The State tax of Florida ia to be re-

A Nashville oolored preacher in ntiing
a member of his church for the payment
of a subscription to the pastor’s salary.
According to an estimate of the New
York Daily Bulletin, there in now in the
hands of tbo people of the I’nited States
•4.16 ,000,000 in greenbacks and enrrenov.
The population is about 46,000,000, which
gives exactly ten dollars per head.
Han Antonio, Texas, has a society of
Free Thinkers, and a dispatch from there
to the Galveston Aetoi says a band of
fifty Christian Kuklux took a leading Free
Thinker of Bell connty out the other
night, hit him fifty lashes and gave notice
if there were any more infidel lecturers
in that county Homebody would hang.
Aveiiaoe Texas item : Gov. Hubbard,
at the Belton Fair, said Texas is getting
rich at the rate of $100,000,000 per an**
com. The taxable property of the State
is now $.‘150,000,000, against $250,000,-
000 in 1870. This is progress with a vim.
And in 1880 it will bo $700,000,000, three
millions of people and some twenty-odd
members of Congress.
Gov. McCreary, of Kentucky, haH of
fered a roward of $1,000 for the appre
hension of the masked scoundrels who
made the cowardly assault on David Hall
in Franklin county last week. It is to be
hoped that these men will be arrested
and mado to suffer the fnil penalty of the
law. A score or two of conviotious will
be very apt to put a quietus on masked
deviltry.
An Arkansas man who bad an invalid
wife concluded to get rid of hor.
loaded both barrels of a shot gnu and at
tempted to shoot her in bed, but the caps
only* snapped. Then he reversed the
weajH»n and attempted to dash out the
sufferer’s brains. Tbo stook struck the
bed post, the loads wore dischsrged, and
the two charges of shot euterod his lungs.
There were few mourners.
Tub New Havou Palladium says tha*
the iron steamer John Middleton, Gap-
taiu Robinson, arrived there on Monday
evening to load with ammunition for the
Turkish Government. The steamer John
B. Walker, Captain Dunoomb, still lay at
the entrance of the harbor awaiting or
ders. Khe is loaded with 2,150 tons of
ammunition, guns, eto., for tbo same
people, tbo valuo being nearly $2,000,000.
A counterfeit fifty dollar note, pur
porting to be of tho Central National
bank of Now York, has boon dotected.
The engraving, both on the face and back
of tho note, is of vory superior character,
and the only differouce to the observer
between it and tbo gouume note is that
tho oountorfeit is both a trifle narrower
and shorter, and tho paper upon whioh it
is executed is rather thicker, which latter
oironmstance led to its detection.
P*of. Heel ye, of Amherst, has lately
made the excellent suggestion that there
should bo a “college exchange," where
the faculty and students eould meet and
exchange opinions upon live questions.
It is proposed to hold such meetings once
a week. There is throughout good sense
in this idea. Such talks would holp to
brighten tho professors and to cultivate
the man in them as well as the scholar.
Ex-Senator Loo an, who is now in
Washington, says that Wisconsin is more
certain to go Democratic than Now York,
lie is outspoken in his deuuuciatious of
the President's Civil Service order, and
attributes to it wholly the Republican de
feats in Ohio and California, and the
Democratic victories which he predicts in
Wisconsin, Pennsylvania And Massachn
setts. He says the eighty thousand office-
holders are not ouly not working for tho
Republican party, but are rapidly becom
ing Democratic converts, from the con
viction tkiAt the Republican porty is
doomed and their ouly hopes of saving
their official heads is in currying favor
with the Democrats.
The House Committees.—Mr. Randall
has kept his oonnsel well as to his com
mission. Prominent Congressmen who
share his confidence predict tho following
chairmanships, says the Courier-Journal*
special :
Fernando Wood, of Now York, Ways
and Means.
Atkins, of Tennessee, Appropriations.
Banning, of Ohio, Military Affairs.
John Goode, of Yirgiuia, Naval Affairs.
Swsnn, of Msryland, Foreign Affairs.
Buckner, of Missouri, Banking and
Currency.
Gibson, of Louisiana, for Levees.
John M. Regsu, of Texas, for Com
merce.
House, of Tennessee, or Stephens, of
Georgia, for the Pacific Railroad.
A Nobthamiton-hiuk election in Eng
land in the last century cost more than
$500,000 a aide. The poll whs kept open
for weeks, and when the electors had
drank up all the port aud sherry wine at
Lord Northampton's they went to Ix>rd
Halifax’s, who gave them port, aud when
that was all gone, apleudid claret. But
the latter they mistook for sour port, and
swore they would never vole for a fellow
who gave them such stuff, and, to s man,
went over to the other side. This elec
tion sent Lend Northampton abroad
for the rest of hia days, and compelled
Lord Halifax to do e hia cooutry house.
