Distribution of the Mammoth.
The mammoth extra Ehquokb, issued
last Thursday, will be read by more
people than any similar paper ever got
ten oat in Georgia. This office has already
distributed 10,000 through the mails, be
sides a similar number given away te
merchants sod business men. In order
that the extra may fall into the largest
number of hands, and benefit us at well
as the business public, we hope merchants
will distribute the ones they have on haul
very judiciously. Ask your customers if
they have had a oopy, and if not present
them one. This will insnre a general cir
culation, and prevent more than one paper
getting into the Batne family. Bemem.
her this and thus benefit yourself and the
Enquirer.

—The steamer Wylly left about noon
yesterday, with a fall freight and liat of
passengers for the lower river. The Ju
lia Is dua and will doubtless be at the
wharf this morning.
—The Baltimore Store has the warmest
and best of overcoats and talmas at the
loweat figures.
—There waa a light white frost yester
day morning. The day was bright and
pleasant to 3 p. ui., when the skies were
evercsst with clouds.
—Hofflin, Rich A Co., have one of the
largest stocks of male wearing apparoi in
the country.
—The Columbus manufactories paid
out yesterday $12,000 to operatives as
wages for the past two weeks.
—Florida oranges—the smaller kind are

—If you would be stylish and comforta
ble buy your clothing from the Baltimore

—Ducks are reported rather plentiful
on tha river, and ihe lakes and pondB ad
jacent. Several covies of partridges have
been flashed in Bussell oounty. This is
for hunters.
—According to the law of Georgia,
when a man is garnisheed and he answers
that he owes nothing, he is entitled to
lawyer’s fees. Business men have been
much annoyed by frequent garnishments
and have lost valuable time in attending
and waiting on conrts. One got fifteen
dollars the oilier day by answering—from
a lawyer too;
—The Democrats have won a great vic
tory, but they will wiu a greater by call
ing at the Baltimore Store and payiug for
one of those olegaut suits to be fouud
there.
—Idleness is the nursery of crime.
—Columbus shippers for the week end
ing Friday night, paid out $232,200 for
cotton. Where has the money gone ?
—Gen. E. P. Alexander, President of
the Savannah and Memphis Railroad, was
in the city yesterday. Major H. Wilkins,
of the same road, is in Columbus. Tho
additional twenty miles were examined
by the Commissioners of the State on
Wednesday, who were exceedingly grati
fied. It is expected that the survey will
be re-ootnmenoed next spring to Childers-
barg, on the Selma, Rome and Dalton
road, and on to Coiiutb.
—Oar market is now fairly supplied
with Florida syrup.
—If Bismark had bought his clothes
from the Baltimore Store, he would havo
felt so delightfully as to have released
Van Aroirn loug ago.
—Our policemen should not abase men
they arrest, or insult them; more especi
ally when the arrested parties make no re
sistance. Officers arc not paid to do this.
They mast be courteous. If they make
an arrest they should do it kindly, if pos
sible, and prevent suits against the oity.
Brutal language is not to be allowed, no
matter how poor and defenceless a man
msy be. We advise those to whom such
oonduct is displayed to report the matter
at once to the authorities. We say
this as a caution to those only that the cap
fits.
—If yon would be pleased with your
self and have everybody admire you, yon
have only to buy yonr clothing from the
Baltimore Store.

Major A. li. Calhoun, Proprietor and
Editor of Enquirer:
I notico in to-day's issue of your paper a
notice of ihe “Workingmen’s” meeting of
Thursday evening last. I sec no reason
why it should not have boon reported in
duo oourse of yester morning; but as to
that, it matters uot to me. What I have to
say in the matter is of the reported remarks
about myself. Tho reporter states 1 com
plained of tho public schools. I suppose
he moans of this city. If so, he states
what is false, us I stated uttho commence
ment of my talk that / teas in favor of
public schools, lie states further that I
personally object to tho principal of those
schools. That is also false. As to tho sal
ary paid to any persi>n at the rute
of $1,800 per year, or any othor smu, as
separate from extra compensation for ser
vices reudored as Superintendent to tho
Head Master or Teacher of the Grammar
or High School, or whatever name it may
bo oalled, I did object. And although tho
writer of the notice says, “Wo know the
workingmen do uot eudorse (his, or his
remarks in geueral,” in answer to which
I beg to inform the said writer of what
hundreds of citizons of Columbus do not
oudorso, who are both workingmen, mer
chants and professional men :
They do uot endorse a self-made
board of trustees to disburse publio
mouoy to tho amount paid in this oity.
2. They do not endorse the paymont of
$1,800 to any one as Superintendent of
Publio Schools.
They do not endorse tho filthy
condition in which the Public School for
oolorod children is allowed to be kept.
Boiug of opinion that it is well to teach
cleanliness, carufuluoss, and other proper
methods of conduct to the colored-classes,
as woll as the book knowledge that may
bo atlaiued in such schools by thorn.
The amounts (I was informed by the
city Treasurer) paid last year for Public
School purposes in tho city of Columbus,
was $9,100. Amount received from the
State, $1,020.55— leaving this amount to
be paid from tho city tuxes, $7,479.45.
The wholo amount of tho statement I
made before tho mooting referred to iu
this note is, that out of the abovo there is
tile sum of $1,300 uselessly giveu away
for services not rendered.
Respectfully, John Affleyaud.
A Matter of Gladness•
The reporter who gave an account of
that mootiug Thursday, . was uever
more amused thau when roadiug the card

All are exceeding rojoicod to kuow
that Mr. Appleyard favors our Pub

sonally to Superintendent Dews. What
were all thoso words about bad grammar,
Ac., for ? The reporter is able to answer
only one of tho connuudruius pro
pounded. Tho acconut of the meeting
was not published Thursday hooause no
paper wns published nt thiH office on
Thnuksgiviug Day. With tho oilier
things, tho “ifs,” &c., tho roporter has
nothing to do. He ib ho rejoiced to kuow
that tho schools huve a valuable supporter,
that laughter wells from tho bottom of
his heart. The world will now luovo on
