SATURDAY JUMRB, 1875.
UKOBUIA HBWB AID VIEWS.
—The proprietors of the Atlente Con
stitution hare goneronsly tonderod to the
oditors end publishers of Georgia an ex
cursion to Toeooa Falla, when the Press
Association meets in Atlanta on the 5th
of July. The Constitution displays its
aoeustomed courtesy and liberality in
this offer, which has been acoopled, on
behalf of tbo Association, by Mr. Estill,
its President. Tbo trip will be a delight
ful one, and we trust that this excursion
will bo such a tempting inducement as to
snouro a full representation of the prose
of the BUte.
—Col. Lewis Tumlin, one of tho most
prominent citizens of North Georgis,
died on Wednesday. He had several
times represented Gwinnett county in
the Legislatnro, of which body he was
one of tho most influential morabers.
—The Constitution says in reforenoe
to the titlo to the Okefinokee Swamp,
that tho opinion of a number of
legal gentlemen interviewed by its
reprosenUtive was unanimously given
that the title had been revested
in the Slate by non-nser. There
can he but little donbt that both the trua-
tees of the Orphan Home, and the Oke-
finokoe and Bt. Mary’s Canal and Drain
age Company havo failed, noglected or
refused to avail themselves of the fran
chises granted them.
—On Wednesday Gov. Smith reoeived
the resignation of T. P. Johnson, Jnstioe
of the Potoe of the 774th District, Mob-
oogeo county.
—Tho roport of the AtlanU papers (re
cently noticed by us) that “Mr. Howard
of Columbus” had hired the BUte con
victs lately at tho Bartow Iron Worka,
and would employ thorn in making turn-
piko roads, was a mistake. The hirer is
Mr. Howard of Deoatur, and he has sent
the convicts to work in his brick yard
near that town.
—The Atlanta Herald thinks that there
is no doolination of a third term in Gen.
Grant’s loiter; that it is, on the contrary,
a formal defenso of the principle that
permits three or four or a dozen terms ;
and is a simple notification to the ofllee-
holding fraternity that they mast not get
ontangled in false allianoes. Correct!
In our judgment, the Federal offloe-hold-
ors will now be moro careful than before
not to say anything against a third torm.
—Tha'Angusts Chronicle, noticing the
announcement of the North Rost Geor
gian that tho two literary societies of
the University of Georgia have invited
oi-Prosident Davis to deliver an address
boforo them at the coming commence
ment, says: “We bopo Mr. Davis will
accept tho invitation iu order that he
may disoover he ia as much beloved in
Georgia as iu Texas. The announcement
of an address from this distinguished
man will draw an immense crowd to
Athons.”
—Edward Nagle, a colored boy, aoci
dentally shot ntid killed auothor boy of
his color, named Johu Davis, near Au
gusts, on Wednesday. Naglo was trying,
with inexperienced linndn, to lot down
the trigger of a musket that ho had
cooked, whon it slipped and exploded the
cap, tho ebargo entering the hoad of
Davia, who was with him.
—We learn from tho Athens Georgian
that a negro lx*y, who throw a reck into
the passenger ca( of the Athens Branch
Railroad on Friday morning last, was
caught by the conductor, who gave his
mother the optiou of whipping him
severely or having him '.prosoentod. The
woman eliosc tho whipping, and divesting
him of Ins clothing, she disciplined tho
young rascal with a hickory switch until
the conductor cried Hold, enough!
A Griflluite, who went to Conyers uu a
picnic lost week, slid passed across tho
track of tho Inst tornado, writes to tho
News: “When in eye’s distance of tho
terrible disaster, wo noticed the leaves on
tho trees tlmt wore spared to stand,
that they wore almost dead—and sp-
proachiug tho scono, wo saw trees in any
number, pilod and lying in any shape
upon each other—it was a sad feeling to
witness tlio disaster. Ileuses of all de
scription were blown down and many
carried away—some have not been ro-
lmilt. Wo noticod ouo largo gin-honsa
that was blown down and torn to pieces,
and oven blow tho cnHting oft’ of tho cog
wheel. The pooplo generally wore very
fortunate, and saved their lives.”
—In the Huperior Court of Chatham
county, on Wednesday, tho jury that went
out in tho oaso of McDowoll, Callahan A
Co. vs. tho Bavannah A Charleston Rail
road, brought in a verdict for plantilTs
for almost tho outiro amount claimed,
$.*>(•,000. The Advertiser says: “This
case, from its magnitude, has oreatod
considerable interest, aud had omployed
on it tho host legal talent of the city, tho
testimony in tho case occupying one en
tire day, tho argument for a second, and
the jury took a third for the vordici.”