This election haa been supposed to be the
moat costly on record, but a recent pub
lication shows that the greatest splendor
of all on electioneering was that disso
lute of dissolute#, Thomas, Lord Whar
ton, in the reigns of Charles 11 and
^nwea II, who expeuded m that way
p earn equal to ft, 500,000.
KEPI III.M AN THOIIRLEH
The telegrams record that tho Henate
has adjourned to Monday, that the Re
publicans may have an understanding
with Mr. Hayes concerning nominations.
The consultations of the party, it seems,
are not barmomoun. The leaders of the
radical coalition against llayes in the
House are Butler, Frye, Hale, and Town
send of Now Y'ork, with a sprinkling of
Western men whose names are scarcely
known out of their respective districts.
In the Senate almost every Republican is
against him. Frye and Ilale ('“the little
bnb"; are the special servitors of Blaine,
and Coukling hates because his “turkey
gobbler stmt” dignity has not been re
garded properly. Conkling Las that su
perb vanity that looks down on the com
mon Lord, and be deems the whole world
belongs to that class, himself excepted,
*md his vanity imagines all should raise
their eyes in reverence to his. The 4th
of March, 1870, will end his political life,
and when he is gone he will discover that
his absence, though a blessing to the
country, will only be missed in the record
ing of a partisan vote.
The great bone of contention is civil
service reform, the petty hobby of five-
hnndred-dollars-per speech Schurz. The
Southern policy, the Republicans do not
object to so much. They know that is an
accomplished fact, and objections are
futile ; that the work completed can not
be undone, and the Houth, with its thous
ands of neffroen, freed to perpetuate had
ical thraldom, is forever delivered of
Radical rule. The very power by whioh
they hoped to fetter intelligence and
wealth has been turned against them for
their discomfiture. Giving the ballot to
tho blacks was a present to the Democrats
of thirty-seven Congressmen, and votes
in the Electoral College. We wish
there were more to be gained on tho same
terms. Civil service reform is the rock on
which the loving brethren have split.
This means there shall be no more impo-
position of taxes upon the employes of
tho Government for party purposes; that
a clerk in Washington eannot be foroed
to go to any given place to vote, and that
he may cast his ballot for whom he pleas
es; that, provided he does his duty to
the Government, he may retain his post
tion so long as he pleases, and that he is
not At the nod and heok of every Con
gressman, who thinks he can barter off
his veto as he will. It means also that
employes aro not to bo mnloted proportion
ed to tbo salary they rooeive for campaign
funds, and that tho Government employs
mon to do work, and not engineer par
tisan conventions with its money, am
when one is employed in an offloo he
must devote his time aud attention to its
sorvioo and not becomo a political ma
chine. It means, too, promotion for
faithful service; but this feature both
Hayes and Sobnrz have disregarded.
Now, this is that about which tho Repub
licans are disooutentod and quarroling.
They have always obtainod the funds to
carry on campaigns by foroed contribu
tions on officeholders, and ouch Senator
end Representative desires to continue
tho privilege of making appointments
heretofore. They see power slipping
from their grasp. Thoy hoc tho hand
writing on tho waII, and know that the
doom of Republicanism is sealed, and
that the Democratic party, ah tho only
national orgauizatioo, will in a few years
seize tho reins of Government from the
seotionalists, so each is looking out for
himself.
No wonder they are bitter and squall,
and are mad with Hayes, No wonder
they fight off K|H>fford and Eustis, and
may admit Kellogg. The House Repub
licans may voto for the endorsement of
Hayes’ Southern policy if such a resolu
tion bo offered by tho Democrats, bn*
the majority of them will fight Civil Hor"
vice Reform, but they will battlo vainly
for Democracy is in tho majority.
Tho Republicans now havo tbo Hennto
by a bare majority, and may piny it for
all it is worth ; but the Democrats already
have it after Mnroh 4th, 187W.
The Republicans may rago but they
cannot help themselves. Democracy
smilingly says : “Gentlemen, you have a
loase for not quite two years. Do yenr
worst, if you please. It will only hurt
you. Tho Houth cannot be injured for
the House is ours. We will undo your
hAd acts, as out yon must go.”
Tho present situation is very cheerful
for tho Houth. Does it not rejoioe the
heart to see tho Blaine-Conkling-Edmunds
c rowd bn tiled and show their teeth in
impotent rage ? The daya of sectional
oppression are euded.
