Receipts siuoe Friday night 408 bales,
against 1,377 sauio time last year; total
receipts, 46,695, against 41,C12 last year—
•loess, 5,083. To day, in 1873, 167 bales
ware received. From this date to Februa
ry 6th lost year the boats brought 1,683
bales to Colnmbus. To-day lost year Co
Iambus received 107 bales.
Bince September 1st the receipts at the
United States porta have fallen off to last
night 119,000 bales. The total receipts
now are 2,101,714, against 2,022,041—the
excess being 139,073 over last year. This
excess will be lost if the recoipts con
tinue lessening ns they have in the last
faw weeka. The New York Financial
Chronicle says heavy rains, especially in
Texaa, have impeded the movement of
ootton. Perhaps it hoa.
Cat Con .Estimates.
The latest issae of the Agricultural Bu
reau makes the highest estimate of tha
cotton crop of this season 3,784,000 bales,
and adds it cannot possibly be 4,000,000.
The Financial Chronicle gives a state
ment of several years of tha receipts to
Jonoary 1st, and the total crop. Thus in
1873 to January 1st, they were 1,858,349-
crop 4,170,388; 1879, 1,683,875—total
crop 3,980,508; 1871, 1,893,895— total
crop 2,974,851; 1870, 1,648,272—total
crop 4,352,317; 1869, 1,855,423—total
crop 3,154,946; 1874, 2,103,710. This
■hows that in 1873 to Jauunry 1st 41-5 of
the total crop had been received to Janu
ary 1st; in 1872, 42-8; 1871, 46-8; 1870,
87-8; 1869, 42-9. Apply either of these
pereantaffes to the present orop to Janu
ary 1st, and the total will be largely over
4,890,000 bales, whioh it the minimum of
t& Chronicle's estimate.

RAINY DAf AND QUESTION OP POPULARITY.
Yesterday occurrod the election for
officers of Muscogee county. The polls
were opened at 7 a. m., and closed a 6 p.
m. Many darkies assembled. The Tax
Collector had not sufficient assistance, and
many negroes did not have a chance to
vote, as the parties who were willing to
pay their taxes could not get the receipts,
such a orowd being aroand the entrenoe
to the court room, where the officer eateb-
lished himself. No party issue was in
volved. All was condncted quietly.
There was only one box to 9 e. tu.,
when another was established for the
whites.
We give below the returns from all tha
precincts except from Steam Mill and
Edwards. The vote there is never very
large. Oar returns from Bozemans are
incomplete. It went for Pond by a ma
jority elated at 14 to 72.

This shows that Sheriff Ivey and Tax
Receiver Thwentt, Treasurer Markham
and Sarveyor Lamar are certainly re
elected. The probabilities are in favor of
the re-election of J. J. Bradford as Clerk
of the Superior Court, though there is a
ohauco for G. Y. Pond in tho country
precincts to overcome the former’s city
majority. For Tax Collector the contest
ia yet undecided. The vote reported in
our table atauds : Klink 569, Andrews583,
and Burma 555, with two precincts to
hear from.
The total city vote was 1,574—618 iu
whito box and 956 in colored.
Tho Tax Collector forgot to pay his own

that tho use which was made of United
States troops zeemz to have been an ex
treme exercise of power, and one for
which tho President, who is primarily
responsible for it, must find it very diffi
cult to show adequate authority. The
United States guarantees to each State a
republican form of government, and on
requisition, protection against do meat ic
violence. In this case them was no recent
requisition, and there wae no actual Yio-
lencos. The Governor called in troops in
anticipation of his own helplessness, and
engaged their commanders in acta which
have never yet been performed by

oid not aid the State foroes. They re
