LOOK OUT FOR HIM
A regular 1 ‘dead heat” arrived in the
eity Monday morning last and went di
rectly to the llankin House, where he
registered as “W. Belknap, Mobile, Ala.”
Ho stated to the olerk that be was repre
senting s grocery house in Mobile. On
Monday night be called on the olerk to
oash a oheck on a Mobile bank for $12. r.0,
bnt was informed that a ten dollar bill
was as near as he conld come to it. The
“gent” responded, “Let me have
that, and I'll get it eashed in
the morning.” The aooommodating
clerk let bim have ten dollars and the
gnest went oat and has not yet returned.
Probably he's sleeping a slumber equal to
Hip Van Winkle. Bnt this was not
his only victim. He called npon Mr.
Philip Harris and left bis watch, a very
inferior silver one, for repairs, bnt re
quested that one shonld be loaned bim
until bis was fixed, whioh was done. Mr.
Harris has not yet seen or beard from
him, nor the good watoh loaned. He is
doaoribed as a man of medium height,
light complexion, red aide.wbiBkers.
Look ont for him in sister oities.

The world is becoming sensible. Onr
ladieB will be interested in knowing that
oloUting bss been oonstruoted for health.
Among other novelties of underwear at
Lord A Taylor's “opening,” in New York,
says a letter writer, were some garments
of soft, fine flannel in a peonliar shade of
greon. “Are they medicated ?” we asked
“Not at all," answered Mr. George Lord ;
“still they are of a highly medioinal char
acter, and will enre rheumatism and other
like diseases. They were made from this,”
handing ns a branch of the long-lsaf pine
of Georgia. Hreatbing tbe Bmoks from
a burning resinona root of this tree will
cure oold, oongb, and even consumption,
and why will not wearing garments made
of its leaves prove equally effeotivo?

HARRIS COUNTY.
Hamilton, Ga., Ootober 10, 1877.
Superior Court is now in Session here.
The common law and claim dockets are
finished. No oases of mneb importance
have been decided, the majority having
been continned. The oriminal docket
was taken up to-day. There are nine
prisoners now in the oonuty jail—eight
oolored and one white. Conrt will prob
ably adjourn to-morrow.
The Mnsoogee bar is well represented
here.
A few salesmen from Colnmbns houses
are in Hamilton, among them are Mr. A.
F. Johnston, representing W. L. Tillman
A Co., and Mr. Geo. E. Andrews, from
M. J. Crawford’s grooery honso.
From “Mad. Hnmor” we lesrn there
will be several marriages in this plaee in
a short while, some of tho “daring” ones,
of both sexes have been pointed ont tc ns,
and so far as the female portion is con
cerned, we have seldom, if ever, beheld
snoh splendid speoimena of loveliness,
and the male portion are the very best
sons of Harris. The “Madame” also in
forms ns that there are six aspirants to
seats in the lower house of the General
Assembly.
Hamilton is a very . pretty village and
filled with the “salt of the earth,” so to
speak. The college bnilding, when com
pleted, will add much to tbe hcanty of
this already charming village. Hamilton
is fortnnate in having as good schools,
both male snd female, as are to be found
any where in tbe State.
Onr friend, Col. G. Y. T., visited the

grant bouquet, whose besnty and fresh
ness was only excelled by the fair donor,
but he waB disappointed, as there were
no flowers or fair ones near.
The Enquibeb-Hun is appreciated in
this oounty, and the only difficulty that
yonr correspondent and agent has met
with is that almost every man in tho

HOUSTON THE FIBST OITT—THE MEXICAN
OUTBAOE8—GBOPS LABORS THAN LAST
TEAB EXCEPT COTTON WHIOH IS BHOBT.
From an Ocomiioaal Correspondent.]
Houston, Ootober 8, 1877.
This oity is fast beooming the first of
the State in population, and in fonndriee,
flour mills, railroads, etc. It ie already
ahead of Galveeton, which ie laid to be
the largest oity.
Commodore Morgan ia running a lina
of steamships to within nine milee of
Houston, bringing freight from New
York and other northern oitiee to interior
merchants. His steamers do not stop at
Galveston, bnt steam by and oome up the
Buffalo Bayon to Clinton, and from OUn
ton to Houston. The Commodore
has a railroad, and freight ia
oarried by the Central, Inter'
national, New Orleane, Texas Weetern,
East and West, and San Antonio Bailroads
to all points in Texas; and freight whioh
previonsly came down to Texas by the
M. K. A T. Hoad, whioh enters on the
north side of tbe State, now eomes by
Morgan’s steamships which enter on the
sonthwestern border.
The Mexican question is oreating con
siderable excitement in onr State, et pre
sent. The people are preparing to defend
their lives and property against Mermans
who oross the Bio Grande end murder
oitizens and rob Tillages, and if neawary
war will be deolared at no diatamday.
The National Government ia juat begin
ning to take a hand in the matter. If war
is declared there are from 25,000 to 60,-
000 men in Texas who are ready for
immediate rnaroh on the
Greasers. If the outrages by tbe Mexi
cans are not stopped this army of shoot
40,000 will try to atop them whether the
National Government takes part. These
depredations have bean going on for a
number of years, bnt now a “Demoorat"
is at the head of the Government, and it
is a fixed determination to pnt an end to
them if it takes “all winter."
The cropB of this State are mnoh larger
this than last year, exoept ootton, whioh I
believe is short. Galveston has, previous
to this year, reoeived nearly all the ootton
of the State, but this year Honaton iB do
ing the business. 0. D.

This prize was taken by Hobison Crn-

atndent of onr poetioal school, who oame
to our ancient oity to acquire some of tho
graoes of fashionable life, in order that
he may elivate his own oity in the scale
of refinement and fame, whioh city ac
qnired its name from the faot of there
being a blacksmith shop and watering
tank there, which still, as we are reliably
informed, oonBtitntes two-thirds of tho
town. Still we have groat hopes of the
young villago in the future, especially as
some of tho farmer residents of tho ao
oient city are now domiciled among them
from whioh faot we oxpeot great results
in the future.
In conclusion, I will state that the
President of the Lazy Club is very much

barley having all tamed to rye in one

W. 8. 8., Mayor of the anoient oity,
