From tk. Beormm.nto (U.l.) Union.]
Whether it is n naturni rnsolt of ohani-
pngne ntmoaph.ro, nod atrawberriee nil
the year ronud, ve know not, bat it has
become evident tbnt there is something
in the air, in the noil, or in the social
condition, of Ban Fr.noi.oo, which in
spire. the women of that sea-girt penin
aula with a perennial yearning to kill
lawyer*. The number of lawyers who
have been shot, or shot at, by females in
Bui Francisco is really appalling. Crit
tenden, McDermott, Cobb, are among
the most prominent oases; but the oaten
dor indeed abounds with them; and now
.behold an attempt to take off W. H. L.
(James, in the abrupt and explosive man-
mar whioh seema to be the chosen method
•of launching gen.lemon of his profession
•on their dubious voyage of exploration to
'“the other shore.” We submit that, in
consideration of tbo frequency of these
peculiar attempts at what may be oalled
“class homicide,” it would be idle to pay
■naoh attention to tbe details of each case.
It is evidant that these are phenomena
illustrating * law of nature not hitherto
recognized or classified. Whether the
occurrences are due to the particular
inquiry of the Ban Francisco lawyers, as
a body, or to the particularly harrowiog
and exasperating nature of the domeatio
litigation whioh they conduct, -remain, to
be anoertained, It may, however, help
the inquiry to note that there ia no np.
parent limitatiou of age or previous con
dition in these ooonrrencos, bat that old
women attack young lawyers, and yonnf
women murder old lawyers, and all sorts o:
women preoipitate themselves upon all
sorts of lawyers, ns if there existed a
secret and mysterious propensity in the
femsle breast (as developed coder tbe in.
finance of Ban Francisco fogs and gales)
do bit a lawyer's head whenever seen.

Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.J
Washington, June 3.—Early yesterday
morning a dispatch was received by a
Cabinet officer from Columbus, Ohio, to
(he effect that tbe Republican Convention
•would moke no allusion to the third term.
This was the source of mnoh oongratula
(ion in administration circles. There wes
therefore mnoh disappointment when at
late hoar last night the news cams to the
President that the Ohio Convention had
followed Pennsylvania in patting itself on
the reaord against tbe third term, and had
thus entirely ignored the Presidents letter.
This action of the Ohio Convention has
oonvineed the politicians that the Presi.
dent's letter e.me too late to atop declara
tions against the third term, and it is the
belief that all the Republican Conventions
will declare againat it, just as they wonld
had no letter been issued. The President
was disappointed ( at the aetion of the Ohio
•Convention, sod there is no attempt to
•oonoeal the disappointment upon tbe part
of his friends. He did not say very mnoh
■boat it this morning before he left for
Long Branch, bat it can be assured that
hi. grief will not be inconsolable in tbe
event of Republican defeat, in both Ohio
and Pennsylvania next fall. The Presi.
dent thinks that the party in both of these
States has been weakened by otsling him
off. A oontrary view is oxpressud by
some of tbe most sagacious Republican
politicians of these States. They ssy that
it was an absolute necessity for tbe Re-
pnbliosn party of the States to plant it
self squarely againat tbe third term if it
•xpected to regain any of the power whioh
it has lost.

