RETURN FROM FLORIDA.
in *
PALATKA, TOCOI—VIA THOMA8VILLE,
VANNAH, MACON. HOME.
Editor« Enquirer-Sun At this sea
son of the year everything looks gay in
Florida. The orange groves are in bloom
—the birds oarol their morning songs
from the dense foliage of the thick woods,
and in the balmy, elastic atmosphere we
breathe along the green banks of her
charming rivers and lakes, we realize a
new existence, full of joy and sweetest
pleasure.
Think of a climate where no frost ha?
fallen daring the entire winter—where
uatare scarcely becomes restive, or vege
tstion ceases to unfold its glorious
charms; where flowers bloom the year
around, and garden vegotablos may bo
oujoyed daily on yonr table, and you oau
form a faint oonoeption of the climato of
the new “Italy of America. ”
What a charm of reality; what a pic
ture of loveliness an orauge tree fall of
golden frait, and claatera of fragrant
blossoms—and yet this is not half that is
seen in Florida.
On oar return we stopped with the Pe
terman Brothers, of the St. Johns House,
Palatka, and although crowded to over
flowing, they found us a resting place for
the night The St. Johns is, indeed, nn
surpassed; but we were sorry to hear of
the illness of Peter Peterman, one of its
estimable proprietors. Ool. Hart and
Hart's Grove are still the great attractions
of Palatke.
This oity is improving rapidly, and yet
it has not readied a third of its growth
Messrs. Rogers & Oo. are prominent in
•hipping and mercantile life, and an ox
oellent house to doal with. They are
soon to ereot a magnificent new house and
wharf.
This time we shipped on the “Diotator,
a spleudid large side-wheel steamer
Charleston), the fastest on the river, and
we oame down to Jacksonville in style.
At “Toooi,” where we oonneot, or rath
er wait for St. Augustine’s train, wo have
half an hpnr for observations. Since the
advent of the Yankee, every oonoeivable
device and agency tiavo been employed to
deooy him oat of his spare shilling, and
well may we exclaim how adroitly this has
been done.
“What do you keep here ?” asks a burly
■on of Now Hampshire. “Canes, alliga
tors and oysters,” replies Floridan. “Any
’gators this morning?” “Sorry to inform
you last one just sold.” “Very nice canes.
What are they made of?” “Palmetto, sir.
“How many can you make a day ?” “Only
three, and it is hard work, at that
“What do you ask?” “One dollar a
piece.” “Well, give mo five."
Looking around on tho banks of whito
■and that glared in his faco, be continue 1:
“What do you live off of here in tho
summer?" “Fish!” “What in the win
ter?” “Yankees!” aud tho crowd broke
up in a laughter.
It mast not be supposed all Northern peo
ple are penurious. 0:i the other hand they
are often profnse in disbursement of thsir
money. Generally -tho wealthy travel
here and they expend an immense amount
daily, averaging flvo to six dollats each.
It may bo safely estimated that one hun
dred and fifty to two huudred thousand
dollars are spent daily in Florida, by
Northern tonrists. You see at once what
such expenditures aggregate even in one
month. And yet the travel is increasing
with the return of each season, aud to
show the drift, a wealthy manufacturer
remarked to ns it had scarcely com
menced. Lot Florida make ample prepa
ration and give good accommodations, and
thousands will go where hundreds visit
her lovely rivers and lakes now.
It is not to be doubted that too maay
highly colored representations have been
published in newspapers and magazines,
creating orroneons impressions concern
ing the State and productions. Florida
has her objections—variations iu temper
ature and many inoonvenienoee, which,
in due time, will be obviated or over
come. The climate and river, wi h its
unmeroos lakes, studded with orauge
groves and cottages, is lovely enough,
withott the nice penoilings of exotic
tonrists.
“What are those strawberries worth?”
enquired a pretty New York girl sitting
near us, of a dusky belle aboard the “Dio
tator.” “Only $2 50.” “Why, for that
little box!” A gentleman from Canada
passes by. “What did yon give for that
box, Colonel?” “Why, Miss, I am ashamed
to tell yon.” “Yon see (tnrniflg to us
she sweetly retorted) that is the way we
aro misled and deeeived. We read iu
these picture books and guide books ol
blooming flowers aud cheap strawberries.”
At Jacksonville we are met by the gen
ial smiles of friends—Dr. Griffin, Mrs.
Gaud, Mrs. liankin, of Columbus Gi.
Taking the express traiu on the J., P.
and M. Hoad, of which that excellent
officer, Col. Robert Walker, is manager,
we arrived in Thomasville next morning,
to spend the Sabbath with Capt. Tripplett
aud other friends. That day we dined
at the “West End House,” kept in excel
lent style by Jim Linton, an excellent fel
low, himself, where we found several
representatives of Macon—Mrs. Hollins-
worth and Miss Snider, “la petite” demoi
selle of fascinating ways and manners.
The horticultural fair, with Tripplett
already submerged in bonqnets of flowers,
eliciting unnsnal comment and iuter-
t. It oocurs 8n tho 1st of May.
We bid adieu to Capt. Geo. Parnell of
the Gulf House, a capital landlord, and
we reach Savannah next morning and
stop at the Marshall, where Jim O’Connel
and Col. Luce are ever ready to wel
come their guest.
The Marshall we found orowded, and
tho tables, too, with every luxury of the
land and sea.
The first inquiry we made was about
Harris’ boy. They say he is a pretty lit
tie fellow—“just like his ma.” We then
ventured in tho'Morning Newt office, np
in the editorial rooms, where we had been
informed a dozen old shot guns awaited ns.
Harris was all alone, hard at work, and
never looked better since his paternal re
lations. Well he has become settled
down to woik. There is nothing like bo-
pa.”
Col. Estill was master of the situation
below, and is vigorously prosecutiug his
plans for tho erection of bis magnifioent
new printing house.
Visiting our friends Col. J. W. Lathrop
A Co., and Duncan, Johnson & Co., we
take the grand old Central, the best, safest
aud most ably managed of Southern rail
roads, at whoso head brains are at work.
Ability like Cols. Rodgers’ and Wadley'i
few men can control; and we reach Ma-
oon in good time, and stop at the Brown
House. J. B. G.

