The Young Men's Catholic. Union.
This society has existed over a year. It
waa formed for social purposes, and some
very pleasant entertainments have been
given. The following officers were elected
on Monday night for the ensuing year :

deut—Louis Wells; Secretary and
Treasurer—P. J. Clark ; Librarian—L. A.
Collier; Board of Directors—L. J. ltaf-
ferty, G. II. Keys and J. B. England.
Election oj County Officers To-Hay.
The polls will bo opened at the various
precinota at 7 o'clock this morning and
will be closed at fi o'clock in the after-
uaon. The managers iti the city aro J. M.
McNeil, T. J. Shivers and W. E. Sande-
ford. By the law of the State uo one can
vote unless ho has paid to the Tax Collec
tor all hia State and comity taxes for the
year 1874. By law the Ordinary is given
power to open only one poll at eaoh elec-
tiou placo. If the candidates consent,
another can be quickly opened, and if
they agree the Ordinary will readily con
sent aud furnish an additional box and
the necessary clerks. The Sheriff has
deputixed a auffioieut force to keep order,
but no difficulties are apprehended. All
the voting at this precinct will be doue at
the Court-house. Tax Colleotor Frazor
will be there to receivo taxes. By the
law the managers aro instructed to throw
out, ou consolidation, the votes of all who
have not paid taxes. There is uo party
questiou in issue, ss all the candidates are
white Deinoorata. The entire race con
sists in personal popularity. Our adver
tising columns gives the names of candi
dates.

banjo what Ole Bull is to the violin. Then
there is George Wilson, the tambourinist,
who plays two of these instruments at the
saute time, aud Barlow, the boues mail,
who can outdo au African in his owu ele
ment. His superior as a negro delineator
is yet to be born The clioriisses, too,
are excellent, the music first class, and
they have some of the sweetest solo sing
ers. Go aud see them. You'll be highly
delighted.

—You must have paid all your taxos for
1874 or you cannot vote to-day.

—The freight on cotton from Columbus
to Baltimore is$l 05 per hundred pounds,
not $1 45, as the printer made it yester-
—Two thousand dollars in gold were
lately paid in Londou for a cup of coffee.
“Tho cup of coffee” was made by Mstiru-
go—on bia eased. It is a wonderful spec
imen of llie painter's art.
—Whisky saloons pay heavier taxes
than auy other interest in Columbus. The
proprietors claim a licenso should be paid
by merchants who sell by the bottle.
—There is a time fur all things, and
this is about the time of year for tiros.
—Several of the cotton commission
merchants bolievo that Columbus will
warehouse this season nearly 70,000 boles.
—City taxes will be chauged in only a
few minor particulars this year. Heal es
tate roiuains tho same, two per cent, ou
assessed valuation.
-The meat stalls in the Market routed
last January for $1,088, this year for
$1,170. Last year threo stalls were un-
rentod : this year only olio.
—Judging froiu the expressions of
members of Council we believe the two
city bridges will be made toll bridges at
the meeting next month. There is oou
siderable opposition to the measure.
—The latest aud most popular song is
“Times now, and what they uster was.”
—The Georgia Legislature meets next
Wednesday. Representatives Grimes and
Williams and Seuator Crawford will leave
for that place next Sunday or Monday.
