Comparative Weather.
For the woek ending last night the ave
rage thermometer was (12 degrees, the
highest 78 and lowest 40 and the rain fall
.74 inohes. The same week last year
the average was 04, highest 70, lowest 42
and rain fall 2.18.

A Vary Sertoua Runaway.
Mr. J. U. Smith, with the Singer ma
chine offioo of this oity, was vory oritioally
injured last Monday in Meriwether
county, by being thrown from his buggy
while his horso was “running away.'
Three of his ribs wore broken and one
leg was considerably bruised and out and
bis hoad was horribly mangled. Air.
Smith is still in Moriwetber, and we havo
been informed his condition is of a doubt
ful issue.

How Motet Matt be Written.
A New York correspondence of the
Boston Journal says; The upper ten
hnvc abolished note paper. Elegant oards
are substituted. The oards inches, with
three edges gilt, and the home of the
houno handsomely engraved on the top.
The cards, written baok and front, are
placed into an exaotly fitting envelope
and adorned with a monogram in oolorB
on the baok.
HARRIS COUMTY POINTS.
Col. Hudson is not a candidate for
Stato Senator.
Jungo Williams denies that he ever
knows what a lemon is.
Mr. Ab. Weldon is a candidate for the
Legislature.
Last Thursday night, while Mr. Colum
bus Lnyfield and his family were at sup
per, a negro, George Arrington, outered
the bonso and oarriod off a trunk eontain
ing $274 in money. He oarried the
trunk a short distanoe and broke it opon
with a obisel. George, who is in jail,
confesses the orime and says he gave the
money to his sister, but at this writing
none of it has boon recovered.
The Hamilton Journal, from which we

Mr. J. T. Johnson and his family left
for Columbus last Wednesday morning
and will make a permanent reBidenoe in
thnt city. Mr. Johnson is a prominent
man in our town and county affairs, both
in church and Htato, and his serviues will
bo missed. His family add a great deal
to the sooial world and it is with regret
that wo sco them leave. We wish them
much prosperity in tlieir new homo and
at any time should thoy feel disposed to
return a hearty welcome awaits them here.

Convicted of Murder.
Brown Bowen, who made the attaok at
Pensaoola Junction, and w as subsequently
arrested aud oarried to Texas by Detec
tive W. L. Cash, of this oity, has been
oonvioted of murder. He was the com
panion of the more notorious Hardin.
Bowen was charged with the mnrder of
Thomas lloldeman, in Gonzales county,
in 1873, was tried at Gonzales and a ver-
diot of guilty of mnrder in the first de
gree was returned by the jury. Thia we
learn from the Texas papers whioh reaohed
ns yesterday. He has had a speedy trial,
and the law, no doubt, will be promptly
executed.

on the week. New York barely holding its own,
our market lowered, two k lling frost*, and two
rainy days, and iieuvy sales have been the record
of the past seven days. New York believes in a
r tty large ctop. One of its brokers, Mr. Omrles
Easton, figure* out the returns of tho Southern
Exchanges to mean a crop of 4,100,000. The
Financial Chronicle *frer estimating on the re
ports of the Commissioner of Agriculture concludes
tho total will bo 81.000 more than last year.
Readers can make tlieir own ronc'usions as to the
result. Certainly tho crop is far behind.

a fair business was done at fully previous
prloes; Futures opened with a fair demand
and a very limited supply offering, and by

since then there hns been more desire to sell,
while the demand has fallen off. The market
