From New York Herald, Oth.]
Tbs last three months hare been so
productive of goandala against tha clergy
that tba relation of the Ohnreh to the
people hah become a common topio of
thought and conversation. A certain
olaas in tha community baa sailed upon
this moral garbage ahd devoured it with
an appetite singularly suggestive of total
depravity. It is their delight to see oth
ers fall to their own level, and to reiter
ate the alale truism whioh tboy have
mouthed at every opportunity that onr
trusted leaders ara no better than they
should be. Well, it mast be confessed
that these orows have had a hearty meal
of lets, end seem to have attained to
something like aatiety. They have
scented the polluted air from tf.ar,
and had complete enjoyment in the over
throw of a variety of reputations. There
ie another class, however, and not neces
sarily the religious claae alone, bat made
np of all right-minded and honest-hearted
men, to whom the ltpae of reputation on
the part of a beloved teacher is regarded
as a personal calamity. The moral mer
cury drops a faw degrees with erery such
misfortune, and (he entire community is
consoiona of a loss. If a clergyman could
tnmble from his pedestal and simply
break himself to pieoes that would be one
thing; bat since be cannot totter from
his uncertain position and fall to infamy
withont dragging others with him, and
withoot, to a certain extent, paralyzing
public opinion, that Uquito another thing.
As his piaoa is one of very large inflaeife
he oennot disgrace it withont eMeoting me
general faith of the people.
A ministe^snd a woman sis judged by
the seme rales. Their robes most be
perfectly white, withont spot or blemish,
or thoy are Irredeemably lost. The mau
of business may stumble and recover
bimkelf ; his neighbors and friends sim
ply look on and langh at hia awkwardness.
He may even fall to tba ground with im
punity and soil himself from head to
foot. The kindly oiBoea of all are ten
dered, and be is gently lifted to bis feet
again and reoelved Into tba beat society,
and encouraged to ask for the hand and
tortnna of the purest woman of his uo-
qosintanoo. He looks baok on Ihe aea-
aon of his folly and weakness withont any
particular compunction, of eonacienes,
and sometimes counts his victories,
with the oomplacent pride with whioh an
Indian exhibits the aealps whioh attest
hia proweaa and canning. He not only
•awe hie wild eats in profusion in hia
C ntb, but ousts them on tha wayside at s
er end steadier period without so much
aa a thought of blame or criiioiam or loss
of reputation as the result. Tha world ia
Tera ourioosly constituted. They who
make publio opinion make it capable of
covering the sine and waaknaa “
whioh thoy an themselves aubjaot.
While the man of business, however,
wean a sable suit on whioh an ordinary
spot ia not viatbla, the olergymen wean a
robe of white on whioh the slightest stein
is aeen. Ha ia permitted to fell bnt not
to rise again. If he etninblee bis neigh
bors, instead of laughing and helping
him in the awkward prediramsnt, starts
back with horror and hurl tboir execra
tions at him. Thero ia no mercy in the
publio heart for a clergyman who leads
the life whioh some of hia parisblonen
Would easily excuse in themselves. And
all this la aa it should be. Clergymen
represent in their own penons and lives
the morel ptirltvsnd faith of the Chris
tian religion. Their eermons are appeal*
to the publio to aim at trner things. Tha
era they are pnotioally worthless. Elo
quent words most heve a whits Ufa be
hind them in order to be effective. Lips
may otter sounds which charm tha aer
and are then forgotten; bnt lips which
speak from a oonaseratad and self-deny
ing life are like the thunders whioh make
the earth tremble.
The people are right in demanding
spotless parity in tha persona of their
clergy. While they are merciful when a
grave aooueation ia made they eh >nld re
member that Homan justice is indicative
of ttoiuan strength. If it l>e exonaable
or possible for a man in the ordinary pur
suits of life to drive with a loose rein, it
is neither passible nor excusable for the
clergyman to follow hia example. Lai
the CUuroh be right It everything else la
wrong.
It is u sad feat, however, that the very
olaas of men of whom we demand this
special parity of character are absolutely
surrounded by on investing army of temp
tations. Many women are (imply fools
wherever a minister ie ooneernsd. They
fling themaelveB at the head of a clergy
man with a recklessness whioh ia astoniah-
ing. What there is peontlarly faaoinating
about ministers we have nevar yat been
able to discover. Ae a olaas they ara
scholars with refined testes. That is
something. Withont doubt they ere polite,
kiud-hearied end very useful as reoipisnts
of sll the family seorets, reservoirs, kept
fall of *11 sorts of unpleasant stories which
flow in streamlets from s hundred differ
ent directions. They have, however, no
more graoe of manner than ordinary folk,
bat ere, on the contrary, sometimes un-
eooountably awkward. They are not more
comely than the average North American
oitisen, bnt ere apt to be ragged of fees
and oarewora, as thongh they needed
sympathy, instead of giving it. And yet,
in spite of everything, aa honeybees rush
for s flower garden, so tha ladiaa rash for
the minister. Luoky it is if he ie mar
ried; for if he be e bachelor his life ia
rendered miserable by the snare* that ara
laid for his feet. And, even if he be mar
ried, he is beset, besieged, tormented,
until suicide assumes the shape of a duty
or an immediate neoessity.
We have said that wo have never been
able to discover snything peeulitrly fasci
nating about clergymen, and certainly
this laek of appreciation, if it ia ever
well founded, should be so in the esse of
Mr. Beecher. There is the minister in
his metaphorical surplice, of whioh lb*
whiteness is bespattered with the mud of
years. Vet Mr. Beeober is the most
popular preacher of whom Brooklyn
boasts. He sits in oourt on seoular days
as the defendant in a oaae of adultery,
and on Sunday preaches the Ssored Word,
with nobody to object to the singular
example. In fsot, hie position in oourt
makes him still more attractive in the
pnlpit. This ia one of the anomalies of
popular Christianity, and wa do not
pretend to criticise it. It is no doubt per
fectly consistent with Mr. Beecher's faith
in hia own moral condition that ba ahonld
oontinue to preach now aa he hat dons
for forty years, and oertainly if he had
ceaeed to exercise hie scored fa actions
daring the last Are months hnmanity
wonld hare been the sufferer. Boppoeing
that Mr. Beecher oonverte bnt one sonl e
month, whioh ia a moderate estimate for
a man of bis ability, hie oontinnanoe in
the pnlpit has resulted in the saving
of five human beings. Neverthe
less, as a general rale, Hr. Beecher ex
cepted, duty ia plain. Not evan one of
the tribe of Levi conld serve in' the
tabernaele unless be passed a thorough
examination physioally, morally and spir
itually, and was pronounced withont spot
or blemish. We cannot be too careful of
onr ministry, or too rigid in onr demand
that they oome up to the proper elan-
dead in every reRpeot. The altar should

