—The paper-board mill fit Millburn,
N. J., burned Thursday ; loss $40,000.
—A. G. Burt, a prominent banker of
Cincinnati, and Dr. L. L. Pinkerton, of
Lexington, Ky., are dead.
—The will of Mrs. Ann White Vose, of
Boston, bequeaths $350,000 to the public
institutions of that city.
—The large dry goods firm of R. O.
FuIIenweider & Co., Bloomington, 111.,
has failed.
—Frederick Douglass and several prom
ineut colored men from Arkansas and
Alabama, suggest a conference of the col
ored Representatives now in Washington,
to considor the course necessary to pursue
in case of a failure by Congress “to fur
nish the necessary legislation for the
S rotection of life and property in the
outh.”
—A dispatch, purporting to come from
a reliable source, says the James boys
were captured at Missouri City by Sheriff
Groom of Clay county, and a posse of
twenty men. No particulars.
—R. B. Ramsey, a prominent citizen
of Colliersville, Tenn., was killed Thurs
day night by falling into a ditch.
—The thirty-first annual session of the
Grand Division Sons of Tomperanco was
held in New Brunswick, Pa. The annual
reports were read, showing that there are
ninety-six divisions of the order in the
State, all in a flourishing condition.
—Over 50,000 tons of ice have been
boused at Rockland Lake, N. Y.
—The manufacturers of firearms in
this country are reported to be very busy.
Large orders from foreign governments
are now being executed. Turkey is having
600,000 of the Peabody-Martini rifles
made, Prussia lots of needle-guns, Russia
100,000 of Smith & Wesson’s pistols, while
Spain calls for all that can be made of the
Winchester and other breech-loaders.
—The Tom Paine memorial building at
Boston was dedicated with appropriate
ceremonies.
—The Ohio and Mississippi Transfer
Company's stable in St. Louis, was burned
with fifty horses and a large amount of
hay. The loss is estimated at $20,000.
—It is understood, says the New York
Post, that tho Rotbschild Seligman eyndi
cate eonoluded with the Treasury Depart
ment a contract for $25,000,000 of the
new 5’s, and that with this contract goes
the privilege of taking the entire unsold
remainder at any time within six months.

—Two young men of Kaufman, Texas,
have fallen upon fortunes recently. Mr.
E. Ayres it successful in an antiquated
lawsuit in Mississippi, by which he gains

O. Ilallonquist inherits by the death of
uncle in South Carolina, $80,000.
—The New York Pott says the Toledo,
Wabash and Western Railroad will default
on February interest and proposes
funding sobome to stockholders.
—General John B. Jordon addressed
the Senate Friday. His speech is highly
oommended. It was a very able vindica^
tiou of the Southern people, and full oi
good points, whioh the Radicals will find
unanswerable. The Senator gave utter
ance to many honest and manly senti
ments. They cannot fail to greatly aid

salaries ten per cent. The Brotherhood
of Engineers met and appointed a com
mittee of remonetranoe. Venderbilt was
unyielding. A compromise was effeoted
by which the engineer* are paid three
