DAILY ENQtnHKR-StTH: COLtXMBUS, GEORGIA, SATURDAY MORNING, JANUARY 23, 1878.
CHIEF PAETIEE IS THE
T “ SCANDAL CASE.
Xba o««> of Tilton to. Beecher Mill oc
cupies
the Brooklyn court, cud draws
eager crowd* daily. We do not care to
copy any of tlie testimony. It does not
eppesr toTary greatly from the “state
ments" lately published by the parties
and the evidence given in the ohurch in-
Testig*t' on -
But we And accounts of the
appearanoo and bearing of the parties im
mediately involved, that may be interest
ing to our readers. A correspondent of
the New Orleane Picayune writes:
In a photograph of the trial, whioh will
ooeupy muoh of this correspondence for
a while, Ur. Beeoher’s features would be
new to nobody. But he is a striking con
trast to his former protege and present
adversary, who sits so near and yet so
far. He is bnll-neoked, thick and
burley in faoe and figure; more so, as
well as older than extaut photographs be
tray ; on the whole, not very preposses-
ing J in physique, especially on a trial of
just this sort. But bis face, though sen
suous, is massive, lion like, and foil of
conscious power and pluok. Tilton, on
the opposite, is of commanding stature,
grace! ul in form and handsome in fea
tures, with a fair, opaque skin, and a ohee
feminine softness and regularity of physi
ognomy, which the battle of life, and in
tense concentration to the labors which
won him suoh early distinction, have har.
dened to a thoroughly masculine type—all
but the luxuriantly flowing waves of chest
nut hair now streaked with gray, but
tossed back on his shoulders still with a
woman-like partiality.
Of the ladies directly interested, tha
New York Tribune says:
For the timo Mrs. Tilton was the cen
tral figure of attraction. 8he was very
pale, and ber manner was that of a timid,
shy wumsn, who felt ill at (fees under
hundreds of staring eyes. The crowd in
stinctively instituted a comparison be
tween ber and Mrs. Beecher, and the re
sult was not fnvorable to Mrs. Tilton. It
was apparent that they were opposite in
character. On ono aide was a weak,
timid, sentimental woman; on the other,
a positive, determined, and, even in her
old age, a handsome woman. Mrs. Bee
cher wus cool and self-possessed through
out the proceedings, notwithstanding the
bitter aitaoks upon her husband's honor.
Mrs. Tilton was evidently nervous and
embarrassed. Mrs. Beeober has a classi
cal face, full of force and expression;
Mrs. Tilton's faoe is of a common-place

A Medical lilonkey.
All previous narratives of intelligent
proceedings on the part of animals aro
thrown into the shade by the following
aecount of a medical monkey, described
by the Oriental correspondent of a Lon-
dondon journal:
He one day saw a monkey holding a
snake by the throat and rubbing its head
in the dirt; but as the gtonud was moiat
and damp the snuke was not readily
killed by this mode of punishment.
Every now and then the monkey would
look moat knowingly into the face of the
reptile to see if it was dead; and in the
oourse of one of these investigations
the monkey received a'severe bite. This
angered him, and he speedily dispatched
the snake, but its coils had hardly re
laxed before the monkey reeled and fell
prostrate, apparently in all the agonies of
death by poison. By this time an aged-
looking monkey arrived on the soene, and
after examining the bodies of the snake
and its viotim, be immediately started for
some neighboring bashes, where he col
lected some leaves of the plant known ns
ths red oherohita. These he rapidly and
skillfully fashioned into a sort of pill,
whioh be administered to his snake-bitten
companion, who speedily revived and
walked off with his .phy - i ci an. The story
is declared to oome fiotn trustworthy