OIMHosm Of AC-TORN*
Edwin Adams a few years ago was one
of the most promising aotors in this coun
try, and his future appeared very bril
liant. Talented, ambitions and hopeful
ho essayed to reach the laurel crown, and
it was almost within his grasp. Many of
our readers remember with pleasure hia
personation of Enoch Arden in Columbus
some four years past. Hinoe then be
went on a starring tour to California and
Las returned home to die of consumption,
wrecked in health and in fortune. Cred
itors were about to seize his only proper
ty. His brother professionals have* step
ped to the roscue and freely contributed
their best acquirements and means for
the alleviation of the condition of their
friend. At the benefit they gave in New
York $7,400 were netted—nearly all paid
by actors. From Philadelphia came
$725 more aud $810 have been realized at
Albany. Hothern aud Company, are about
giving another benefit in Philadelphia.
The dramatic fraternity, have exhibited a
marked generosity, but it is a character
istic of the profession which others hold
ing themselves aloof and (they being
judges; higher in the moral line might
well adopt as an example. Tho knights
and the ladies of the brnkin give more to
charity than any other class of p' ople and
say less about it. It seems to come spon
taneously from the heart. From these
benefits the creditors of Adams have re-
jpfod bills for over $.3,000, and it is be
lieved that the Long Branch property
held by Mr. Adams, consisting of thirty
acres of land pnd two bouses can easily
be cleared of incumbrances. In all finan
cial management Mr. Hothern acts as
immediate business adviser for Mrs. Ad
ams, in conjunction with her lawyer.
Don Cameron Did Evauts.—The
df facto Heoretary of State tried to play
a sharp game on Senator Don Cameron,
but was clearly outwitted. Ho remarked
to Senator Don that tho English mission
belonged to Pennsylvania, and asked him
to suggest a name. Evarts thought of
course Don would name MacVeigb, as
had been most prominently mentioned
connection with tho appointment, and did
not dream for a moment that he had the
cheek to recommend his own father. The
successor of his father was too keen to be
caught by such stuff, and told Mr. Evarts
that he would consult with tho Republi
cans of tho Pennsylvania delegation. lit
did so, worked for it, and obtained their
endorso/nont of old Simon for the mis
sion. This does not agree with the
wishes of the Administration, hut what
are they going to do about it ? The
Camerons are too wily for Evarts, as be
bas ascertained to his cost.
Philadelphia Times: Cassius
Clay, one of the earliest champions of
emancipation in Kentucky, and who
braved much for tho freodom of the slave,
despairs of the improvement of tho con
dition of the race under freodom. Ol
those freed by him many years ago be
says not ono has dono well, and he adds
that tho colored people are rapidly de
creasing in numbers and must finally bo**
come extinct. There is doubtless much
of truth in what he says, but tho case of
the black man isn’t so bopoless as he pre
sents it. Get the race disentangled from
tho toils of tho corrupt politicians who
promise him plunder And stoat his energy,
and let them get down to honest industry
like white folks, and they will do better.
They are not to be judged by the pro
gress they have made under a decade of
carpet- bag rule.
Tweed’s revelations have borne some
fruit. The leading member of tho Re
publican party in tho Now Y’ork Senate
William B. Woodin, whom Tweed
swore had received $20,000 for his vote
the New Y’ork charter. In spite of
this serious charge, tho Republicans of
his Senatorial District ro-nominatod him
for office. It seems that snob evidences
of smartness entitle a Radical to high
oonaideration in the North ns well as in
the Houth. But all the members of the
party could not stand Woodin. So al
though his District is largely Republican,
forced to step down and out, which
ho has already done. Farewell, Woodin.

Tho indications now aro that neither
Spoffortl nor Eustis will bo admitted to
scats in the Senate. The Committee on
Privileges and Elections decided yester
day to reopen the carte from the begin
ning, and tlms wo are to have a rehearsal
of the dreary old story. There can be
nothing pleaded in excuse for this tem
porizing with fraud before the eyes of the
nation bat party necessity. Even the
t ingenious Republican cannot find a
plausible answer to the claim of Mr.
-'.ustia. The whole country longs for the
settlement of the Louisiana and Sonth
Carolina trouble, but the Republican
ominittoo are going to keep the worn*
out subject before the oountry, and re
fuse representation to two States. This
u the very essence of the meaneet
party zeal. The couutry may force them
to action. The independent pro** of the
North, numbering among the most influ
ential journals, have opened their batter
ies aud ate maintaining a hot fire on the
actors in the shameless drama. Even
some of the Republican papers are con
demning it* This causeless delay is suffi
cient to fatigue indignation. The Re

pretty pies—• really shabby trick.
