AN EXCITING TIME AT FOREST CITY, MO.—A
LENT CONTRIBUTION, AND JUST IN TIME.
From the St. Joseph Gazette, March 2.]
In the Missouri river, directly opposite
Forest Oity, in Holt county, there is b
large island, and in the centre of that
island is a large pond, which, until a few
days since, rested in peueo, undisturbed
by ihe rude alarms of airaiibgresxiug world.
But the cold spell which oaiue down upon
the just and unjust with a zeal never be
fore remembered, put its seal upon the
bosom of the fair lake—which a vulgar
end contaminating people have miscalled
e pond—to the depth of two feet.
There baa never been a thing
sealed up that sotuebdoy didn't want to
burst open to see what was in it, und so
it was in this instance. The is'aud lake,
which had romained inviolate through
time, was visitfd by Joms Lockbridge,
who keeps the Forest City Hotel, and the
seal was broken.
When the ice was removed the space
beneath was found to be literally packed
with Ashes of ull sizes uud description,
from the common cat, weighing forty-five
pounds, to an animated silver not much
larger than a pin. There were Ash with
shovels where their noses should be,sword
Ash, red Ash, black Ash and white Ash,
and Ash of all colors aud degrees. Home
of them hsd scales, and some bad skiiih
like oatAsh, and others yet rejoiced iu a
covering resembling that of the muskrat
—but they wero Ash for all of that.
Then the story Aew all over the country
and people from far aud near came down
upon the island armed with guns, spears,
harpoons aud lauccs, and in all kiud and
manner of vehicles, on liorsoback and on
font. There camo brave men and fair
women, big boys and girls, and smaller
ditto; there, also, could bo soen children
in arms, and all strong in one intent—to
get away with those Ash, for these days
are Lent.
When Adam Kippel came through the
whole air was impregnated with Ash, and
a Ashy atmosphere still clung to his gar
ments as he gave onr reporter the points
of this item— but Adam is a genial soul,
aud this is a labor he delights in.
It is supposed that there must be some
connection with this lake and the Mis
souri river, if not with regions more re
mote and deeper down into the bowels
c.f the earth. Many of the Ash taken from
this plaoo wore of varieties unknown in
thia section of the country, and no one
has yet been found who can class them,or
who had seen those resemblances else
where. All in all, this Ash pond is, in all
■trionsuess, a remarkable discovery, and
one that should be thoroughly looked into.
Adventurer* Will Net Be Allowed
In Ihe Black UIIIb Country.
St. Louis, Maroh 12.—Gen. Sherman
was interviewed ydrterday concerning the
ection the government will take relative
to the gold-hunting expeditions to the
Black Hills country, end that gentleman
said in substance, that expeditions would
be prevented from entering that region,
or if any got in, they would be driven
oat. As soon os the weather will permit,
troops will be put in the Aeld with in
structions to prevent excursions into the
Sioux reservation, and those instructions
will be oarried out by force of arms if
need be. The integrity of the treaty
with the Sioux will be maintained at all
hazards. The Genernl said the frontier
people complain of Indian raids, yet in
this case they do not see tho injustice of
their own act, which is moJeled after the
Indian mode of acquiring property. It
necessary, troops will be sent to bring
