VALIANT SIBVIOE IN NSW ENGLAND—THEY
UMOVE PREJUDICES OF THE PEOPLE
AGAINST THE SOUTH—NOETHBEN
SOLDIXBa WARMLY OBBET
OOBDON.
Washington, Msreh 11.—Senator Gor
don, of Georgia, ud BepreMntative
Lamar, of Missisaippi, have returned
from New Hampshire.
The Boston Herald (Independent Re
publican) Rays editorially: The apeeohae
made by Messrs. Gordon end Lamar in
New Hampshire oannot feil to do good.
The Southern question has been dis
missed too exclusively ia the North by
Northern men. We welcome to New
England such representative Southern
men as Messrs. Gordon and Lamar.
They speak the sentiments of the intelli
gent white citizens of the South. Their
evidenoe should quiet the apprehensions
of the North, that if the Southern States
are allowed to govern themselves, thdy
will in some way deprive the colored peo
ple of their politiosl rights, if they do not
eommand them to slavery. These gefitle-
men tell the people of New Hampshire
that the tnrbnlenoe of the South oomes
entirely from a corrupt government, ud
that the politiosl rights of the negro ou
never be taken away from him, ud that
to talk of a new rebellion is absnrd.
Northern men have been going
through New Hampshire preaohing the
danger of another rebellion, and the re
version of the results of the war iu rela
tion to the negro.
Those who listened to Messrs. Gordon
and Lamar cannot fail to bs satisfied.
Wbst they want is looal self-government.
It should not be a party question, How
long oan we kaep States wrong side up
by Federal bayonets ?
We wish that Messrs. Gordon ud La
mar could extend their travels and speech
es In New England, and without uy party
trammels whatever, they oould do aneh
to oonvinee our people that the time had
oome to secure local government in the
South, and that we are preparing a chalice
that will surely sooner or later be pressed
to our lips. The question is vital to os,
as well at to the Booth. We oannol sus
tain ftee institutions in one seotioa, rfbile
trampling them down in another. We
must maintain liberty for all, or submit
to a despotism whieh will deny the rights
alike to all.
FEDERAL SOLDIERS AND GORDON.
Concord, March 11.—After Senator
Gordon had finished his speech last night
many Federal soldiers who had foaght
against him oame upon the stage ud

The footings of these towns are as fol
lows :
Two hundred aud fifty-nine towns aad
wards give Cheney (Bep.) 38,771; Rob
erts (Dem.) 38,688; Whits (Temperance)
and aoattering, G78. The same towna
laat year gave MeCntebins (Bep ) 33,860;
Weston (Dem.) 85,205; Blackmar (Tem

pnblioan net gain is 2,827, and Cheney’s
minority is 695.
The towns yet to be heard from gave
last year MoCutohins (Bep.) 28t; Wes
ton (Dem.) 313; scattering, 7. Adding
last yaar’s vote in these towns makes tha
Bepnblicu net gain 2,788, ud Cheney’s
minority 634.
The footings from the First Congres
sional District elect Jones (Dem.) by 472
plurality; Bell (Dem.), in the Seoond
District, by 154 plurality; and Blair
(Bep.), in the Third Diatriet, by 736 plu
rality.
Estimating the fonr towns iu Casa coun
ty, not returned, to give the same vote as
last yaar, the Bapnblicus have a majori
ty in the Honse, but the exact figures
can't be given. They claim a majority
of from 6 to 12.
The footings of the several Sanatoria)
distriots indioste that they stand five Re
publicans and five Democrats, and two
districts having no ehoioe.
There is no eleotion for Governor, and
it will devolve upon the Legislature,
whieh will doubtless eleot Cheney, ths
Bepublioau candidate.
The Democrats claim a majority in the
Couneil, though the distriots have not
been figured sufficiently to determine
finally.
The vote in the State is said to hava
been ths largest evar polled.

SQUABILB ABOUT THEM—THE MACON FOOT-
Washington, March 11.—Thera appears
to Jbe quite a contest going on over the
post mastership At Maoon, Ga. It appears
that some time ago Mr. Belcher, oolored,
was scat bom Augusta, Ga., to be post
master at Mason, aa • representative
oolored man. In the opinion of the De
partment, aad many of tha patrons of the
Maoon offioe, ha was not a good poet-
master, and the Postmaater-Qeneral re
moved him, and appointed Mr. H. S.
Glover, who it appears does not live at
Maoon, but twenty or thirty miles away.
Parties are now trying to induoa tha
Senate net to confirm Glover, because ha
does not live within the delivery and for
other reasons. One of th* reasons given
for the retention of Beloher ia, that h*
ia a oolored man. There ia no prospect
of his retention, but it may lie that un
less the Republicans of Maoon rally to
the support of Mr. Glover, the President
may be compelled to withdraw his name
and aubatitate therefor some of the
other candidates, among whom are Mo-
Barney aud Bond—the latter of whom
was turned out without cause to give Bel
oher the plaoe, on aocouut of the letter
being e oolored man.
The same questions are likely to oome
np with regard to other offioes in the
Booth.
There appears to be two parties in this
fight, and the Postmaster General desires
to gat the bast officer, and is opposed in
some places by parties in interest, olaim-
ing to bs Republicans, because the indi
viduals whom he thinks would make the
best ottoers, they olaint not to be always
the best Republicans.
As there bu been e greet deal of out-
ting of tickets down there, these gentle
men keep away from tha Pcatmaster-Gen-
arsl, and are apparently trying lo induce
the President to listen to their politioal
elaims.
