can secure the job.
