DAILY ENQUIRER - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, FRIDAY MORNING, JANUARY 29, 1875.
(r ntal Ontrac* la Atlanta.
T,«»t night about nine o'clock two negroes
ret to the residence of Mr. John Casey,
w Mitchell street, ue«r the fruejineus’
Mllege. " u<1 o° inn “ tt ®4 a most diabolical
ontrage upon the person of Mr. Casey.
, near as we oan learn the facts they
„e as follows: Mr. Casey keept a little
troocy and retail liquor store, and last
nieht two negroes oalled for a quart of
whisky. The whisky being in the cellar,
\[r Casey, accompanied by the negroes,
went there to draw it, and had been there
only a few moments before Mrs. Casey
heard au unusual noise. Immediately af
terwards one of the negroes rushed past
her op the stairs. She then went to see
wbat was the matter, and found her hus
band prostrate with his throat cut aud
the remaining negro rifling bis pockets.
This scoundrel, upon seeing Mrs. Cagey,
r „n and she immediately screamed for
help, and several neighbors came to her
assistance. About 12 o'elook last night
offiioer Owens recognized John Purifoy,
from description given by Mrs. Casey,
as one of the two who had committed the
ontrage—and probable murder—and ar
rested him. Upon bis being taken be
fore Mrs. Casey, abe immediately recog
nized Purifoy as the man who was on her
husband aud did the ontting. Since
then the ki i'e—on ordinary pooket one
—has been found and is ulso recognized
asu Purifoy’s. This morning, from infor
mation had from Purifoy, a negro named
Jacob Stafford was arrested and is nn-
donbtcdly the accomplice of Pnrifoy in
the matter, though Mrs. 0. could nut
fully identify him. A large lot of chew
ing tobacoo was captured which had been
deposited by these negroes, in the pos
session of Virgil Cook, another disciple
of llam. Mr. Casey is still living,
though but little hope is entertained of
his recovery. His throat is cat very bad
ly, the windpipe being severed. There
is a strong sentiment expressed in favor
of lynohing these scoundrels, aud a sum
mary punishment may be inflicted upon
them. The liven of our people are not
secure under existing slate of affairs,
and it ia no wonder they become impa
tient to take the law in their own hands,
IVe would oounsel moderation, howevers
in this and all other oases. The law is
strong enough, if it is only executed.

Logan on Mlo Foot.
Franeed thera in npon the arena of the
great debate, like a trick mule in aoirens,
or a spavined nightmare upon the track of
a beautiful dream—Logan, of Illinois.
There war u vision of mustaches, eye
brows and hair, piled on eaoh other in
arches; a large brandishing of arms, a
pose, and a striduious war-whoop; end
ranch as though a picture of the Deerfield
massacre had stepped out from the pages
of our early history, Logan look the
American Senate by its largo, oapacious
ear. And then he wont for his mother
tongue. He smote it right and left, hip
and thigh, and showed no mercy. Swing
ing the great broad.ox of his logic high in
the air ho turned it era it foil, and with
the hammer side struck the language of
sixty millions of people fairly in the face,
and mashed it beyond recognition. Under
his stroke the floor of the American Sen
ate was spattered with the remnants of a
once proud vocabulary, aud messengers,
doorkeepers aud pages were covered from
head to foot with spray. In the fearful two
hours which followed the first roar of his
oration, all the parts of speech were rout
ed and pnt to flight. There were orphan
ed adjectives and widowed nouns, bach
elor verbs driven to polygamy, and poly
gamy verba left lonely, conjunctions dis-
se<ered, prepositions scattered, adverbs
disheveled and distorted, and syntax
flung into wild disorder. It was a great
day for Logan.
The hong of Six pence.
Mr. Tyler, in his “Primitive Culture,’
thus applies to this woik i ho law of the
interpre ation of myths:—“Obviously,
the four and twenty black birds are four
aud twenty boars, and the pie that holds
them is the underlying earth, covered with
the over-arebing sky: how true a touch of
natnre it is, when the day breaks—the
birds begin to sing! The king is the sunr
and bis eonnting out bis money is pour,
ing out the sunshine, the golden showe-
of Dana*. The queen ia the moon, and her
transparent honey the moonlight. The
maid ia the rosy figure drawn, who rises
before the sun, her master, and bangs oat
ths clouds, bis clothes, across the sky.
The particular blackbird who so tragi
cally ends the tale by snipping off her
nosa ia the bonr of sunshine.”
—Jack and Jim Reynolds, cousins and
loafers, were playing poker in a bar-room,
near Augusta, Maine. Jack held a
straight, with an see at the, head, and, to
his intense delight, Jim pnt down the
money as fast as he raised nntil the pool
amounted to over $10. Then Jim called,
and Jaok threw down his straight. Then
Jim threw down fonr scor. This indica
ted the miracle of five aces in one pack,
or a fraud, and Jaok expressed his opin
ion that there was “shen&nagen going
on." He examined Jim's aces, and found
that one of them was a tray, with the
end spot chalked oat. A fight insued
for the stakes, in which Jim was stabbed
and Jack bad his nose bitten, bat neither
got the money, booause some body stole
it while they were fighting.
—Among the usages of Romo is the
proclamation of a jubiloo year at the
termination of each quarter of a century.
Pina IX, receiving the tiara in 181(1, and
expelled from his capital in 1818, con
cluded that the Catholio world was too
much disturbed by revolution in 1850 to
pay devout attention to, or reap any bene,
fits from a jubilee. When he was lying
on a sick bed in the Bpring of 1870, so
grieviously ill that hia life bang on the
balance, lie is said to have exclaimed :
“I shall not die nntil I have proclaimed
the jubilee.” The closing year of tho
third quarter of the century is now here,
and according to nsage the old Pope has
proclaimed 1875 a jubilee year. The su
perstitions give a meaning to his words,
indicating that he will die soon after his
proclamation.
