DADEVILLE—$400 OOLD RUBBER!.
Dadbvillb, Ala., Feb. 16, 1875.
Yonr correspondent after spending teat
Sunday and yesterday noder the hospita

thriving city of Alexander, arrived here
this morning, in lime for an elegant
breakfast at the hotel at whioh I am now
■topping, kept by that popular caterer
George Collins, Esq.
Alexander City is rapidly growing, and
will, it it continues, be quite n place in n
year or so. New and large storehouses
are being bnilt filled with every olaas of
goode. Steam saw-mills in and adjaoent
to the place add largely to the commercial
interests of the town and anrronnding
country. Fifteen hundred or two thous
and bales of cotlon have been ibipped no
far during the season from tham.
The annual ball.of the Firemen's Asso
ciation comes off at the eonrt house in
this plaoe on the 26th inst., and from the
9 operations sad interest manifested in
it, we think it will be s grand affair. I am
indebted to several parlies for invitations.
An important arrival was annonnoad at
Jhe jail in this plaoe this afternoon; and
the writer iu oonversation with the Depu
ty Sheriff, who brought the prisoner here,
gleaned the following faots:
On the 15tU of last month Ur. J. U.
Evans, of this eonnty, living near Tallas-
■ee, was robbed of four hundred dollars
in gold by a nsgro named Allan Oilbart,
who, with the aid of a confederate, en
tered Mr. Evans’ house in the day time
and took from a trunk the above amount,
the aooumulated asvinga of year* of bard
labor. I am glad to state, however, that
tbe> have been doteoted, and now lie in
tbe pnblio hotel of ths county to await
their trial. Only forty dollars of tbe
moned has been recovered. T. J. L.

BTATE CONVENTIONS
THBT ABE NOT FAYOBED BY DEMOCRATIC
CONGRESSMEN.
Washington, February 18.—There have
been general consultations of late among
Democrats iu both bouses upon tbe expo*
dieucy ef Southern States calling convi n-
tions to change their constitutions, aud
it has been agieed, with much unanimity
to discountenance Bach conventions.
Tbe question first came from Georgia
some weeks since, nud Fenutor Gordon
wrote strongly fteprooutiug tbe movement.
Not loug since there was a conference at
Raleigh of a number of the most promi
nent Conservatives in North Carolina,
upon the propriety of calling a conven
tion. The matter was referred to Sena
tor Ransom, and ho cousHlted with
Democrats freely in both Houses,
and wrote back that tba entire body of
Conservatives here were opposed to tbe
holding of anch conventions now, in any
part of tbe South. Within a few days
ths Texas Legislature has consulted the
delegation of thut State here apon the
same Si bjact. There was a reply sent
to-day, signed by the whole delegation,
urging that no step be taken to' call r
convention. Tbe objects of these con
ventions, as stated to ths Southern mem
bers here, was not to change those por
tions of tbe constitutions relating to ques
tions of tba present Government, or those
growing ont of the war, but tbe replies,
in all case 1 *, wore that no metier what
the reasons were, it wns r.ltogetber in
expedient at the present time to call con
stitutional conventions for any purpose
whatever. _
