A Magician Pmaalla* London,
From n London Letter.]
For some time past we have been
amused in London by tba presanoe and
ingenuity of two rival oonjurert—Ur.
Lynn and Mr. Mosknlync. They outdid
one another in marvel*, end ere found to
occupy rooms lido by tide at tbs Rgrn-
tisn Hall, io Piccadilly. When one pro-
dond a box trick, the other come ont with
n banket trick. When uno exposed the
Davenport Brothers, the other ridiculed
the pretanejons of Mine Eva Fay. At last,
Dr. Lynn oame out with a clever but
ghastly triok of cutting n man’s hand off.
But Mr. Maskeljne, not to ba Leaton, h»<
ioveutad a mechanical contrivanca, called
Psycho, whioh is a marvel among auto
mata, and already the talk of all London.
Payoho in a human figure restiug on a
square box or osse, literally tilled with
olookwock and elaborate machinery, nod
thin ones, with the dummy flgnre or doll
meting upon it, is plsoed in a glass cylin
der in the oaatre of the ntaga. It ie ab
solutely impossible that a man nan be
oonoaaled under the flgnre to work it, as
was the cane with the onoa celebrated
automatic obeas-player. The box under
Payoho ia extremely email, and complete
ly filled with machinery of an elaborate
kind. Bat at tba command of Mr. Maak-
elyne, Psycho adds figures together, mul
tiplies, subtracts, and performs various
Mtounding feats in mental arithmetia.
He ia also able to tell what oards have
been subtract *d from a pack by several
people in the audience. But the
most marvelous triok performed
by Payoho oonsists of his playing
a hand at whist with three gen
tlemen selected from the audience. When
the oards are dealt, Psycho’s oards are ar
ranged in front of him on a semi-ciroular
frame. The cards played ere ealled out
by Mr. Maskelyne, and, when Psycho's
tom cornea lo play, the figure looks wise,
turns his heed, put ont his hind, and se
lect* the necessary oard. He play* an
exsslient game, never revokes or mekM a
mistake, and the feat is rewarded with the
most unbounded applanae. Mechanicians
am wild about the discovery, whioh re
fleets great oredit on th* ingenious skill
of the inventor. Payoho Was first intro
duced down at Sandringham, by express
order and command of H. B. H. tba
Prinoe of Walaa, who, by tha way, waa
prevented from paying his first viait to
Mr. Irving'a Hamlet at the Lyceum last
evening, owing to the sed and various
illneas of Ms youngar brother, th# Prinoa
Leopold.