Notice of a motion for a new trial wm
given. The suit was for payment for
work in tho construction of the road—the
company claiming that the contractors
had forfeited $-.*>,(MH) by failure to com
ploto the road in tho time specified, and
liud charged for extra work, for wbiob
they were not outitled to pay.
—Comptroller Goldsmith, in reply to
inquiries by tho Tax Receiver of Troup
county, states that “cotton held over from
lust year is taxable, no matter by whom
held”; also, that watches are taxable, aud
should be included in tho property in tho
oolutuu “value of all other property.”
Mohe Alxiuma Nominations.—The fol
lowing are additional nominations for
delegates to the Constitutional Conven
tion, made by the Doiuoerats of Alabama:
Muduou, Gou. L. P. Wa’kor and Col Wm
Lowe; Randolph, CApt. B. F. Weathers;
Tallapoosa, Capt. .las. D. Meadors; Mor
gan, Cupt. J. W. Jones; Henry, Gen. A. C.
Gordon. Those aro all able aud loading
men, aud most of them men of legislative
experience.
OUR PAPER.
As announced by the oarda published
yesterday, tho ownership of tho ENQUinxit-
Bun has changed bands. The new pro
prietors nnod no introduction to our
readers in Columbus and the surrounding
country. To those at a distance we will
say that thoy are gontlemen raised in this
community “from their youth up,” and
thorongbly identified in feeling and busi
ness interest with the pcoplo of Georgia
and Alabama. Of their ability to oouduot
successfully the enterprise which thoy
have undertaken, no one who known thorn
entertains a doubt. We anticipate with
perfect assurance a long continued pros
perous caroor of the old Enquiusb and its
younger but vigorous associate, tho Bun,
under their ownership and management.
To this end wo solicit tho continued
support of the staunch old friends who
have stood steadfastly by the paper to this
timo (and their namt is legion), as woll
as the return of those who havo boon
estrangod by some articles that have ap
peared in it during the lost two yoars.
The absonco of old friends is always
regretted, evon when mauy new ones
ohesr ns by their smiles and encourage
ment; and our gratification would be
greater if the change of administration
now announced should be the occasion of
the happy re-union of all who have evor
patronizod the Enquiser and Sun.
It is our pnrposo to exert evory
energy to make tho papef worthy of public
patronage and a creditable reprosontativo
of our city and section, and in this un
dertaking we confidently oornt on the
oo-operation and support of tho pooplo
interested in maintaining such a paper in
Columbus.
Wo feel no enmity towards, and make
no war upon any rival ontorpriso. It has
been the fortune of the Enquirer,
during its long existenoo as ouo of the
institutions of Columbus, older than tho
city itself, to woloome many paporn
that might have beoo considered rivals.
We beliovo that it always met them iu a
generous spirit, willingly shared with
them the public favor, and regretted their
fats if they found their entorprisos uuro-
munerative. We believe that Columbus
end the surrounding country can,
evou in these hard times, sup
port two good journals, as it has
done in the past. But of course it
is our chief concern to look after the
interest and sucooss of our own paper,
and this wo shall do to tbo boat of our
ability, making envious war upon no ouo,
and trusting to tho kind apprecia
tion of a liberal and tolorant public that
has so long upheld our hands.
Tub Editors.
Tine Baltimore American is not only
distrustful of tho President's intoutiou
not to accept a uominatiou for a third
term, but it is evidently foarful that lie
may succeed in getting it. The Ameri
can of Tuesday says: “Hero in Mary
land, although four-fifths of tho Repub
licans of the State are opposod to the
third-tenu proposition, it might bo in the
powor of the office-holders to sond a
Maryland delegation to tho next National
Convention iu favor of President Grant’s
reuominalion. Indeed, wo have doubts
whether Collector Hinmiona could net
sond a similar delegation from Massachu
setts. Ho also with all tho Southern
States—they could bo sent solid in favor
of a third term.”
This is a vory reasonable view. But
tho American's suggestion that Gen.
Grout in not awaro of tho power of his
otficu-holders, and ought to get informa
tion on tho subject from Secretary Bris
tow and P. M. General Jewell, is unjoya-
blo. He could no doubt nstoniNh Bris
tow and Jewell by telling thorn nil tlmt
Williams aud Crosswell did hoforo them.
Why have the President’s recent appoint
ments to office heou ho nniforudy
made from the Hiipportors of his “policy,”
to tho exclusion of thoso. Republicans
Who sided with Blaine, Wilson, Ac. ?
MOLD 117 1-D!