I taper containing an extract from the
: orthcoming work of Oen. W. T. Sber-
Hy absence delayed the raoelpt of
yonr letter and thia reply to it.
Tho malice that seeks to revive the
nefariously oonoocted and long since 6X
ploded slander which connected my name
with the assassination of President Lin.
ooln, is qaite in ohnnater with the man
who bo conducted his invasion of the
Bontb, as to rander “Sherman’s bum
mers” the synonym of pillage, arson,
ornelty to the helpless, and mnrder of
non-oombataots, and who aloeed his
eareer of arson with a false aocnsslion
against Oen. Hampton in regard to the
bnroing of Colombia, B. O.
Bnt the qneetion arisee, why did Oen.
Sherman at the date of his reported con
versation with Qeneral Jo*. E. Johnston,
suppose me oapabla of oomplieity in tho
assassination of President Liuooln 7
Oeneral Sherman never was peraondly
acquainted with me; and from those who
knew me, either in the United States
army or in oivii life, sorely learned noth
ing to justify suoh suspicion. In tho oou-
duot of the war between the States,
despite of many bassless soonsstions, we
can proudly point to a reoord whioh
shows a strict adherence to the usages ot
ar between aivilized nations. On what,
then, did the suspicion of Gen. Sherman
rest 7 Was it not that, proceeding on
tVe rale of judging others by one's self,
be ascribed to me the murderous and
maliaious trait* of hi* own nature?
He reports a conversation with Presi
dent Linooin, from whioh is to be in
ferred a desire to have authority for de
parting from the oonrse whioh, ns a sol
dier, he most have known was usual and
proper towards prisoners of war. Did he
hope to get instructions for the slaughter
of the Confederacy's President and cabi
net officers, as set forth in the orders of
Col. Dahlgron, when be made his raid
against Richmond 7 If the good-natnred
characteristic reply of President Linooin
taught him that mnrder was not the ap
proved measure, it seems to have failed
to inspire him with tbe generosity acd
oharity whioh are ever found in noble
minds, or with the chivalry which ever
sdornB tho cheracter of the true soldier
and gentlemaD.
Among the artioles of the surrender of
General Jos. E. Johnston, there was one
prohibiting military expeditions in the
oountry east of the Chsttshooohee river.
That was the best consideration obtained
for tbe surrender of armies, arms, moni
tions and manufactories in that section,
and it was in violation of that artiole that
tho brigade of eavalry, by which I was
oaptnreu, was toouriug the ooaotry and
frosty taking from tbe unprotected peo
ple the little whioh waa left to them for
tbeir future subsistence. From the state
ment of General Sherman we learn that
a story bad been told, to tha effect that I
was carrying iu wagons millions of spools
to the South, and therefore we are left to
oouoludo was made that expedition in
violation of the agreement of surrender.
Though the story of the millions of specie
is now admitted by General Bherman to
have been a fiction, the admission is made
in enoh terms as would lead tho reader to
suppose I bad been traveling with wagon
transportation, and had a few thousand
dollars of spools in a valise. Bat neither
supposition would be true. I bad recent
ly joinod the wagon train, und was about
to leave it when captured; my only bag
gage waa a valise, which was packed on a
mule, and it contained no specie. Tho
few thousand dollars of specie were in a
pair of saddle-bags, belonging to Secre
tary Reagan. Whether that money ever
reached the United States treasury, Hr.
Reagan, from whom it was taken, may be
able to learn after be Bhall have easamed
his functions as a representative in the
United Btates tiongroes.
Bhonld the coarse ot tbe oommanding
general of the army, in attempting, at
this late day, to resuscitate a defunot
slander against the President of the late
Confederacy, and to which slander not
even suborned witnesses could givo the
semblance of troth, be taken as the ex
ponent of the feeling of tho army, that
arm of the general government would
seem to be ill-saited to the tank of late
so largoly assigned to it, of preserving
civil order, and of restoring harmony
among the people of the United States.
For public considerations it ia to be
hoped that the ineradicable malignity of
Bherman may be an exoeption to tbe pre-
vafliag sentiments of the United Btates
army.
Again thanking yon for your friendly
consideration, I am very traly yours,
JnraasoN Davis.

Galveston. Jane 8.—In the U. 8. Die-
triot Court yesterday, in the triel of Henry
Greenwald, Jndge Morrill took np the
artiole which appeared in the Neve*, end
commented on it in severe terms an an
attempt to throw the Court into ridionle
and to inform the Jndge of the Court that
decisions were to be disregarded.
Having analysed the artiole, Jndge Hor-
rill remarked that be oould not anffar
Congrats and tho United Btates Co art to
go into oontempt by remaining silent,
and thereby instrneted the Clerk to leant
an order for the United States Marshal to
aommon tha proprietors of tha Galveston
New* to appear and Bhow oanse why snob
an artiole should appear. There is tbe
greatest exoitement prevailing here re
garding this aotion of Jndge Morrill.
GALViaTOH, Jane 8.—In the U. B. Dis
trict Coart Ibis morning, in the esse
agiins{ the proprietors of the Galveston
New*, the attorneys for defendants pre
sented a motion to quash the indiot-
ment on tha following grounds:
First—The Court had no jnriidiotion
in enoh a manner in oontempt, and enoh
prooednre on the part ot tbe Court was
oontrary to all law and the praotise of the
United States.
Second—That, while the proprietors
of the Neve claimed the right end privi
lege to diaotus all questions before the
oonrt in whioh the publio wae interested,
yet in the artiole referred to on the “Law
and Hiohib Law,” no disrespect waa in
tended to the oonrt, as intimated in the
orders of arrest, nor any attempt made
to inflaenoe the oense then pending in
the court nor bring it into disrepute.
Judge W. H. Bollinger, of ooansel for
Rioherdson, Belo A Co., expressed bis de
sire to state the legal points involved, but
Jndge Morrill decided not to bear bim,
saying be wonld take the papers nnder
1 advisement nntil to-morrow. Tha ques
tion in his mind first to be settled wee
whether tbe answer wee anffioient to show
cense why an attachment for oontempt
should not issue. If it waa, farther pro
ceedings would be unnecessary.
The attorney for defenoe in the recent
Civil Rights oaae made a motion for a
new triel before Jndge Woods or Jnstioe
Bradley, of tbe Bnpreme Oonrt. Judge
Morrill took the motion nader considera
tion.
