■WAD A.\D ITOJin.
i Burn* vas born poor, ha lira!
ba died poor. He wea the
genius ol his age, and one of
grandest that eve'f lived, yet like
_ another man of grand ability,
Buma starred while the lower and mean-
•* ereatoros about him grew fat, and
1 strong, like vulgar plants on a
MfariHve dung hill. After the noble poet
ot nature died, and blackguards
for very shame ceased to re
write him, Scotland and Kngland bo
s'® to feel a pride in the man who alone
'Vrtaldad tho magic wand that had touched
tta heart of the world, ao they determin
ed to raise a monument to Burns, aa if
Mch a man needed a local tablet to per
petuate Ilia often erring, but aver sub-
lime ganiua.
The monument «u mined, however,
Mud Without any tournament where flcti-
dioo® Knights, liko the apangled riders of
• diwp circus, lilted at moveable rings,
Md aiapering dulcinean imagined the
ring on the end of a blunt staff, the heart
of n foe. There was no auoli low effort
nt sensation to raise the funds for an
oltar to the demi-god of song. That was
• consideration at least to bin old
mother, for when sho saw the monu
ment in Ayrshire she knew it was
• free will offering to her noble son,
contributed to by tho poor aud rich alika.
No horrible gammon of half inebriated
Don Qaixotes ridiog spavinedlioeananten,
contributed to it, it wea the
offering of the world’s people, who appre
ciated the language in which “poor
Bobby” wrote. But this is a curious
world. When the old woman looked at
the monument abe remembered how her
aen had atarved, and how his family was
then Buffering, and she remarked to the
Duke of Argyle, who wa* standing near,
l>nt who did not believe in tho buffoonery
of tilling at rings: 44 Yea, my lord, it
mama good. I wish Bob were alive to
*ee it, but when alive he asked them for
bread, which he needed ; and now that
he’s dead they give him a stone that he
needs not, for, my Lord of Argyle, men
will not remember my son because of this
monument in Ayrshire, ”
“Now wo heat-loud shouts in the style
of Don Quixote for a tournament, and
all the consequent concomitants essential
to making it a sickening bnrlesqne on
chivalry, and this to build a monument
to men in a local and unknown place, who
have won a position in history, and whose
reoord the wot pen of Fame is ready to
reoord. Tho whole aickly sentimentalism
i> utterly repulsive; tho Confederate
dead need no monument to perpetuate
their daring. As woll raise a monument to
Cincinnatus. But there are thousands of
woundffd Southern soldiers in this land,
there are thousands of widows and or
phans, and there aro but few of them
above want. If wo are anxious to show
our love for the noble desd, let it be done
by earing for tho heroio living; let us
raise above wnnt every crippled soldier,
and let us provido for the widows aud tho
orphans of the brave meu sleeping in sol
diers'graves. We do not care if every
town in the Houth had a soldiers’ monu
ment, the dead do uot need it. Lot ours
imfaf Lfruinn <>f .‘.‘M^ire fjpr out
living; tho widow and the orphan and the
gallant maimed aro our wards, and it is
better to give bread to them than to give
atonea to the dead, whose heroio deeds
need no commemorative tablet.”
If the people hnvo to be worked up to
patriotism by the lAUghablo burlesque of
a nineteenth century tournament tilting
at loose rings, why, tboir patriotism is
cheap and their hearts shallow. The dond
have wou their record, let us care for tho
living, and we who write this, and who
bonor tho noble dead, and respeot the suf
fering liviug, stand ready to aid the good
work, without tho vulgar incentive of
rings, blunt lances and llosauautes.

NOT ADMITTED.
Washington, Jaunnary 23.—The Ala
bama IiivcstigAling Committee holds its
session with closed doors, despite the pro
tect of tho Deiuociatio minority. This
excites a good deal of comment, which
will find expression when its report is
submitted to the House. On Saturday
Representative Bromberg, of Alabama, a
Liberal Republican, visited the room in
which the committee holds its sessions, by
invitation of Mr. Luttrell, a member of
the committee, but was told by Mr. Co-
burn, tho chairman, that they were about

to retire. Here was a member of Con
gress from (ho State under investigation
excluded from the committee room.

any other member of the House in point
of fairnesH, ability and integrity, he has
not been summoned as a witness, nor bus
