Appealed to before in vain. Wo cannot
Attribute this want of nuccess to npathy,
trot rather to the desire to help tho suffer
ing living rather than to pa; honors to
Ihe dead. There is not n hill in tho Roulh
that does nottower n monument toSonth-
•n valor, nor a at ream by which thoy
fought that is not a memorial of their
doting. Every homo has its cenotaph.
And each hoait has a hero enshrined in its
pnreat depths. But do you know there
Ale soldiers' widows in this good city of
Oolnmbus who, to-day, this blessed Hah.
bath day, need bread ? Yes, good friends,
while you are working for storm
to placo above, or erect in honor
of dead fathers, there aro poor
Women actually suffering for food
and raiment within hearing of our church
bells. Uis honor, the Mayor knows it,
we know it, and every man and woman,
Whose heart can be touched by a story of
want, knows it. There nre soldiers’ littlo
ones, pincbod-faced and squnlid, growing
up in rags, huuger ntni poverty, and tlio
fnture is oue of no brilliant promise,
makes us shudder to coutoiuplato it, and
yet they could bo saved—saved for tho
sake of themselves aud their fallen sires.
Good ladies, think of your own dear ones
and ask yourselves if tho work that saves
a soul, and elevates n pauper into ruspoet
and good citizenship, and independence
ia not more nocessary than a monument
that at the best will be all too small and
unworthy tho bravo men your hearts yearn

“A White Hand,” a story of Hobletac
oblige, by Ella Farm mi, is a story of great
pnrity aud rare merit. We do not know
the writer, bnt sbo will soon make herself
known. There is not a Sunday-school
library in the land that would not be
beuefittod by this work, nor a reador who
will not rise from its perusal with bettor
rosolves. Wo commend it heartily, while
refraining from quoting at length from
it, as wo wish our readors to get it for
themselves. It cau be bad at our book
stores, or through I). Lntbrop & Co.,
Boston, from whom wo received it.

Tux is Pacific Railroad bill is engineered
by (\ I*. Huntington and Jay Gould,
who have joined forcos for this purpose.
These two railroad magnates had s secret
meeting at ti e Fifth Avenue Hotel, in
New- Yoik, on Sunday last, and tfco result
is already visible in au increase of the
crop ol newspaper litoraluto iu opposition
to the measure. These parties naturally
desire to maintaiu their present monopoly
of the railroad communication with Cali*
forms, and thus to iucroase the large
profits already received l*y them from
Congressionalsubfidies to the Central liuo
owned by them. It is believed that they

to compromise the'Sheriffalty at Vicks

putting in a deputy is so internal that the
project has been abandoned. Tho people
will recognize nobody but Flanti.ig.m as
Sher.ff utilil forced to by the military,

miscellaneous cargo, which was entirely

—No prospect oi a speedy settlement
of the freight war from Chicago ea*>t.
The reduction of passenger Dre increases
the complication. Several links urge

The True Economy —The question is
not, how cheaply we can manage to keep
soul and body together, but how can we
bring both body and soul to the highest
condition of vitality and power? To live
nuolbing more than to exist. How can
we live moat nnd best? How can we feel
intellect and affection, conscience, sym
pathy, imagination, reverence, ah well as
the physic »l nystom ? All pinching and
restricting of diet is injurious in the long
run. The bean man, tho boan*broad man,
one-iuebl-a-dsy man, the mau who goes
mousing about the world, intent only on
cheapnos.*,novor makes the scales of pow
er kick the beam. He waites more than
he saves. He checks an income instead
of stopping an outgo. The men who
m dee the most ado over the petty pru
dences of life, ami perpetually obtrude
their parsimonious practice on public no
tice never amount to anything, or do any
thing of account. Man wants all he can
use, uHsimilati’, organize, reproduce. The
things that strengthen, and beautify his
sential manhood, that enrich his senti*
inontsaad refine hi t sensibilities, that en
noble his intellect ond enlarge the scope
of bis being and I he horizon of his possi
bilities, belong to him by right, as tho
crown aud purple belong to royalty.
Every man ought to aspire and labor to
live generously, and bave a comfortable
And tasteful home, nnd surround
himself and his family with everything
that tends to increase health and happi
ness, and create an atmosphere of intelli
gence and refinement. Beauty, elegance,
art, society, music, are our birthright.
It is uot waste to spend what one hss for
thiugs that foster a noble pride, heighten
self-respect, beautify tho body, and culti
vate tho mind. It is truo economy that
spends something for books and pictures,
and for occasional glimpse* of nuture.
Tho charities and humanities are not lux
uries, that tho poorest man on earth
should deny himself of them. The lov
ing, trustful, adorning sympathy that for
gets its own wants and meagre resources,
and breaks the costliest thing it has on
the head of tho one beloved, is not a reck
lessness to bo censured, but a devotion to
be commended for its divine nobility.
Saving may bo ant-like and beaver-like,
but sacrifice is Goil-like. — llerald of
Health.
Taking Cold.—Ono way is to bundlo
up in furs, or mufflers, tight about the
neck; take a brisk walk, go into a warm
room— 1 church, loolure room, or concert —
sit w tb your things all on, get warm, per
spire freely, breathe vitiated air for an
hour or two, and when thoroughly relax
ed, the pores of tho »-kin nil open, go out
into tho cold, dlltup air, and you will soon
begin to shiver. After having a chill,
send for the doctor, and he will doso you
with something hot; then go to bed; then
if left alone loug enough, you may get
up in a day or two, and in a fortnight or
so you may repoat the imptudonct*.
Tliero aro sovcral other ways to take
cold / We will uteution but ono, aud that
is to “over eat.” Stuff tho stomach with
improper food, more than it can digest,
and you will *uou find yourself “all clog
ged up" with a cold. You will cough or
sneeze, blow y »ur nose, and “wonder how
in tho world you look such u cold.”—Sci
ence of Health.
Simple Cure for Boils.—Dr. Simon, a
physiciuu of Lorraine, gives a new euro
for boils—namely, by treating them with
camphorated alcohol. As soon us the
culmination point of a boil makes its ap-
pearnnoo, ho puts a littlo of tho liquid in
a saucer, nnd, dippiug tho end of his lit
tle finder in it, rubs the inflamed surface,
especially the central part, repeating tho
operttion eight or ton tuues for about
half a miunte. Ho then allows the sur
face to dry, placing over it a slight coat
ing of csiuphoratod olive oil. He says
that four such applications will iu almost
all c tses cause boil* to dry up and dis
appear ; the operation to be performed
morning, noon aud evening. The an
nouncement of so simple a cuio for such
a painful malady will boar repetition.
CuiLiiLAiN Liniment.—Oue ounce of
camphorated spirits of wine, half an
ounce of subucetato of load; mix, aud
apply in the usual way, three or four
times a day. Some persons use vinegar
as a preventative ; its olfioacy might ho
increased by tho udditiou to the vinegar
of one-fourth of ita quantity of camphor-
ttted spirit.
