—A bill has been presented in the Ilt-
noie Legislatorc to appropriate $50,000 to
complete the Stephen A. Dongles moun*
meat in Ohioago.
—The extensive sefe factory of Beard
ft Bros., in St. Lou.s, was completely
gutted by fire.
—The Miller’s River Manufacturing
Company’s woolen miii at Athol, Mass,
is burned. Loss $25,090.
—Henry Nichols, a prominent New York
lawyer, is a defaulter to the amount of
$200,000. He was trustee of several large
estates.
—Porman having resigned bis eoat in
Congress, was sworn in ss a member of
the Florida Assembly. All tho Republican
members have bolted, leaving the Senate
without a quorum. Republic in leaders
nay the Seuate shall have no quorum be
fore Tuesday, when a United States Sena
tor is to be voted for. The object is to
prevent action on the contested seat of
Republican from the 21st district, who
would be ousted if a vote oould be tskeu.
—Custom House Inspector Harris, of
New York, was sentenced to the peniten
tiary for two years, for complicity in
- smuggling iuto port 20,0(K) cigars.
—Mr. Loring Andrews, one of Now
York’s most* prominent commercial men,
and founder of the hide and leather house
of Loring Andrews ft Sons, died at his
reeidenoe on Fifth avenue, aged 75 years.

Washington, January 24.—The Senate
Committee on Railroads have agreed to
report against the Northern Pacific road
and all other subsidies except Thompson's
Sonth Pacific, which they will consider
Monday.
It is said by one of the most prominent
Repnblioan Senators that daring the pres
ent week a joint resolution will be intro-
dueed, recognising the Kellogg govern
ment, irrespective of Pinehbaok'a admis
sion as Senator from Louisiana or any
other Southern State. As some have
privately suggested, this is out of the
question.
Sheridan will remain at New Orletns,
without limit as to time.

—Mr. L. N. Whittle, of Maoou, has re
igned bis position as member of the
Board of Trustees for the Blind Asylum.
—The Hawkinsville Are is supposed to
be Ihe work of an incendiary.
—A negro boy had one of bis legs tom
eff near the knee joint, in Griffin, on
Wednesday evening. He had jumped
upon a wagon to ride, bot fell off, his leg
catching in the wheel.
Chickens are quoted iu Gainesville at
12 to 15 ceuis eaoh, butter at 15 to 20o.,
and eggs at 15o. Bat what's the use of
tantalizing people by these quotations,
when the railroad freight charges uru so
nigh as to doable the cost by the time
they roach Columbus ?
—The Griffla News says that a corps of
United States engineers are sarveyiug a
route for a double-track railroad from
Gnutersville, on the Tennessee river, to
Brunswick, and have now reaohed Con
cord, in Pike oounty. The appropriation
was made by Congress a year ago The
route, so far as surveyed, ia favorable.
The Athens Watchman reports small-
pox prevalent in the lower part of Clarke
county. •
—The wheat crop in north Georgia is
represented by the Gainesville Democrat
to be unusually promising and of increased
acreage.
—Thomas Honan, an old citizen, who
had been continually in the service of the
Central railroad siuoo 1839, died in Savan
nah on Thursday.
The Gainesville Democrat says that
the contest for Congress in the Ninth
District will be betwcou Hon. Allen Can
dler, of Hall, and Hon. B. H. Hill, with
the obanocs in favor of the former. The
Democrat supports Mr. Caudler.
—A meeting of the members of the
Legislature representing the oountiea of
the Ninth Congressional District was held
in Atlanta on Thursday. Hon. B. H. Hill
was sent for and reo treated to address tbs
mooting, which he did in his eloquent end
impressive style. He told them that he
considered himself a citizen of the dis
trict still, and thst while he was no candi
date for Congress, if the people saw
proper to send him there, ho would serve
them to the best of his humble ability,
—The New* says that the extraordinary
mortality in Atlanta on Friday will attract
goneral attention. Up to noon ou that
day twelve deaths had been registered—a
number never before equalled in the same
time in the city. Most of the cases are
attributed to colds, and the cause of them
is laid principally to the eoudition of the
streets, eidowalks and crossings.
—Hon. O. P. Hansell has been elected
Mayor of Thoinaaville, with the following
board of Aldermen : Messrs. A. P. Wright,
R. P. Smith, T. C. Mitchell, R. H. Htrda-
way, Joseph Jerger and M. Isaac.
—On Friday the boiler of a locomotive
exploded on the night train of the Savan
nah and Charleston Railway, near Hardee-
ville, at 3 a. m. The engineer, John
Booman, was horribly mashed and cannot
recover. Two firemen were also injured
but no other damage.
—We learn from the Savannah Adver
tiser that Mr. John R. Wilder, who has
been a Director of the Central Railroad
for twenty-eight years, has resigned that
position.
