Ool. Dttylev, whoanporiutomlsthoengi
ronriug of tho jottien »t the Bonth Posx,
given the following interesting sketch of
tho nitantion:
The Houth rasa, from the head to tho
ImiiVh ontl, west hide, is an bofore stated,
oloveu miles long, with a high water slope
of three inches per mils. When jettiod
beyond tho oroHt of tho bar the Pans will
lie about twelve miles long, with a sur
face slope of 2} inches por milo. At the
eleventh mile, inside the present bar, tbo
water snrfoco will then lie elevated to
abont 2J inches abovo the Gulf lovel, in-
Mead of boing only abont one inoh above,
as now.
The jetties will not, in the least, change
tho level of the water at the hoad of Bonth
Pass, nor lesson the How into it It is in
tended, however, to oxtend spar dikes
ont into the Northeast, and perhaps into
the Southwest Pass, at the bead of the Pass
ca, and this will cut off a part of the ilo
into them anil add to the volnino Hewing
down and through South Fans. The flow
through the lower part of Bonth Paps, and
through tho bar channels when jettiod,
will also lie much increased by the enclos
ure of Urand llayoit, which now diverts
ono-tbird of the water from Bonth Pass,
ntidwny its length. ThtuBayon is to be
closed l>y a dike near its bead.
The new snrvoy of Bonth Pass, just
made by tbo U. H. (Joast Survey Depart
ment, has oatablished the foot that emin
ently favorable conditions for the success
ful application of the jetty system exist
there. The bar is oomposad of a light
sand, quickly sensitive to and • astly acted
upon liy uny increase or concentration of
curreut. The Gulf doopens quickly and
Bhrnptly from the outer crest of the
Imr, and deep water exisU outside all
nrouud—to tuo right and left an well as in
froDt of tho onter bar. The direotion of
the channel to sea, now, is remarkably
Hi might and direct, while the length of
piers or jetties required will be bnt two
and onn-fonrUt miles long—nearly all iu
very shallow wator-—on the east side, and
about nno nnd a half miles long on the
west side. Strong coastwise currents aro
quickly developed by the winds and tidal
swells which swoop across the Pass
month. Tho depth on tho bar now, at
ordinary high tide, with one-third of tbo
How through the Pass lost through Grand
Bayon, anil |wirhape half of tho remainder
to tlie right anil left of the main channel
is from 8j to !l feet.
To my mind, after a careful study of
the whole snbjoet, in connection with a
knowledge of the uniform success of jet-
ties everywhere, the absense of a single
case of failure anywhere, end tho exist
ence of tho remarkably favorably condi
tions at South Pass, the assurance and
conviction of the sueooss of jetties in
giving ns tho much needed deep ohannol
to sea at South Pass is absolute. With
that success will begin a new and proud
ora for New Orleans.

P(iojecttLEs and Abmob.—In that race
for supremacy betwoen shot and armor,
■ which has been going on for twelve years,
and which appears like the instructive
preparation for nn expected event, tho
advantages thus far are on the side of tho
projeotilos. In some recent experiments
made at Berlin, four of Krnpp’s rilled
breech-loading guns, arranged to give a
converging Are, shattered a target com
posed of iron plato 20 inohes thiek. The
gnns had a chargo of 85 pounds of pris-
mntic powder eecb, with cubic projectiles,
and were firod simultaneously by electric
ignition. Of eonme battle firing is a vory
different thing from target prsotiee; but
all tho latest experiments in Prussia and
England go to show that in the wars of
the fntnrc, the best gnns and not the best
armor will insuro victory.

Everything is in mins, not a warehonee

The enuso of tho great catastrophe is
