M. Gamael, Ben Rice, — McNaugbton, Maleolm Tell, Robt. Barker, Gua Wright, Drew Lawrence, Calvin Browo, Jack, Bresenkaoa, Thomas Greer, Maleolm McNeil, Frank Mellrath and Louis Jepoon. Mayor Cleghom eeeetnbled the new ap pointees in tho Council Chamber yester day morning, and told them plainly and simply their duty. This is to prevent any violations of the city ordinances, to ab stain from expressions of political opin ion in the coming municipal contest. He enjoined on Captains to preserve etrict discipline, abstain themselves from polit ical expressions, and thus set a good ex ample to the men. His advice ia endorsed by the vast ma jority of tax payers. Citixons are of the opinion that policemen are paid to pre serve the peace, not to enhance the claims of this or that man for mayoralty or any other office. If the Mayor will promptly discharge every man, be he eaptain or private, who airs his personal preferences for city officers, or violates any of the rules provided for the govern ment of the police force, ho will win the thanks of every good citiien. Every ef fort should be made to prevent the police force from being demoralized. The rules provide that officers should walk thair posts and abstain from conversation ex cept to give information relative to their duties, and this applies as well to captains as privates. No exception is made. Bettor Than Life lneuranee. There is not one of three members of the Finance Committoe of Council who would consent to run again for aldermau. They havo tackled that money question and worked on it successfully—so well as to gain the commendation of citizens— but so much time and bother were re quired, that they are willing and glad to become private citizens, and leave alder- manic honors and work to those who have aspirations for the positions. They have had enough of it. The tackling of the bonds, floating debt, and current expenses of the city government is enough to make a man aiek. Looking This' Way.
