—The Savannah papers quote green
peas in their market at *4 per bushel.
—Two eld ladies, eaoh nparnrd of one
hundred years of age, Mrs. Bradshaw and
Mrs. Smith, have reoently died in Ogle
thorpe oonnty of amall-pox.
—Among tha graduate, at the Baltimore
Collage of Dental Surgery lent week, we
notioe the following Georgians: Joel
Beverly.Ooyle, Charles Luther Moore,
and Samuel Dullard Kambo.
—Tha eolornd Masons of Savannah, who
mode application to Judge Tompkins for
• oharter, wbioh was refused, have de-
oided to take their case to the Supreme
Coart of the Btate.
—The Atlanta Evening Commonwealth,
• apioy little daily, has been forced to
auapend on account of hard times. Col.
Sawyer returns to Borne, bnt it is re
ported that the paper will be started again
by other parties.
—Mm. T. A Hall, of Quitman county
on* night last week spread some yellow
jenamine flowers in her smoke house end
next morning found twelve dead rats on
tha floor. [Uemember that they are
equally poisonous to children.]
—The Quitman Reporter notices that
Mr. Cyrus MoNeill has commenced build
ing on the lot which he purohnsed west
of the Atlantio A Gulf Railroad depot tor
the location of his turpentine distillery.
It nays, Mr. McNeill ia an energetio and
working man, and we expect to see his
ntill in operation in a short time.
—The Snmter Republican states that
Messrs. J. V. Chapman, John B. King,
Thomas Fiokntt and Whit Weet, took,
two days’ huut in Lsn last week, and in
camming up the gams on Tuesday eve
ning, there lay before them the lifeless
forma of two hundred and thirty-four
partridges—all of them killed on the
wing.
—The Ordinary of Oglethorpe county
baa oonoeived the happy idea of turning
the “einb” system to Booount in the pro
motion of matrimony. He offers a uiar-
riage license free to any one getting up a
club of ten applications for license. If
this extraordinary inducement and the
tax on baobelors don’t hurry up the mar-
2 ring business in Ogltlhorpe, the sitas-
on is beyond remedy.
—The Atlanta Coprtitution of Tnesday
says: “We regret to learn that a paiuful
aocident happened to Bt. Bev. Bishop
B«okwith yesterday. As he was riding in
• baggy with Mr. Cook, on their way from
Marietta to this oity, one of the wheels
ran oft and threw them on the ground,
Mr. Cook falling uprfn the bishop and
bruising him painfully. We are glad to
aonounoe that no bones were broken, and
that thongh very painfnl, the hart is not
serious.”
Xhs tot pissed by the Legislature au
thorizing tbs Mayor and Council of Ms-
eon to dispose of vagrants within their
oity, gives them powers which may be
exorcised greatly to the benefit of the
oity. It authorizes the employment at
w6rk on the streets of all persons leading
an idle or vagrant life wilbont visible
of support Have the city author
ities of Columbus tha same power? If
so. would not its exercise greatly promote
the interest of the city anil the security
of the property of its honest people ?
—The Hawkiaeville Dispatch says
there is a bad atate of affairs existing in a
oertain latitade on Gam Swamp. A low
nights ago some person lying in ambush
shot Mr. Ben Moore, who, though
wounded, escaped with his life. In the
aarly part of last year, near the same
place, an innooent and worthy colored
mail while traveling the road was killed
by aome person couoealed in the woods.
It is believed by several that the person
who did this killing was mist Jten in the
man, tha object being to kill Moore.
Some few year* ago Moore killed a man
by the name of Berry Williams. Since
that time Moore has bad a difficulty with
% iqiq by tha name of Warren, and wan
oat by him. Moore eays he knows who
•hot him tha other night, bnt ref nee* to
gi?o any name. In View of this demoral-
lied aUU of affairs it may be well to
tmvfil that road as little as powiblr
SENATE.
Wasuimotow, Maroh 3.—Tha Tariff and
Tax bill passed the Senate after midnight,
withont amendment, by 80 to 29. It
goes to the President to be aigned to-day.
The Bonnty bill goes to the House for
concurrence in amendment. The Gov
ernment is allowed to borrow money to
meet the wants of tha bill. There Is an
other amendment that soldiers shsll not
be charged with bounties paid them by
tbs State, whioh, it is claimed, will swell
the drain on the Treasury fabulously.
The Senate bss been engaged on the
sundry appropriation bill all the morning.
A canvass was msde in tbe Senate this
morning as to tbe feeling of that body
with reference to proceeding with what is
known as tha “Forea bill.” Tha result
was that a majority of the Senate was op
posed to taking it up, ontil all the appro
priation bill* are disposed of, and indeed
so solicitons were Senators to go on with
the latter bills, that they requested Mr.
Morrill to report the sundry civil bill and
waived the usual reading of the Journal.
It is very doubtful now whether the
“Fores bill” will aver be oalled.up.
Tbe Senate was engaged all day on ihe
Sundry Civil Appropriation bill. A large
number of amendments were agreed to
and the hill passed.
The River and Harbor Appropriation
bill was then taken np, and a number of
amendments ^reported by the Committee
on Transportation Routes. Agreed to.
Tbe Senate has been engaged all day
in discussion on the Sundry Civil Appro
priation bill.

appropriation bill whioh has been pre
sented and agreed to contains a partial
restoration of the franking privilege as to
the Congressional Record and other pub-

ports.
The deficiency bill is tinder considera
tion, and there ia a tremendous pressure
of business and consequent disorder and
confusion in the Honse.

passed at a quarter past four.
A resolution of thanks to Blaine aa
Speaker was offered by Potter, of New
York, and unanimously adopted.