New Took, Jane 10.—Captain Cooper,
of the steamer State of Georgia, whioh
arrived here this morning, make* the fol

46 degrees 84 minutes North, longitode
47 degree* 88 minutes West, had light
breezes from northwest and hazy weather.
There were various ioe bergs and a large
quantity of floe ioe in sight. At 11;80
this morning discovered a ship’s boat,
with sails set on port bow. I
made immediately for her, and she
proved to be boat No. 1 of
tb* steamer Vioksburg, of Liverpool,
belonging to the Dominion Line, and
commanded by Oapt. Bennett. There
were five men in her, and in a very ex
hausted state. Their feet and legs were
very muoh swollen, and so muoh ao that
their boots had to be eat from their feet.
I at onoa took them, with their boat, on
board, and pnt the men into the hospital,
under a Burgeon's ohargs. They are

Tuesday, June 1st. The osptaln ordered
the forward wells to be sounded and six
inohn of water was found. Tha aft
steerage then being foil of water, the
main hold wells were then sounded, and
five and a half feet water found.
The captain railed me on the bridge

to have no fears, as he oould take the

was then discovered that the fires in the
engine-room were drowned ont. The
captain then gave orders to launoh the
boats, with their respective erews, end
told them to mind that the distance from
St. John's was 120 miles to the North
west.
I proceeded to launoh No. 1, which was
my boat, and it was capsized in lowering,

G. B. Airy, the Astronomer Boyal, has
reoeived from the Frenoh observers of
the transit of Vends the first results of
their calculation of the angle of parallax,
making it 8,879 seconds. This corres
ponds to a solar distance of 92,100,000
miles in round nnmbers. No particular
dependence ran be plaoed on this result
(whioh ia also oerried only to three deci
mal places); the object of eo msoy posts
of observation of the transit being to
•elect the corresponding of independent
observations, the variance of whioh, it is
hoped, will be on this oerasion very slight.
The calculations of Enoka, based on
the transit of 1769, mads the earth’s solar
dislsnoe 95,360,000 miles, the perallaotio
angle being 8,577,116 seeonds. Tbetwss
the aocepted distance in the text book of
fifteen years ago. Astronomers got to be
dissatisfied with it, and with the help of
later observations ont it down to 92,666,-

last two years seme rebellion sa yst too
high a figure. One of the immediate ef
