TDK COMPROMISE MEASURES.
NswOblfaws, February 7.—The Con-
servativea lost night considered the prop,
osition of adjustraeut submitted by the
Congressional Committee. Neither the
terms nor tbe action of the caucus hare
transpired. The compromise involves a
submission of the contested seats under
the election of 1874 to tbe Congres
sioual Committee, persons si
turned not to disturb tbe present
government known as the Kellogg
government, or seek to impeach the Gov
ernor for any past official acta.
The Conservatives discussed the matter
without action.
The Republicans say they will accept
no compromiso.
The Conservative meeting at Cloy
statue also protest in strong language.

TBB CONDITION OF TBK VARIOUS APPROPRI
ATION BILLS.
Wabminoton, February 7.—Members of
th# Committee of Ways and Means say
erroneous reports of tbe Committee’s ac
tion regarding the tariff and taxes have
found their way into print, seriously in
juring trade. Tbe statement is author
ised that uo final action has been taken
upon any tariff or tax. The whole subject
is still unsettled. The condition of the
appropriation, navy and fortification bills
are laws. The consular and diplomatio
bill will soon bo presented to tbe Presi
dent. The Executive, Legislative and Ju
dicial bill is before tbe Committee of
Conference. The Indian bill on account
of a deficit on aocount of the Choctaw
clause has been recommitted. The Army
bill is in commitee of tho whole; also
the Military Academy and Post-office
bills. The River and Harbor and Defi
ciency bills are not yot reported.
A large amount of other public busi
ness will require night sessions.

Charleston, February 7.—The Na
tional Grange yesterday and engaged in a
pleasure trip up the Ashley river, and met
at night for busiuesa of a p.ivate charac
ter.

— 1 he Palace Hotel at San Franeisoo
will require 4,000 locks and 48,000 keys.
—The trustees of the Southern railroad
met in Cincinnati on tha fid and condi
tionally awarded to the Cleveland Roll
ing Mill Company the contraot for fur
nishing iron rails, also street rails to tbe
amount of $1,508,025. That is calculat
ed to lay the rails and sidings for the road
from Cincinnati to tbe head of the Se
quatchie valley, three fourths of the en
tire distance, or within about eighty miles
of Chattauooga.
The Adjutant General of the army
reports that incomplete retarne from va*
rioas States show the number organised
malitia to .be 84,724, and the number of
available for malitia duty, but not
organized, to bo 8,701,977. Twelve of
the Staten, Delaware, Virginia, West Vir
ginia, New Hampshire,Georgia, Alabama,
Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan, Wiscon
sin, Nebraska and Nevada have either no
enrollment or heve failed to make refturna.
—There were four entries in the fat
men's race in the Hippodrome
Thursday evening, the puraee being
$50, $25 end $10 for the beet
two out of three heats, weight
of contestants varying from 250 to 256
pounds. Daniel McCarthy, 256 pounds,
won the first purse of $50. MoNenure,
who mado the first heet in 89} seconds,
won %he second parse of $25, the last
purse of $10 going to J. F. Harper.
Three of the persons who robbed tbe
Adams Express Company of a safe, vari
ously estimated as containing from thirty-
seven thousand to five hundred and twen
ty thousand in bonds, of wbioh two thou
sand were in greeubeoks, have been
arrested, end are now confined in tbe 15th
preoinct station house, New York. Other
arrests are expected, end the name of the
persons are withheld.
The late freshet on Long Island did
great damage on the north end of the
Island. Tbe grist mill of Robert Francis
was completely destroyed. Wednesday
night the dam bunted, and sudden tor
rents of water completely destroyed tbe
mill and everything in it. Loos estima
ted et $10,000.
—The Bolters and Democrats were ne
gotiating, st Milwsnkee, Wisoonsin, Fri
day. Ramsey's defeat was conoeded.
—Votes were scattered among eighteen
candidates for U. S. Senator in the Flor
ida Legislature Friday.
—Reflations were introdueed in the
North Caroline House Friday, thanking
John Y. Brown for his manly defense of
Southern people and donnnoiating But
ler.
■Dr. Lighton Coleman declines the
Episcopal Bishopric of the Northern Wis
consin diocese.

