PLODS—Per bbl—Western choice superfine $0 60; Yesterday morning on the complaint of Albert Griffith, colored, who has charge of the Garrard place in Wynn ton, Gen. P. J. Phillips, J. P., issued a warrant for ths arrest of a negro, who claims to be a preacher, bat goes by a dozen names—Eli Hill among them. He was charged with burglary—robbing the Garrard property. Constable Frank Comer arrested him near Wynn’s Hill. After going a short dis tance, the prisoner demanded to see the warrant. The officer drew ont his book to look for it, when the darkey broke and ran, and refused demands to halt. Co mer fired at him twice, then ran after and caught him, when the fugitive drew a knife and commenced making blows. The constable warded them off, telling the man to surrender that he did not wish to hurt him, but finding his own life in danger, he also commenced kniving the prisoner—cutting him several timeH, and finally forced him to yield. He was brought before Justioe Philips and found to be badly wounded and medical aid was summoned. Colored men say that this negro is not a preaoher but an impostor. There is no doubt but that ha is the same one who stole some hogs from Mr. Geo. Tillingbast. Medical exatnication showed that the negro was shot in the right shoulder and out in three places. He is now in jail. Aleck Bradley is another of his names. A A | Syrup—Florida 06c. •alt—$1 to for Liverpool. JadM U New Adoertieemente. Mailo Books—Oliver Dltson A Oo. A Reported Murder. The Enfaula News that came yesterday appears to be of the improasion that Blakely, of Colnmbua, who stepped off the steamer Julia into the river and was supposed to be drowned some two weeks ago, was “murdered by negroes to secure the watch and money be had on his per son." Neve says be “went to Mr. Alex ander's will for the purpose of drying himaelf, end afterwards wandered back to the river bank, where bis. body was found." As we steted jnst after the occurrence, Mr. Blakely, several days before hie death, deposited bis money with Ml Hpsrks, the olerk of the boat, and did not withdraw it. We know not whether be had a watch. The story of the mur der is hardly probable. As we have pub lished, the body woe buried last week. Calumkue gentleman at Ratlread The following, wbioh we clip from the lloanoke Newt, of Weldon, N. 0., shows that Mr. U. A. Bacon—a native of onr oity, who was onoe connected with the State Road of Georgia, and afterwards with Kentucky roads, and lately held the important station of agent at Golnmbna of the Western Railroad of Alabama—is succeeding admirably as Superintendent of the Petersburg and Weldon Railroad : Under the new Snperintendent the P. ft W. R. R. baa greatly improved in vari ous ways. Major R. A. Bacon has given satisfaction sinco his accession to the supervision of this road, both to the pub lic and stockholders. Jtleer JVeses. A dispatch from Maeon announces that four white prisoners, charged with mur der, eeoeped from the jail in that oity Sunday morning, and had not been re-oap- tured. Change of Church Organist. We regret to learn that Mrs. J. Marion Estes has rosigned the position of organ, ist at the Baptist church, which she has held with so much ability and faithfulness for the past tbirtoen years. It is well known in Colnaibus, but as it may not be elsewhere, that the offleo is accompanied by no salary. Mrs. Estes is wonderfully gifted in music—not only having a rich, dear and sweet voioe of remarkable pow er, bnt performs admirably on various in struments. Her natural advantages have been improved by long study and prao- tieo. Though having charge of a large family, sho has never missed service in the ohuroh cave when prevented by sick ness. Hhe is ono of the most accom plished Christian Indies end finished .of organists. 'I he ehnreh has elected Mrs. Battle, wife of the prinoipal of the Male Depart ment of onr Fnblio Schools, ns her buc- oessor. Hhe teaches mnsio to the girls in (hat institution, and is a musician of rare merit. Churches Sunday. Bervioes were held at all the ohurohes. Pulpits were filled by pastors except at Ht. Luke, where Dr. L. Pierce preached In the morning, and at St. Paul, when Rev. Samuel Anthony officiated in the evening. The weather wee pleasant and congregations good. Rev. Mr. Tigner preached at Browno- villa Methodist Sunday night No service at Ginrd ohnrohea. The French Spy Last trtght. Theatre-goers have been refreshing their memories, end find that Adah Isaacs Menkin, the dashing and onoe world famed beauty, was the only one who had noted the Frenoh Spy in Golnmbos nntil last evening. Her form was perfection. The play abounds in good points and striking tableaux. M’lle Zoe, who per- aonated the “Spy” last evening, is very graceful in her movements end entered folly into the spirit of the pieee. She was frequently applauded during the rendi tion and received several encores. The broad sword exercise, with one, two, four, and again eight opponents, brought down the house. The support was fair. Wo could not admire, however, American slang phrases of the present day intro, duoed by several into the French army of many years ago. Among the aotresaes is Miss Sallie Partington, who was such a favorite in Richmond during the war. The audience was good in point of numbers—included quite a number of beautiful ladies—and judging from the langhter, interest and applause, they en. joyed the performance. The “Rough Diamond,” the afterpiece, was played finely. To-night the company presents Eimi raids. Go and see. fpfree Ore ken. The heavy atorm of Sunday broke down the wirea of both companies in several places in Honth and North Carolina and Tennessee. They were all right last night.
