Sherman, in oommenting on tha status of the army, is mortified to learn that there are more postmasters ia the United States than soldiers. —Tha new mills of the Rensseller Iron Works, at Troy, N. Montgomery, December 9.—The Legis lature, by a requisite vote, has sgrsed extend the session beyond the constito tional limit of thirty days. W. W. For the Tennessee and the Ohio valley, increasing cloudiness and colder weather, with northerly or westerly winds and sta tionary or rising barometer. For the South Atlantic and Gulf States, dear fair weather, northerly or westerly winds, high barometer, slight changes in tern perature in the southwest, probably fol lowed by a northern on the Texas coast. Transit of Venua—observations Hueeesofal. London, December 9.—Telegrams were received at Greenwich Obssrvatory, this afternoon, from India, announcing that the observations of the transit of Venus had beeu successful. Over one hundred photographs were taken. Ku-KInx Pardoned. Washington, December 9.—The Presi dent has granted pardons, to be issued to-morrow, to John Whisonsnt and Jerome Whisonant, of South Carolina, both eon victed of Ku-Klux offences and sentenced each to five years’ imprisonment at Alba ny, N. Y., and one hundred dollars' fine, They have served two years of thsir term, Enntfaj Opera In Row Tai Nxw York, December 9.—A decision was rendered by Judge Donohue to-day, refusing to make permanent a temporary injunction against the Police Commis sioners to restrain them from interfering with Max Strakosob'a Sunday afternoon performanoes in tha Grand Opera House, -The wife of ex-Judge Pratt, of San Francisco, has applied fur a divoroe from her husband on the ground of desertion, and asks for a division of their common property, whioh is valued at $2,000,000. —P. D. Harris, of the New York Cus tom-house, and W. P. Girard, Purser of the steamship Cresout City, have been held in $5,000 bail for assisting in smug gling 20,000 cigars. —Edward Madden, editor of the San Francisco 1'ribune, was killed Monday by H. Grenovice, a stepson of the editor of the San Joaquin Argus. Au attempt was made to lynch the murderer, but he waa not found, as tha sheriff bad removed the prisoner and concealed him. —Masked men detached the express car and engine from the train on the Kansas Pacific Railway, robbed the safe of Wells, Fargo and Co. of $27,000. The case with ~i5,000 gold dust was oarried off. The robbers were mounted and heavily armed. The Express Company offers $10,000 and the Railroad Company $5,000. Govern or's reward $2,500 for the arrest sod re covery of the property. —Edmond Stuart, formerly of Liver- >ool but recently from New Orleans, >ought in the New York market a few days ago, outside of the Cotton Exchange, some 3,000 bales of cotton and shipped the same to Liverpool. He sold the bill of lading to Duncan, Sherman A Co. receiv ing therefor bills of exchange, and has absconded. The bills of lading secure Duncan, Sherman A Co. from loss, which, unless the cotton is redeemed, will fall upon the merchants who sold to Stnarf. Stuart iB not a member of the Exohange. —The President, in conversation to day, said he had three vacant diatriot judgeships to fill, namely : in Alabama, Arkansas and Louisiana. It was proba ble he might be successful m selecting a suitable appointee for Alabama from that State, but as to the other States there was more difficulty, and be might, therefore, be forced to appoint peroous not now resident in them. As to Arkansas, those best fitted for the plaoe were either in favor of the Garland government or de sired its total overthrow. —Jersey City Presbytery publishes s verdict in the case of Rev. John S. Glen- denning, acquitting him of the charges of seduction and breach of promise of mar riage, but find him guilty of unministerial and unchristian conduct in making Miss Mary E. Pomeroy presents, visiting her flb frequently, and at nnaessonable hours, and living on such intimate terms with her as to occaaion public suspicion of im propriety. The Presbytery passed a res olution dissolving the pastoral relations between Glendenniug and Proepeot Ave nue Chureh in view of the disturbing in fluences incident to this clsss. FOREIGN. —The Grand Turk gives $10,000 for the famine stricken in Turkey. -Violent gale off Eugland. The John Cook was wreoked and fifteen drowned. Dozens of venue Is are ashore. Much dam age ashore. —The trial of Von Arnitn is to be pub lic, bat the judges have the discretion of dosing the coart during important reve lations. —Intelligence of the disasters on the coast of England by the gale of yesterday continue to bo received. At many places the winds blow with unprecedented vio lence. The brig Sibal, from Wilmington, N. C., for Liverpool, was driven ashore on Point Lynas and became a total wreck. Crew saved. —A violent storm occurred at St. Pe tersburg Monday night, causing much damage. The tide rose nine feet above high water mark, partly inundating the lower portions of the city. A large num ber of families of the poorer classes were driven from the houses. Over one thou sand persons were sheltered by police,and public kitchens were opened to supply the sufferers with food. The Republican Senators spent about an hour and a half in cauous this after- noon on the subjeot of Arkansas affairs, but adjourned without coming to any conclusion. Only a few Senators ex pressed themselves ia favor of interveo lion, and even these were not agreed as to the exact form of a movement. Others were disposed to postpone action os the present condition of the State did not teem to justify Congressional measures, all acoounta representing the people generally to be satisfied with their present government, with no cause for violent disturbance. The question of the oondition of Louis iana also becoming involved, several Sen ators said it would be found on examina tion that one or two of the other Southern States had no more legal existence than Louisiana, and therefore there should be an investigation concerning all of them, in order to establish their validity. Tha expression of views separated the Senators widely from the original topic of conversation. Tbe next eaucus will be held on the coll of the chairman. Alakana Claims Court. Washington, Deoember 9.—In the Alabama Claims Court to-day, argument waa resumed on ease 87 as to the charac ter of damages, the counsel for the gov ernment taking position that the court had no jurisdiction iu the matter of per sonal injury by acts resulting from the capture of Confederate ernisers. Gen. Roberts spoke in opposition. A decision will be rendered in a few days. Case 118, involving the qnestion of citizenship, naturalization, Ac., will, with oasa involving tbe same points, be argued to-morrow. Mjuiphis, December 9.— 1 The Presidents of tha various colored societies of this city have organized a society called the Knights' Brotherhood and Monumental Association, the objects of whioh are set forth in a lengthy address to the oolored people, published this morning. TAX NXOBOKS RENEW THE SIXOX AND ARX XXPUL8BD—A FUNERAL PROCESSION FIRED UPON—NEGROES GATHERING REINFORCE MENTS—WIRES NOT CUT. Cincinnati, Deoeinbor 9.—Tbe Times' Vicksburg dispatch says the fight was re newed ten miles from the city last even log between several hundred negroes snd forty white*. A courier was sent to Vicks burg for reinforcements, which were sent out without delay, and after a short bkir- mish four negroes were killed and three wounded, whereupon the nogroes retreat ed. Last night the negroes drove in tbe white pieketa from Ford Hill, and it is •aid have entrenched themselves thore. They are receiving large reinforcements from other counties. At lost accounts they were marching on the city up tho Issaquena road, driving the whites before them. They fired into a funeral proces sion, wounding one white man. The fire waa returned and threo negroes were killed. It was apprehended tbat the wires had been cut in the far South. It is now as certained that New York and New Orleans are working direct by the Western Union wires. Vicksburg, December 8.—Excitement about tha court house was intense this morning, bnt commanders of various com panies restored quiet, aud tha lives of Peter Crosby and other prisoners are safe. Lieutenant-Colonel O. S. Lee, aid de camp to Adjutant-General Packer and commander of the citizens, met in tbe court room fo-day to decide upon a course to pursue.
