has only a nose left 7 A noise.
—“Earwrockoneilablo” was the way a
youth of Holloa spelled the word, given
out at a “match” some time ago. Ho be

—“Lord, make ns trnly thankful for
what wo arn nbont to receive—these bis
cuits ain’t rttton for a dog to eat,” is tho
way a certain Monroe, La., man asks a
blessing.
—A Kansas paper says: “A mnlo
klokoil au insurance agent on tho oheok
in that place, the other day. The
agent’s cheek was uninjured, but the
ninlo's hoof was brokon.".
—A bad little boy in Aberdeen, rub
bed cayonno pepper dnat all over tho
baok of his jacket. The aohool-maBter
thrashed him briskly, lint dismissed tho
hctiool immediately, to run to the noarcst
chemist for eyo-wator.
—When John Henry’s wife asked if bIio
might go to a “watering place," he as
sented, and sweotly referred her to the
wash-tub; and now she’s fixing things up
for tho next time. He says, “My dear, I
think I’ll go to the olub a little while."
Hbo thinks he will.
—Au exchange says that whon an Ohio
farmer hires a man he expects him to saw
wood boforo daylight and chnrn after
supper, and if he is a willing hand they
enu generally manage to send him after
tho doctor about midnight, and tarn him
out at three o'clock to soe if ho forgot to
look tho barn doors.
—A certain elork in a Western village
reoently mndo the following oomment on
l'ocahontas. Said he: “Fooahontas was
a groat man; l’ocahontas was a kind-
hourtod and true man.” “Hold on,” cried
bis ohampion ; “Pocahontas was a wo
man." “Bho was, eh 7" said he. “Well,
that's just my lnok. How am I oxpected
to know ? I never read the llible.”
—The jailor of Hartford, Conn , was
rowarded the other day by an enjoyable
demonstration from his prisoners. Tho
spokesman of tho party that waited upon
him, in a voico troinnlons with snpprossod
grntitudo, said : “Mr. Belden, in bohulf
of tbe other inmates of the institution, I
come to thank yon for the improvod
quality of the hash."
—“Whars do use 7” ho said. "Ono o’
you fiddlo-Rtring niggers tell me dat 1 A
nigger can't do dem things liko a white
mail. You all jme a mauevolouce s'ciety

—A pale man with long hair got into
tho car. It was a cold day, and the seal
near the stove was occupied by a man
and an inquisitive-looking boy. Tke|mlo
man backed np to tho stovo and remark
ed : “Man run over just now.” The in-
quisitivo-iooking buy sprang to his feet
and rushed out of tho oar liko a maniac.
Tho pale man settled down in tho vacated
seat and explained : “Ho run over tho
truuk ahead of tho engine; he wasn’t
struck.”
—Tho New York Tribune, oonsoliug
Europe on the death of Hir Christopher
Wron and Michael Angelo, informs her
that onr Mnllott will soon be there, and
thon, in a spirit of admonition and libor-
ality, says: “Receive him, Europe; listen
to him meekly; profit by his remarks, and
take his ‘cussing' kindly. And Europe!
if you want him—there’s nothing moan
nbont the Great Republic—keep him.”
—An old Highlander, rather fond of
his toddy, was orderod by his physioiau,
■luring temporary illness, not to exceed
one onnee of spirits daily. Tbe old gen-
llouion was dubious nbont the amount,
and asked his son, a school boy, how
much nn ounce was. “Hixtoen drachms,"
was tile reply. “Sixteen drams 7 All ex
cellent doctor!" replied the Highlander.
“Run and tell Donald McTarvish and big
John to como down tho nicht.”
—“Got the 'phoby bavo yo? Can’t
swallow any liquid, eh 7” Observed Mrs.
Williss to her husband yestordny, who
had refused water for two dayB, “well,
wo'll soo," and tho good woninu drew the
cork from tbe whiskey bottlo and placed
the nozzle to lior liege's mouth. Wills::’
face emerged from its gloom liko a full
moon from behind a cloud, and glnnciug
nt his wife with a quizzical expression,
ho said: “Coma to think of it, Lovo, I
don't holiovo that dog had any teoth.”
—There is n man in Cnthliert, sixty-
four years old, snysa PoniiNylvnnin paper,
who has not taken a drink of spirits in
over a quarter of a century, never drank
a enp of cofi’co in all Ilia life, nor ato a
pound of moat of any kind. A fow days
since, in ronding a newspaper, ho saw an
advertisement where it was proposed to
furnish a recipe for five dollars which
would toaeli a man how to live on thirty-
five coats por weok. At this proposition
he liecamo indignant, and Bail it was
sheer extravagnneo for a man to spend
that amount, asserting that his provisions
woro not worth ten dollars por year. He
subsists entirely on corn bread and water
—declaring that bo would not exchange
his diet for that of a king or prince. Ilis
clothing costs him about eight dollars per
annum. Ho is a man of family, and we
pity his family.

A Case ov Cheek.—A stylish young
man rooontly slopped at an iun in u
small town in California. Ho oolled for
“the drinks"for all about the place Hovorul
Times, aud waved his hand in a lordly
way to the inn-keoper, as though to say :
“This is luino."
Ho was so agrooablo that they all took
quite a liking to him. Next morning,
after breakfast, he was starting off, when
the inn-koopor apologetically remarked
“That little bill.”
“O, bloss your soul, my friend, I have

“Then why didn't you tell me so bo

“Well, replied the traveler, “if yon

Tbe point was so well taken, that the
