teen and including Mr. Rioketts, chief

Col. Johnson, of North Carolina, asking

tho Southern Pacific Railroad and the
great water lines, such aid to convey the
right of Government to control the rates
of transportation over suoh lines, and
provided that the Government guarantee
asked shall bo bo guaranteed as to protect
the national treusury from loss.
Four members of tho committee pre
sented u protest against the adoption of
the report and agaiuBt asking the Gov
ernment to aid iu the construction of the
railroad.
Tho report aud protest brought promt
nently before the convention one of the
most important questions connected with
the mission of the association—that of
Government subsidies to railroads and
other lines of transportation.
Pending a motion to substitute the
minority report for that of the majority,
the question of Government subsidies
was discussed at length.
Ou the call of States, the vote seeming
to be largely in favor of tbe motion, Col.
Johnson, by permission of the Conven
tion, withdrew his resolution.

IIMM M. A. HOLLINGSWORTH,
—In alluding to the marriage of Mr.
Lorenzo Day to Miss Martha Weeka, tbe
following epithalamium is sung by a mis
chievous poet:
'ime should not complain;
—Mr. Otwell Livingstone, non of the
lnte Dr. Livingetoue, writes to Tha Lon
don Daily Feies to state that tbe recent
sale of nrtioles belongiug to the Doctor,
which took place in London, wm entirely
unknown to the members of his family.
He oomplains that on the arrival of the
body of bis father at Unyanyeuibe, a com-
siderable amount of his belongings were
appropriated for the use of Lieut. Cam
eron and his oomrades. Among the arti
cled sold in London, Mr. Livingatono
doubts whether anything except the air
cushions were actually with Dr. Living-
wtooe from 1880 to 1873. Mr. Living
stone complains somewhat bitterly of the
course taken by those into whose hands
Dr. Livingitone’s kit fell, and thinks that
had Lieut. Murphy dispensed with abus
ing Busi and Ohnmah, aud thought a lit
tle more m they thought about tbe Doc
tor's things, his family might have been
spared the pain they had just had to sub
mit to.
