Those who do not care a dollar's worth

think a prisoner guilty of a small offense;
flity dollars indneod him to bolievo ho

lars that ho was n villain and deserved
hanging; five hundred dollars, that he
was a scoundrel of tho deepost dye, and
hanging wan too good for him ; one thous

been tho fag onda of ereation from timo
immemorial, that bis grandfather had
perished on tbo Boalluld, after losing a leg
in trying to oaoape from tho penitentiary,
that bia father deservod the sarno fate and
only escaped by Hoeing tho conutry,
that all hla female ancestors wore vile,

AND INFLUENTIAL MEETING.
Tho meeting held in the Superior Court
room was largely attended by prominont
citizens, real eststo owners, bankers,
moneyed men, ministers and others deep
ly interested in the establishment of a
Female College in Columbus.
Two colored oitizons attended, but they
soon went to sleep and swayed gallantly
to and fro until lod ont by Janitor Lowis.
On motion of T. J. Nuckolls, Jndgo
M. J. Crawford was called to tho obair.
Judge C. slated the object of the meet
ing was known to all, and all concur that
Columbus noeds a Feinalo Collogo.
Every interest would he benefited there
by. lie was satisfied that if sufficient
interest was taken, there need be no
difficulty in establishing sncli an institu
tion in our city. IIo had
no girts of his own to
educate, hut had a deep interest
in the community in which ho had lived
for thirty years. Merchants would lie
bonctlttod, real estate advanced, a vast
amount of money Baved, now spent
abroad for education, population increas
ed—all theso would bo tho offsets of
having a Female Cnllcgo in Columbus.
Our schools are all good, Imt jtbis college
would bo of higher grade.
Mr. C. Jl. Richardson was requested to
act as Hocrotnry, on motion of Dr. Flow-
ellon.
Dr. W. W. l-'ltyvollon moved that
committeo of five lie appointed by the
Chair to report business to the meeting
Dr. W. W. Flewellon, G. It. Glenn,
Rev. J. U. McIntosh, Rev. J. II. Nall, T.
J. Nuckolls and Dr. N. J. Bnssoy wore
appointed that oommittec.
Mr. G. Gunhy Jordan stated, for the
Trustoes of the Public Schools, that they
were not in nttondnnco because of impor
tant bnsinosH—this hoiug their regular
annual mcoting for the election of toach-
ors and tho transaction and arrangement
of the affairs of tho schools. They ex
pressed hearty enconragemont in the ob
joct, and wished the movement God
spood. They would aid it to the extent
of their power.
The committeo returned and reported
they had two plans to propose for adop
tion as follows:
rnorosrrioN no. 1.
Tho committee nppointod to recom
mend a suitable place us a basis to bogin
operation for tho establishment of a Fo-
nialo College, rospootfully recommend tbo
issue of houds to ho sold at par, bearing
interest at 7 por cent, per annum, tho
property purebusod to ho held for the re
demption of said bonds.
proposition no. 2.
That a committee of twenty gontlcmen
be appointed to reoeivo subscriptions
from *50 to *500 cash, said subscriptions
to ho taken from citizens of Columbus
and surrounding countios in Georgia and
Alabama.
Judge Williams thought it best before
any plan was adopted to asoortniu whether
a collogo was to be established and the
location.
Mr. Glonn stated he had felt tho pulse
of tho citizons, and it was that the
Ilolmos place (belonging to Mr. 0. G.
Holmes, formorly the Boykin placo,) was
proforablo to any other. Other places
had been mentioned, and ho gave the
popular objections to thorn. It can ho
bonght for *8,000, and $2,000 more
would oroct additional class rooms, pur-
ohase apparatus, ,tn. Start tho institu
tion, and in two years wo will have a col-
lego that will he a prido to tho oity.
New about tho monoy. IIo had had
this schcnio at lioart for twolvo months.
He intended to Miooood if it took tlio
best teu years of his lifo. Many kuow
how hnrd ho had worked to secure tho ob
ject by subscription. It could not lie
done that way. By tho bond plan success
was assured. Already twelvo - liberal
hearted ottizons had agreed to take ouch
*500 of theso bonds and thoy had assured
hi in that eight more would do tho samo.
Ten thousand dollars would pnrehoso
property. Tho interest would cortuinly
ho puid in throo yenrs. Columbus wus
tbo business oonter of a oountry
whoso radius is fifty miles.
Mon do tlieir trading here
and send their girls abroad to bo educat
ed. Why should not Columbus retaiu tho
money Mio now sends nnmially to Staun
ton, Baltimore, Maeou, aud other points.
It is a low ostimnlo that this section pays
for edueation of its dauglitors *75,000 to
*100,000a yoar. Why not koepthis money
here and havo a first-class college of our
own. lie had boon told liy six wealthy
farraara that if Riinh an institution were
erected here, they would romovo to Colum
bus with thoir families, and friends had
reported others with the same intentions.
Why Homo of our pooplo Bond to
Cutlibort. If Columbus enu not
establish colleges whon Forsyth and
Cuthliort can, he would then believe
she had tho dry rot, aud go nway. He
did not helievo snob a thing, lie had
more oonlidence in tho ontorpriBe of our
pooplo. Who can estimate tho value of
Weslyan Female Collogo to Maeou? Tlio
Columbus institution is to ho first
class iu ovory respect. Only No. 1 men
will lie allowed io havo auything to do
with it. Homo may say tho bonds boar
interest at aeven per oent., and in teu
years, if tho oolloge does not pay tho in.
toroat on the bonds, at tho cud of ten
yoars there would bo $7,000 to add to the
*10,000 of houds to ho issued. 'J'lioro
was no foar that iutorost would not bo
paid. The prido of the pc oplo and
the excellence of tho sohool would en
force a large attoudanco. He, aided by
a hoard of five men, he oonld name, to
manage the Unauoes would guarantee tho
payment of iutorost. There was not a
particle of doubt about it. He had con-
fidonoo iu tlio liberality nnd farsighted
ness of Columbus, the pride and spirit
of her pooplo to inspire him with a feel
ing that tha establishment aud success
of tho college wore assured. He was full
of tho subject, and was certain of tbo at
tainment of the object desired.
Ue was greeted with applause,
row!' l'LAN A DOITED.
The question was put aud proposition
No. 1 adopted.
Judge Williams thought they were
going too fast and wan ia the dark. Ue
thought the purpoee wee to determine oa
the establishment end loeethm of an in
stitution.
Dr. Flewellen and others replied that
would be settled by the stockholders. It
oonld not be by this meeting.
Me. O. Gnnby Jordon moved that the
Chair appoint, at hie leisure, a committee
of five to carry into execution tha plan
adopted by thia meeting. Adopted.
This committee ia to aolloit Ihe taking
of bonds, fto. The Chairman mid he
would appoint as soon aa possible.
T. J. Nnekolla suggested that denomi
national inflnenoe be regarded in the ap.
pointmont ot the committee.
Mr. Glenn returned thanks to oitizens
for large attendance.
On motion, as the chairman pat it, the
meeting reeolved, “We will absolutely
have a oollegs.”
On motion adjonrned.

