HOW THE COTTOH MOTH IUB*
•UTS DUBIJUI THE WINTER.
It has been positively oontradioted that
the moth feeds. Dr. Reese has said,
“That the inolh is short lived, and its
business not to feed, but to propagate;
that only Long lived motha feed.” To
■how the falseness of the position here
assumed, it will only be neoettaary to
prove the moth to be long lived. The
faots produced to show that the inaaot
passes tha winter in the moth state show
this; but, we will prodnoe other evidence
to show that it is not only loug lived, bat
that it also feeds. Prof. Reilly, the emi
nent Entomologist, whose opinions few
will venture to question, says in his essay
published a little more than a year ago,
“That fires, lights, and traps, eontainmg
attractive, bat poisonous sweets, intended
to allure and destroy the parent moths
are of little use, except where they can
be generally employed throughout whole
districts.” If the moths do not feed,
then traps containing poisonous sweets
would be of no use, although used by
every planter in the cottou States. I have
in iny possession moths whioh, at the
[ time of writing, are more than a month
[ old. They have been fed, principally,
g upon decayed fruit, and sometimes upon
honey and molasses thinned so as to not
f-gtiok them fast. At all times of the day
* they may be seen feeding upon these aub-
itunots.
Having shown that the moth feeds, it
Vemains to be ehown upon what it feeds
at the various seasons, fall, winter, and
•prioR-
Id th< fall it feeds npon fruit. For
.Dome reason it seem, fodeat of decaying
I frail, bat oftoa attacks aouad fruit. ^
t bare often observed them feeding upoii
■, sound poaches, while yet upon the tree,
f-Outwardly they were apparently unin
jured, bnt npon the peel being removed,
the pnlp beneath was found wanting.
Many parsons in Central Alabama will
rsooUect this condition of tha fruit during
the prevalence of the caterpillar in July
and August, 1873. After the fruit in the
orchard beoame scarce, or had disappeared
altogether, the motba oould be aeen under
the Muscadine vines and Persimmon
trees, where protected from stock, feed
ing upon the fallen fruit. To find them
thus engaged, it was ueoesssry to visit
■nob places just before dark or by moon
light.
At tbs appearance of cold wsathsr, tbs
moth seeks | retention in old houses, hoi.
low trees, and such places, where it re
mains in a torpid condition until the win
ter is passed, unless at any time sufficient
mild weather should intervene to bring
it out of its dormant condition. If this
should happen, food becomes neeessary to
sustain life, and it comes ont in searoh of
it. At that season, food cannot be found,
and of coarse, if the mild apell should
oontinne for a sufficient length of time, it
will die of starvation. Many are caaght
by oold ohangea while out, before they can
get back to tbeir places of protection, and
are destroyed. 1 have found in my ob-
aervatien lately, tbat mild weather in win
ter operates in another way to destroy tbs
moth. At a oertain temperature the moth
ie revived to inch an extent tbat food be-
comea necessary to anatsin life, but at
that temperature it cannot go in searoh of
food aud atarves, although food may be
eloaa at band. Thie was the oase with
soma of the moths in my cages
during the cold weather, near the
commencement of October. Tbat they
did not die from cold, or limitation
of life, is proved by tha fact tbat
in the eoldest weather all beoame torpid,
bnt revived again when the weather mod-
rated ; and that many of tboaa which re
vived, and art still olive, wars two or
three days older than soma of those that
perished.
Whan the mild weather of spring has
come, tbs moths wbioli have escaped
through the winter oome from their hid-
ng plaoas, and feed npon the honey con
tained in the flowers, nntil a oertain stage
f maturity it reached by the cotton,
hen the eggs for the first crop of worms
re deposited. This baa been my oonvic-
lon for atveral years, and events which
ave lately transpired have tended to
reugtben that conviction. Borne weeks
nee, I killed several swarms of bees,
he planks, of wbioh the hives were con-
ruoted, after the comb had been rsmov-
', ware left lying npon a soaffold. Next
orning, just after dawn, I discovered
be moths feeding upon the waste honey
n these planks. That day, after boiling
at the beeswax, my wife left the water
whioh it had been boiled standing in
a pot in tha yard. Naxt morning ehe
-lied my attention to a large number of
‘tbs in thepot just above the edge of
water. The weather had turned cool-
daring the night, and they wera be-
psbad so as to be unable to fly. I then
the moths in my cages npon honey,
y preferred it to anything alas, and
npon it in prefaranoe, whan supplied
th n variety of food.
