Since September 1st the manufactories
of Columbus have taken 4,160 bales of
ootton, against 1,845 same time in 1878—
showing an increase of 2,816, This dees
not include tha amount sent in the seed,
bought and ginned there. All report
business prospering. The Eagle and
Pbenix sells large qoentitiesof her fabrics
all over the country. The ootton blanket
is bought extensively by A T. Stewart

Deputy Marshal Robinson, Capt. Cash
and offloer Wm. Wood went out yesterday
afternoon and succeeded in securing in
oaah «700 60 for the relief of the family
of the late Mandrel Murphy. Those to
whom they applied responded liberally,
and they met with only one refusal. They
expect to go out on the same errand to
day, and believe confidently they will be
able to aeoure five hundred dollars more.
The money they collected is entirely dis
tinct from any other fund, and is now in
bank. This shows how the memory of a
good officer is held, and that the people
he served and in whose cause he loot his
life will not allow his family to suffer.
This sum, with the $2f>0 25 netted by
tha benefit and a private gentleman's do
nation of $100, makes the total sum thus
far raised $1,060 76. We think there
are some monies raised by other parties
which have no! yet been reported.

Employing Woodmen.
Accounts from all quarters are that
freeduien are anxious to remain with tbeir
present employers and make contracts
for the ensuing year. Terms' greatly vary.
Farming on shares or for a portion of tbe
crop appears to meet little favor. The
majority are iu favor of money wages—
eight dollars a'mimth and rations for first-
class hands. Another plan is to require
the freedmen to work four and s helf
days of the week for his employer end
the other day and a-balf for themselves—
the proprietor furnishing stock and land.
Other systems are proposed. All the en
deavors are to get labor'insuch a condition
as to be easily controlled, and readily
transferred from one species of work to
another. There is an exoess of freedmen
rather than a deficiency. Planters arc
really better off than last year, and they
desire to keep so. The Grange influence
is being exerted for good. We believo
that Southern farming ia to be conducted
on wiser and safer principles than ever,
and as a consequence the country will be.
come more prosperous.
