Mand Mnller,” mnst take a strong hold
on the hearts of all who may witness the
entertainment, for the play, choioe as a
dramatic work, is representative and pic
turesque. The more olosely the drama is
scrutinized, the more apparent become its
bounties. The characterization is affect
ing, because of the naturalness of its
pathetio expression. It has been said of
Miss ltogers, her voioe end faoe express
tho emotions wbioh sway her mind, and
her aotion is in perfect unison with these
emotions. There iB no exaggeration of
passion, but tho earnestness of spirit,
which pervades the impersonation, gives

LOCAL B KIEFS.
—Weather warm and streets very dnsty.
—Natnre has no taste in oolors. It pnts
red patches on green trees.
—A number of lawyers left yesterday
to attend the Supreme Conrt.
—An English woman, when a tract was
handed to her, replied, “Thank yon, I am
already saved.”
—We noticed yesterday that a track to
the N. A S. Railroad, to rnn to the north
side of tho depot from the engine shed,
was being laid.
—Mr. Jones and family, of Michigan,
are in the city. He intends locating in
the Sontb, and likes ColnmbnB better
than any place he has seen. He is a far
mer. We welcome snoh people to onr
country.

School, in the Northern Liberties, at their
entertainment on Friday night. “He
that giveth to the poor lomleth to the
Lord.” All things will be sold very low.
—“My dear boy,” said a mother to her
son as he handed ronnd his plate for more

the boy, “but that tnrkey peoked at me

ports are 202,375 bales—217,830 less than
last year. The interior towns for that
week reooived 53,738 bales, against 82,940
in 1870, and bad stocks of 41,891 agaiDst
72,277. Visible supply 1,278,300—a de
crease of 557,192 from 1870, and 400,254
from 1876, and 533,788 from 1874.
Tho Chronicle, analysing the reports of
the Cotton Exchanges,concludes that they
indioate an average decrease on last year’s
crop of ten per cent., and indioate a total
orop for 1877-8 of 4,008,350, against
4,485,000 last year.
The Choonicle't weather reports are not

storms In Texas, destructive to the orop.
Memphis is the only point which reports

MARION COUNTY•
Buena Vista, October 17, 1877.
Editor Enquirer-Sun: Yonr corres
pondent, in company with Mr. Jno. P.
Manley, of the firm of 0. A. Rodd A Co.,
left the oity for Bnena Vista on Sunday.
The roads between this oity and Shingle
Hill ore in a good oonditlon. Tho crops,
after leaving Boll creek, ore vory poor
indeed. We noticed many oabina in the
midst of pine thiokets, and no sign of
any land in cnltivation. How the occu
pants get a living ia a mystery we oan t
solve.
Abont eight miles from tho oity we
anddenly came npon a ohuroh, crowded
with people anxious to hear tho Gospel
expounded. We failed to learn tho nemo
of the officiating clergyman.
Abont two milos this side of Bed Bono
wo met Mr. John Short, in oompeny with
his estimable lady and charming dangh
tor. Mr. 8. insisted that wo should re
turn with him to his comfortable home.
We did so, and never has it boon onr
good fortune to be received oo hospita
bly by any one. He ia one of the beat of
farmers, and has made o splendid orop of
cotton.
The present term of the oonrt has dis
posed of one old oase. Noil Carter sued
Sarah L. Jernigan, executrix, nine years
ago for recovery of borrowed money, and
it was not finally deoided until last Mon
day. Tho jury fonnd for Carter, the
plaintiff.
Nothing of importanoe on the criminal
docket.
Court will probably adjonrn to-morrow.
Bnena Vista ia a thriving little town,
and ia very mnoh on the temperanoe or
der, there being bnt one bar-room in the
town.
MadBtne Humor tells of many marriages
in the coming month. One yonng lady
will make a Z/aiYe-breadth esoape, if she
escapes at all, whioh ia donbtfnl.
There are many aspirants for seats in
the legislative halls of onr State in the
oonnty.
The Argus ot this morning has this :—
“We learned yesterday that Hon. D. C.
Cody has deolined to allow his name iiHed
as a candidate for the Senate. Our
authority is good, and perhaps the infor
mation will be quite aooeptable to some
aspirants. It is oertainly manly in Mr.
Cody to give way and let the people say
whom they will prefer."
Major E. W. Miller is • candidate for
the Senate. Major is a gentleman of flne
sense and a first-alass lawyer. He is ap
preciated by his oonnty and they will vote
for him to a man.
Col.M. H. Blandford has left for Atlanta
to attend the Snpreme Oonrt. Messrs.
J. M. McNeil and Henry Goetchins, from
yonr city, and Messrs. Tim Willis, J. M.
Matthews and James Worrell, of Talbot-
ton, are here.
Buena Vista ia “obook” fnll of olever
people, and to all who may obanoe to stop,
we say oall on Williams at the hotel, he
feeds “tip top” and lodges yon in the very
best of apartments. P.
