THE BLACK HILLS.
GOLD AND BILVEB ABUNDANT—THE MINERS
WAITING FOB SPUING.
A oorreepoudeat writing from Yankton,
Dakota, to the World Bays:
TUe curtain arrival of two man in our
city direct from the gold rtgiou of the
Blaok Hill* haa raised a great excitement,
'i'he gold excitement is at fever heat, as
it was last summer und fall, and the
strong confirmation whioo these men give
tu the previous accounts of rich gold dis
coveries now strengthen oar belief that
General Custer did not exaggerate his re
ports. Nothing that has heretofore
reached us from the Black Hills seems so
direotly to sstsblish their oorreotness.
Twenty-five men, rnoetly belonging in
(Sioux City, fitted themselves out with six
teems and plenty of supplies, stole quiet
ly across the Missouri to a rendezvous in
Nebraska, and started in November last
for the Blaok Hills, in serene contempt
of military orders end reservation lines.
After a journey of nearly forty days
through Indian oountry, where, under
Captain Gordon's oommand, they were
ever alert and watohful, they reaohed the
} ;old fields about Christmas, and after
ourneying about awhile, following One
Mr's trail and prospeotiug, they selected a
spot and camped. By January 15th they
had a strong blookade built of ronnd logs,
set four feet in the ground and thirteen
feet high, enolosing a spot eighty feet
square with bastions at tbe corners. They
they th u built quarters and provided for
comfort and safety.
This terrible winter weather has been u
damper on mining, and two military ex
peditions from Fort Bully end Laramie,
sant to arrest and expel them, were
driven baok freezing and etarvieg, after
getting within forty miles of them. Yet
on the 3d of February Gordon and Witch
er set out to fulfil tfieir promise of send
ing baok reports, starting with them small
tough ponies, and in spite of frequent
storms and unparalleled depth’of snow
drifts, they made the whole journey with
out injury. They crossed the Cheyenne
and White rivers, crossed the Nebraska
line near Spotted Tail’s agency, thence to
Niebrara, which led them to the Missouri,
• journey of over three hundred miles.
Their route waB chilly along timbered
creeks, the longest interval without tim
ber being thirty miles. Without tent,
shelter or anything but the inereBt necessa
ries, snch as blankets, warm clothing,
matches, rifle and axe, they got through
with wonderful suooeas. Indiana were
met only onoe, and by pretending to be
only “Bosher's men” banting for cattle
stampeded from the agency, they excited
no snspioion of being ininef* escaping to
tell the world of the mineral
wealth so long hidden. Their ponies got
enough dry grass by pawing in the snow
to aupport life for the whole twenty five
days of privation. Gordon and Witcher go
home to morrow to report progress and
arrange future plans.
Gold has been found in “color quanti
ties inmost of the gulohes they have tried,
and the old miners declare their belief
that their present looation will yield to
eaoh man $20 or $25 per day if worked to

Cubit—Recent Fighting In the Inte
rior.
Havas a, March G.—A telegram from
the commanding General of Santa Clara,
says Brigadier Vergaras’ column yester
day attacked a large body of the inaur-
gents' cavalry at Boqnata farm, and after
an engagement dispersed them. Thirty-
two of the insurgents, mostly negroes,
were killed. Tbe loss of the Spaniards
was seven killed, Major Vargas, of the
Camsjusri Volunteers and six soldiers,
and seventeen wounded. There has also
beon another engagement on the Mora
river, near Guantanamo, where the insur
gents, dressed in the Spanish uniform,
attacked the troops in the rear. An
account of this action received here says
the loss of the insurgents must have
been heavier than that of the Spaniards.
Civil Rights in New Orleans.—Lost
night the unusual spectacle of two ne
groes intruding on heretofore forbidden
grounds, presented itself at tbe St. Charles
Theatre.
These were Senator T. B. Stamps, of
Jefferson, and Dejnle, tbe recently ap
pointed Tax Assessor for the Sixth Dis
trict, and they took their seats under the
left wing of tbe dress circle, in the par
quet to.
Tbeir appearance there wss the oooa-
sion of some comment, bnt they were left
in the quiet enjoyment of the entire wing
in which they remained during the whole
performance —1'icayune, 10th.
The Mobile llegiater says: Mrs. Wil
liam C. Dawson, widow of the late Hon.
William C. Dawson, formerly United
States Senator from Georgia, a highly
popular man, and one whose memory ie
still fondly cherished by the people of
that State, died at Memphis a few days
ago. Her maiden name was Liza M. Per
kins. She was born near Franklin, Wil
liamson county, Tennessee, of parents
who were among the numerous, respecta
ble aud influential people of that Stats.
Either her father, Samut.1 Perkins, or her
uncle, was United States Marshal in 1807,
and the captor of Aaron Burr at Natchez.
MONTGOMERY, ALA.
CIVIL BIGHTS NXOROUS VS. CAL WAONXR.
Montgomkbt, March 12.—Several ne
groes applied at the ticket offloe of the
Theatre lsst night to purehaae tickets of
admission to the parquette, to Cal Wag
ner’s minstrel performance, and were re
fused. Afterwards Deputy U. S. Marshal
Randolph atrested Cal Wagner, upon tha
complaint of four negroes for a violation
of the Civil ltighli bill. A bond of five
hundred dollars was signed for Mr. Wag
ner’s appearance before Commissioner
Demmick this morning, at ten o’oloek.
The negroes who made the application
are notorious politicians, and two of them
were defeated by tbeir own oolor for
county offices at the last eleotion.
Later.—The complaint of four negroes
against Cal Wagner for not admitting
them to his minstrel entertainment was
heaid before United States Commissioner
Dimmick. The defendant's eoonsel moved
to quash the complaint for imperfeotion
in the ootuplaint in various particulars,
and on tbe grouud of tho unconstitution
ality of the Civil Rights bill. Counsel
oited the Slaughter House case and Mrs.
Myra Bradwell's ease.
The United States District Attorney
McAfee, for the complaint, cited the
case of Luther vs. Borden, aud conten
ded that this was a political question.
At 4 p. if. the Commissioner quashed
the compluint, but gave no opinion in the
matter. It is understood that the ne
groes are trying to get up a complaint
that will stick.

Governor Chamberlain, in an interview
with the correspondent of tbe Ntm and
Courier, warmly defeuds the Treasurer,
in whose honesty be reposes unshaken

CONDITION STILL WOBSE COMMISSIONERS
ASK TO BE BELIEVED.
Washington, March 12.—The Freed
man's Bank is iu a worse condition than
heretofore supposed, aud therefore tbe
commissioners (Creswoll, Leipold and
Purvis) have asked to be relieved from
any further responsibility for an account
of (ho ssid trust, provided their bondsmen
may bo released from liabilities after
their retirement, and new commissioners
substituted in their places. They assign,
as an excuse for their action, a failure to
obtain from Congress such legislation as
they deemed essential to the proper and
speedy execution of tho trust reposed in
them.
