He looked into the waiting room at the
central depot yesterday, eaw an elderly
oouple there waiting to go Went, and then
after makiug euro that the epeeiul police
men was not around he entered the room.
He wee a man who had Been other duyu;
that waH plain. Hie plug bat wag yean old,
hi, coat ehono with age and grease, and
there wan no collar on his neck. A police
man would hare mentally reoorded him
aaa “vag" without a moment’B hesitation,
and the fellow would have atood a chance
of being trotted off to the central station.
“My good friends," he commenced as
he approached the ionoeent old coup|e
from Vermon', “for heaven's sake help
me a little! ”
“Who are you?” asked the husband,
struok with the bummer's lonesome voice
and general hard look.
Name’s Jones—Kansas—grasshoppers!”
replied the man, turning away his bead as
if deeply affected.
“Be you one of those poor unfortunates
who were almost eat up by the grasshop
pers!” exclaimed the woman, her sympa
thies all aroused.
“The same, madam,” sighed Jones;
“had to leave the Stats—going te New
Hampshire—got as far as here and
money gavo out. Heaven only knows
what’ll become of us.
“Are you married?” she asked.
“Yea 'urn—wife'n nine ohildren; they're
out here on the oommons in a wagon, ail
siok and shivering with the ooldl”
“I’ve beam about them grasshoppers;
were they very thick?" asked the man.
“Thick!” echoej Jones, “you couldn't
tell the difference 'twixt day and night,
and the roaring of thier wings made ns
deaf!”
“My graahu ! but wasn’t that awful?”
sighed the womau.
“I had a hundred acres of corn, fifty of
wheat, thirty of oats, nice meadow, lots
of fruit, but iho grasshoppers made a beg
gar of ms in five hours!’ continued Jones.
“They eat the siuff fight up, did they?”
“Eel! Why, the farm ■ JuUed,as jf a lire
had passed over itl They took every
thing—even chewed up log chains. I
timed ’em on 1UU rods of fence, and every
mouthful of it went in thirty-seven min
utes by the watch.”
“I never heard of the likes!" exolaimed
the man.
“There’s folks east horo who don't
believe it,” continued Jones; “but it is a
solemn fact that tho grasshoppers chewed
up iron wedges, gnawed the boards off'n
the barns,’ bit plowpoiuts all up, and if
we hadn’t hid our horses in the cellar,
they'd have been munobed sure! ”
“And you had to leave?”
“Yes, sold my land for eleven dollars,
got my family into the wagon and star
ted east. Ben ISO days coming this far,
and buried two children on the way.
Lor’ only knows wbat,s to become of
us 1 I wish I was in this river out there;
then my heart wouldn't be burstiu’ with
grief and trouble 1”
“Poor man!” sighed the woman. “Eb
enszer, let’s give him two dollars.”
“Two dollars is a pile of money,”
mused the man.
“but it's an awful sad case, Ebenezer
—null to tech a heart of flint.”
“The Lord loveth a cheerful giver,"ad
ded Jones, as be drew his sleeve aurosa
his uose.
“Wall, I s'pose it’s a hard ease, and
we won’t be any poorer for givin' two
dollars,” said the husband, as be pulled
out his wallet and handed out a $2 bill.
“Thanks, my kind friend,” replte I
Jones, “I hope you will never see the
trouble I,m huving. 'ibis’ll buy med-
ioine and provision, and kinder help us
along like, and I feel as if I could throw
my arms arouud ye and hug ye for j our
kindness. ’’
“That’s all right." said the husband.
“I wish it was ten," added the woman,
as she shook Jones’ ontstretobed hand.
He slid out, and ten minutes afterward
might have been seen in a front street
saloon pouring bad gin out of a decanter,
and remarking to the bar-keeper:
“Sky, old pard, was it in Virginia or
Kansas that the grasshoppers was so
thiok ?"

New York special to Chicago Tribune.}
Few who enter iu the forenoon leave
the room before the hour of adjournment
arrives. Many spectators come provided
with lunohes—notably those who oooupy
•sets in the gallery. Between one and
two o’elook in the afternoon ham sand-
witches and mince pies sie in great de
mand, and when the anpply of these arti
cle* fails the hungry spectator is obliged
to satisfy his eppeiite with a measure of
routed peanuts. After the principal
obaraotera in the great suit, tbs ancient
vender of pies who haunts the court
house ranks next in importance. This
high-strong pie-man has become a part of
tbs trial now, and he brooks no familiari
ty. He administered, yesterday, to a
prominent member of Flymonth (Jhuroh,
a crushing rebuke. “These mince pies
are very bad,” remarked tbe church mem
ber iu question. “Werry bad, air!" re-
plisd the pie man; “but they're not half
as bad as the langwedge as you’ve been
listening to all day.” This pie maD, on
the first day of tbe trial, was tbe meekest
men in tbe oonrt room.