Last ovening, the spaoiona assembly

lovely maidens, happy hearts, merriment
and joy. The danoe was gay and inspir

gladsome strains, and the gay danoe

An elegant oollation waa served.

To the Local Editor of Os Columbus
Enquirer-Bun:
Dsaz Biz : In your paper of the *9th,
among the Local Briefs, I find tbo fol
lowing :
“When the jnry ia the Dtekenon case
waa first polled they stood six guilty and
aix not guilty. The final verdiet waa not
gnUty."
Alao, in yonr Sunday’s lone of the
27th, yon negleetod to givo tbo names of

good character. Among tha number, of

Monday, H. D. Moore, Wm. Ragland, W.
A. Little, A. 0. Kirven, Grigsby E.
Thomas, sr., and Grigsby E. Thomas, jr.
By oonsent of tha State's oouneel (though
not personally present) wore Judge E. H.
Worrill, Judge Marion Bethnne, Messrs.
Thomas A. Brown, W. A. Daniel, Wm.

I am informed by one o( the
jurors that, “When the jnry was
first polled in the Diekenon case,
that they stood nine for eoqnittal
and throa for gnilty. Bat I presume the
pnblio nor tho Courts of the oountry have
any interest in the matter as to how the
jury stood on tho 1st, 2d or 3d ballot, bat
the whole question tamed upon their ver-
diot when thoy had all agreed, which waa
as follows: “We, the jnry, find the de
fendant not gnilty.” Now when a citizen
is aaeailed, eithor in obaracter or person,
heoan vindicate tha same by his own
right arm or by appealing to a jury of his
oonntrymen. In thia case Mr. Diokerson,
aa a law-abiding man, haa left tha whole
qneetion as to hia guilt or innoeeaoe to a
jury of his countrymen. For nine man tha
he has boon ont on bail, and patiently
borne the odium attached to the charge
against him. Ho haa submitted hla per-
sou, bia oharaoter and the foots to a jury
of bis oonntrymen and by their nnani-
mons verdict they have said “not gnilty.”
The Courts aro satisfied. The pnblic ia
satisfied.
Now from my personal knowledge of
yon, Mr. Loot), I can't think you intended
to do Mr. Diokerson any intentional
wrong, bnt that in search of looal items
yon may have heard some one say the
jury stood as you have published it, and
this letter is written solely as'an aot of
justice to Mr. Dickerson, and I have do
doubt you will cheerfully make ike Correc

Mine Pavements.
It ia very probable before another year
haa passed that good pavements will be
Uid the entire length of bosinen Broad
street, and then shopping and prome
nades will he a delight to the lad its.
Tho eity also will be vastly improver*in
morals. Nothing haa ended more B in
duce profanity than the zigzag brick
bats, found in many portion! of tie oity
whiob are oalled pavements. If ia an
awful misnomer. Tho new oowposition
pavement is the hnodsoinogt yd inven
ted. Tho ono laid down in frvut of the
Moreliants and Mechanics lank, three
years ago—tho first laid in Oolambns—
testifies to its durability, "here's not a
break iu it. Ono most oweliont feature
of thia pavement ia that when a block
benomea faulty, it oan b> taken up and
replaced with another.
