Washington, Maroh 2.—An amendment
to the tax on ooffee and tea of ten cents
was lost by yeas 6, nays 56.
Mr. Johnston’s amendment, excepting
tobaceo already mannfaetnred from the
operation of the increased tax, was adopt
ed by 28 to 26.
Mr. Johnston then moved to ley the
bill on the table, which was carried by 80
to 29.
Adjourned at 12:30 a. m.
The Foroe bill was read in tha Senate a
second time by title, bnt objection wee
made to a third reading and it was laid
over.
The credentials of Maxy, of Texas,
were presented.
Logsn, oalled np tha bill to equalise
bounties. It was passed by tha oaating
vote of Vioe President Wilson.
It was olaimod during the discussion
that it takes not less than thirty, or more
than one hundred millions from tha
Treasury.
The River and Harbor Bill was reported
withont amendment or recommendation,
and plaoed on the oalendar.
The political diaabilitiea of Charles H.
Smith, of Virginia, and Bobert H. Ander
son, of Georgia, were removed.
The Senate is in session to-night on
the tax bill, which was taken from tha ta
ble.
HOUSE.
The bill regulating taxes in the District
of Colombia was passed. The tax is one
aod a half per cent. Church property,
actually used for churoh purposes, is
exempt.
Mr. E. U. Hoar, of Massaohnaatte, from
the soloct committee to inquire whether
the privileges of the House had been
violated by the arrest of Whitelaw
lieid, a witness before a commit
tee of tho Honse, at tha inatanee of
Alexander A. Shepherd,snbmitted a report
and recommended the passage of a bill
decaring witnesses, before either branoh
of Congress, or committee thereof, not
subject to the service of any olvil process,
or any claims or cause of action arising
prior to such appearanoe, while ooming
to Washington, or while in enoh attend
anoe, or until after a reasonable time to
return.
The rules were suspended and tha bill
passed by 131 to 33.

Wasaieoton, Maroh' 2.— Fall cabinet
met this afternoon and adjourned at one
o'oloek, when they went to the oepitol in
a body and made personal appeals in be
half of tha tariff.
The Star says: “The President, with
several members of the Cabinet, includ
ing Secretary Bristow and Bobason and
Attorney General Williams, was at the
eapitol to-day, and while there had a oon-
feronoe with the leading Bepublioan
Senators relative to the tax bill, laid on
the table yesterday.
‘The President and members of the
Cabinet present urged the imperative ne
cessity of taking the bill from the table
and paaeing it, and, it is understood, re
ceived tha aaenranoe that an effort in that
direction wonld be made.”

The Memphis Km press Robbery.
Memphis, March 2.—Ed. Johnson, alias
Prootor, alias Prake, leader of the party
who robbed Brady, Southern Express
messenger of this city, four weeks ego,
was captured at Cape Girardeau on Sat
urday night, by a deteotive, and brought
here Monday. Johnson bos already been
iodioted by the grand jury, and as his of-
fenoe is punishable with death, the prob
abilities are that he will hang. Tha de-
taotives first struck his trail at Metropolis,
Illinois, and after following,him over twa
hundred miles, aaenred him aa above sta
ted. Johnson is an old offender, and
served aj term in the Missouri peniten
tiary for robbing the United State* Ex
press Company in St. Louis.

Alexandria, Va., Maroh 2.—In conse-
qnenoa of the Civil Bights bill, and fear
ing trouble, both the principal hotels
here have cancelled their licenses and

Only a Tramp Killed.
Cincinnati March 2.—The Western-
bonnd passenger train broke an axla. A
tramp, who was stealing a ride on the
front postal car, was killed; others un
hurt.

life, and property is not yet known. A

of Commons, Sir M. H. Beaoh, Chief
Secretary for Ireland, introduced a bill

law authorizing tho closing of pnblio
houses, and tho arrest of persona found
out of doors at night in thej proclaimed
district, and removing the restrictions on
newspapers, whioh passed on the first read