tendent; W. C. Morrill, Secretary and
Treasurer. The Herald says that the re-
port shows that while the road has done
more business, it has made less money by
a hundred thousand dollars than last year
tnd less by two hundred end fifty thous
and dollars than in 1872.
—Tha Lumpkin Independent learns
from persons visiting iu tne western part
of Stewart county, that owing to a recent
exodns of freedmen there is considerabls
demand for hands on the river planta
tions. Western “emigrant agents" have
deluded upwards of a hundred hands from
this county into going out Wrst. They
gathered them up iu and around Colum
bus and Eufaula, and many left with the
crowd without having thought of the
queation a moment.
—At Augusta, ou Tuesday, fifty share*
of Stonewall Iron Company (Hituated
near Rome) sold at forty cents per share,
and fourteen sharee of Planters' Loan and
Savings Bank stock at $7 75 end $8 25
per share.
—The Dsblonega Signal of the 6th
says that the losses in the mining regions
by the late freshet were greater than first
reported. Tbe Crisson gold mill is a
complete wreck, and its cost was about
eight thousaud dollars. Other mining
interests suffered, but not so severely.
—Judge Tompkins has ordered the re
lease of Tunis G. Campbell on bail until
he can have a new trial.
—The Savannah Adcertieer says that
Mr. Or H. Kelly, of its city, has a copy
of the “Mysteries of tbe Court of Lon
don," for which, it is said, a toward of
£1,000 has been offered.
—We learn from the Herald that the
lessees of the Western and Atlantio rail
road at their 'meeting on Thursday, sub
scribed $10,000 to the capital stock of
the Atlanta Cotton Factory.
—Special dispatch from Milledgeville,
5th, to the Atlanta Herald: William
Garrett, a large and suooeHKful planter of
Putnam oounty, was shot and killed at
Deonis Station, twelve miles from here,
on yesterday. Some mihundetatandin^
and words between Garrett and a man
named Bradfield caused B<adfield*s son to
draw and fire seven times at Garrett, six
balls entering his body.

of Marion, the finest in Perry oounty, was
destroyed by fire last Friday night. It

General Williams uppjured before the se

no correspondence with Governor Hous
ton, but sent troops to Alabama upon in<

—Gnillanrao Guizot has oAoially offer
ed to M. Rouber, representative of the
Empress Eogeuie, 96,000f. iu payment of
his “debt" to tbe late Emperor; but tbe
money has been declined.
—M. Francis Guerin has arrived at
Paris from the Cape of Good Hope, with
a diamond which he found in an abtRdon-
ed mine at Devil’s Table. This diamond
is estimated worth 7,000,00Qf., but tbe
possessor has not yet found a customar.
—Mile. Rosalie Colton, of Epinel,
France, wants her beloved country to
hand over to her 100,000,000/., or $20,-
<100,0 o. She claims this as the heir of
Jean Thierry, who died 200 years ago.
Jean was the son of a shoemaker and ran
away from home. He acquired a fortune
and died at Venice, leaving his money to
his heirs in Franoe. In tbe meantime his
property was in the custody of the Bank
of Venice. It was difficult to determine,
in the number of claimants, who were tbe
heirs, and this doubt had not been solved
when Bonaparte seized the tresauro of
ibe rich city, Thierry’s fortune with the
rest. By that set, it is claimed, tbe
French nation beoame responsible to
Thierry’s heirs.
—Cuba’s sugar crop is estimated st 1,-
600,000,000 pounds.

—Mr. W. A. Quinn, a Representative
from Wilkes oounty, had his left foot
oaught between the bumpers of two
freight cars in Atlanta, on Friday, and
badly crushed, but it is probable that am
putation will not be necessary.
—Mr. William R. Brown, a prominent
and public spirited citizen, who lately
moved from Houston county to Maoon,
died in that oity on Thursday, of pneu
monia.
—A fire in Macon on Friday morning
consumed all tbe wood work of a two-
story brick house on Fifth street, owned
by Kira. Emma W. Ellis. It was unnoo-
cupied at the time of the burning, and
the fire must have been tbe work of en
inoendinry.
—Iu the City Court of Savannah, on
Wednesday, P. J. Burns excused himself
from serving na a juror ou the plea that
he was not a citizen of the State or of tbe
United States ; but having admitted that
he voted at the last election, a criminal
prosecution ng-iinst him is threatened.
—The Atlanta papers report that Wal
ter Perry, the renting agent of Col. G.
W. Adair, disappeared on Wednesday
morning, and an examination of his ac
counts aod papers showed that ha had
failed to aocount for, about $3,000 col
lected for rents. He left a note saying
that he had gone to Chattanooga to see

of a Vicksburg woman, a writer on the
Petersburg (Va.) Index remarks: “That
looks like a pretty free use of the naroot-
io, but we know even a more excossive
use of the deadly drug. A lady of this
State who died some years ago left be
hind two floor barrels filled with morphia
bottlee. It was calculated by her hus
band that her indulgence coat him ten
thousand dollars through the several
years during which her vitality remitted
and survived its effeots.