what the President has done to Louisiana,
and giving Senatorial sanction to the
same course.

A Peculiar Interpretation.
[Binghampton (N. Y.) Republican.]
A conductor coming sonth on the Utioa

Rights bill. A o lored man got aboard at
one of the way stations, aud in duo time
was approaohed by the ticket-puncher

prompt reply.
Why not ?” shardly inquired the con-
dnetor.
‘Ease, sah, don’t the civil rights bill

responded the gentloman of color.

Chinese Lkoebdeuain in Cookeby.
The reports of the last annual banquet
of the Chinese residents of Sso Francisco
moke eniertainiug reading. The perfec
tion to whioh the Chinese have carried
their cooking was a matter of surprise to
the American guest present. Daring the
first coarse an orange was laid at the plate
of each guest. The orange itself sosued
like any other orange, but, on being cut
open, was found to contain within the
rind five kinds of delicate jellies. One
was at first puzzled to explain how the
jellies got in, aud, giving up that train
reflection, was in a worse quandary
know how the pulpy part of the orange
got ont. Colored eggs were also served,
in the inside of which were found nuts,
jellies, luests and confectionery. When
a Celestial was asked to explain this leg
erdemain of cookery, he expanded his
month in a hearty laugh and shook his
hosd and chucklingly said: “Melican
men heap smart; why be not findee out
Every luxary of the “Melican man’s mar
ket" was served—turkey, chicken, quail,
goose, dock, pigeons, prairie ohicken,
deer, antelope, and numberless other
game wore served, together with * u “
usual allowance of champagne.

Since the first of the present month the
water at this point has risen nearly
twenty-four feot, and its level is withiu
four feet of extreme high water mark.
1 he river at St. Louis is rising fast, and
another rise is coming down from Pitts

the valleys have causo to feel solicitous,