Where is it going to before it stops? And
what onuses the spurt reported in our
dispatches of yesterday? It certainly
coaid not have been Gen. Grant’s letter
on the third term, for in the estimation
of men as sagacious as the groat money
brokers, that letter could not be regarded
as changing in any manner the position in
which he stood liefore the country. Ho
is neither any moro nor any less a proba-
blo President for a third torm than ho was
last week. It could hardly have been
any announced Treasury programme,
for tho last one pnhlhhod indicated a
continuanco of tho Secretary’s efforts
to maintain tho value of tho currency.
The monthly financial statement showed
a further reduction in .the public debt and
no material change of the “balances.” Wo
are therefore forced to the conclusion that
the rise reported is duo to tho operations
of the great money gamblers, who thus
ro-attest their power to disturb values,
and to profit by fluctuations hurtful to
•very other interest. As long as thoy can
do this, tbo prospect of an early return to
specie payments must be regarded as
vory precarious.
Pr.anxrs our readers may want to see
tho arguments used in favor of a third
term for Gen. Grant. The Washington
Republican prints a long letter, which it
says is endorsed by “a number of promi
nent Southern Republicans,” which lotter
gives reasons that may bo summarily
stated as follows: That Gon. Grant is
five years yonngor than tho youngest of
all his predecessors who sorved two terms,
and hence their refusal to accept a third
torm is not binding on him; that tho
people havo a right to re-elect any man
just os many times as they ploose; that
Grant Is tho only Republican who can be
elected, aud thoreforo it wMl bo simple
madness to throw him over.
Ono of these reasons assumes that a
man, onoo elected President, has an inter
est in or a claim upon the Presidency
qualified only by his age; and another,
that ah Grant is the only Republican who
can bo elooted, it is better to do violence
to the traditions and tbo “unwritten law’
of the Republic than to permit the elec
tion of a man of any other pprty. We are
oonviucod that the lotter was writton by a
“Southern Republican,” for its argument
just about rises to the level of the states
manship of tbo Radicals of this section.
The Tuskogoo News calls our attention
to a mistake which we made tho othor
day in locating tho “Alabama Conference
Female College” at Auburn. It is at
Tuskegee, which, though not the “lovo-
liost village of the plaiu,” is certainly the
prettiest little city of the hilltop that we
oversaw. Onr mistuko arose from our
thiukiug that the Fotnulo Seminary at
Tuskogoo was still*Cullod the East Ala
bama Female College. Our memories of
Tuskogoo are old-time, but pleasant.
Tuk Now Orleans Picayune of the 20th
says: “Tho prospocts aro favorable for
auothor prosperous year for those en
gaged in tho cultivation of tho cane in
Louisiana. The stand is on tho whole
very satisfactory. Tho stubblo cano
came out better than for many years
past, and tbo plant cano has also come up
protty woll as a general rulo.”
A proposition to abolish imprisonment
for debt has just boon rejected by tho
Constitutional Convention of Missouri.

w. aro glad to learn tlmt the Governor
of Texas has replied in a propor manner
to tho very peevish letter of tbo Secretary
of War, which wo notieod tho othor day,
and that Texas will protoct her own fron
tier if tho Federal Government refnses to
do it. A special of tho 31st from Hous
ton to the Galveston Ncics says: “The
Goreruor will, on information of tho facts,
suitably reply to the dispatch of tho Sec
retary of War iu rotation to the prosecu
tion of Gon. Hatch aud Lieut. French for
burglary and theft from a house in Starr
oounty, and against Gen. Hatoh for falso
imprisonment, and three uegro soldiers
for rnurdor in tho samo county, lie has
again laid* before the Frosideut a state
ment of tho condition of tho frontier, and
applied for adequate protection. Failing
in this, he ia propored to amply protect
onr frontier interests against Mexican in
vaders, and the rights of Mexican citziona
against lawless aggression.”
Tn* Peace or Eunori. — In
nounoing in the Uoiiro of Lords, on Mon
day, that Great Britain, supported by
Russia, had intervened in a friendly
manner to prevent a war between Ger
many and France, the Earl of Derby said
that “tho causes of dispute wero liable to
recur,” aud therefore it wes not desirable,
in the interests of peace, to give publicity
to the details of the controversy. Ho
stated, however, that the German Gov
ernment was alarmed at the warlike pre
parations of France, and might have
made a demand for the discontinuance
of her armsmeut, had not France imme
mediately disolaiiued all warliko inten
tions. He did not aay whether Frauee
had agreed to reduco her military force,
or whothor Germany had agreed to re
dnee hero in a corresponding ratio. No
doubt the balauce of Europe fouls more
alarm about Germany’s military power
than about Franoe's.
