mously re-called to the pastorate of

—Governor Colquitt delivered an

the use of his name as a candidate for
the Legislature.
—Bishop Gross dedicated the Cath
olic Church at Sharon, in Taliaferro
county, with appropriate ceremonies
on Sunday, the 4tli Inst.
—There are in the county of Tal
bot seventy-five business houses.
These houses employ at least, one
hundred and fifty able bodied men.
—Senoin has a wagon train to At
lanta on account of excessive charges
ou Central Railroad. The latter
charges 75c per hundred weight and
wagons 35c.
—Mr. John Collier writes tliut he
will be a candidate for Representative
in Fulton county, if called to tiie
office. He will never get it then, for
offices do not cull men.
—The Green Line accedes to the
jietition of the merchants and millers
of Augusta, and that city is to be
placed on a footing with Charleston,
Savannah and Port Royal.
—Mr. Win. Phillips, formally years
city surveyor, diet! last Sunday in
Augusta, aged 73 years. Mr. Phillips
drew two maps of the city of Augusta,
and was noted us ail able engineer.
—Mrs. W. P. Bridges, formerly a
resident of Talbot county, died at the
residence of her husband, Dr. W. P.
Bridges, in Harris county, on Batur-
day. Her remains were carried to
Tul bottom
—Married in Augusta, Mr. William
AV. Jordan, u graduate of Mercer
University, and the beuutiful and
accomplished Miss Belle AV right;
also, Mr. Ruths C. Heggie' and Miss
Vannuh L. Morrison.
—John D. Luke, formerly Post
master at Alapahu, lias been adjudged
a lunatic, and will be sent to the asy
lum when he can be found. Learn
ing the decision of the jury, he disap
peared, and is probably roaming in
an adjoining county.
—Col. H. H. Jones has reconsider
ed his refusal toallow his name to go
before the people in primary election,
as a candidate for the Legislature
from Bibb, and at the urgent request
of many friends has consented to the
wishes of his fellow-citizens.
—At the last meeting of the Town
Council of Talbotton, the Finance
Committee reported returns for one
hundred and sixteen thousand dol
lars of taxable property. A tax of
one dollar and twenty-five cents on
the thousand was assessed by Coun
cil.
—A telephone of a mile in length
is in successful operation in Atlanta
between Prof. Land’s office and his
house. These telephones seem to be
a demonstrated success in every par
ticular, and ure coming into general
use. There is one also, between Au
gusta and Savannah.
—Judge John T. Clarke, after sev
eral ballotings in which the names of
Col. Hood, and several other promi
nent and excellent citizens were
voted for, was pronounced the nomi
nee of the 11th Senatorial District by
a vote 39 to 29. The nomination was
then made unanimous.
—Last Friday Senator Gordon pre
sented the petition of John F. An
drews, of Wilkes county, praying for
the passage of a hill refunding him
the sum of $130 which he was com
pelled to pay on account of the burn
fng of a registered letter, by him
mailed to Atlanta on the 24th of July
1877.
—In Talbot the Agricultural Socie
ty reports of experiments on the best
acre of corn were made: Mrs.
S. A. Carter, 40.) bushels; James Lit
tle, 33 bushels; Win. Culpepper, 34.)
bushels: Rod Leonard, 40 bushels
A. G. Culpepper, 28) bushels. Mr
Finley Holmes gathered 00 bushels to
the acre from bottom land.
—The Senatorial convention which
assembled in Talbotton on the 8th
nominated Dr. John C. Drake, of
Upson county, for Senator of the dis
trict composed of the counties of Up
son, Talbot and Harris. The conven
tion, on motion of J. T. Neal, laid on
the table a resolution of Mr. Rliode-
rick Leonard to ubolish the rotation
system.
—The case of Col. John Jones, late
State Treasurer, lias dragged its slow
length along until it lias reached the
argumentative part. Senator Hill
has made a great argument for Col
Jones, and returned to AVusliington
Other arguments are now in order be
fore Col. J. M. Pace, who was ap
pointed to hear the testimony and
pleadings.
—The Macon Public Library elected
the following officers: President

-—The horse racing at McDonougl:
on last Tuesday evening, terminated
very seriously. Just after the race
and while three or four hundred pei
pie were collected in the streets
man limned Rowan, ran through the
crowd, knocking down and running
over several persons, and seriously
hurting little Charlie Turner and ir
young man by the name of Morris.
His conduct on the occasion was just
ly condemned, and only good luck
and Providence saved the lives of
several parties.
—An investigation at Washington

agement of his office, and, in conse
quence, it hus been decided to ap

estate of AV. R. Moore brought from
$200 to $250 per lot, of 40 by 60 feet.

for five dollars an acre. The Gunn
place, in Talbotton, in which a dow
er is claimed, was sold to Jas. McNeil
for $280. The AV. G. Little planta
tion, containing 915 acres, was sold
at private sale for $5,000, Major Robert
Mutthews being tlie purchaser. Tlie
AVilson Dozier place, two miles from
town, was sold at private snle to
Messrs. AVest Murphy and brothers,
at ten dollars un acre.
—This is the vote taken in the
grand jury of Brooks county, and is
given by them in the form of a para
graph of their general presentment at
tlie recent term of Brooks Superior
-ourt: "Whereas, we are fully im
pressed from tlie geographical posi-
ion of Milledgeville that it is tlie
most convenient site for tlie State
npital, and remembering that the
same was removed from where it laid
eu located by thq. integrity and in
telligence of Georgia, ami from where
it had so long stood, tlie gratification
and pride of our whole people, we
feel that we would be remiss in our
duty did we conclude these present
ments without expressing our earn
est appeal to every citizen of Brooks
county to come to the polls at the

for the removal of the capital of tlie
State back to its original and legiti

—The deatli of Rev. Dr. Lowry,
of Louisville, K., is announced. For
several years he was pastor of the
Presbyterian Church in Selma, which
charge he resigned to take charge of
the principal Presbyterian Church in
.ouisville. He was an eloquent
minister and a good man in every
sense of the word.
Mr. 1. Finch, of Shelby Iron
Works, informed us a day or two
since tliut he had lust finished gather
ing his corn crop, and that tlie yield
surpassed his most sanguine expecta
tions. He had thirty-seven acres in
corn, and tlie average yield per acre
was forty-three bushels—seven of
theseacresaveraged fifty-four bushels.
How is this for Shelby? Who cun
beat it?
—After a full investigation on Tues
day the Commissioners’ Court found
the indebtedness of Macon county of
every form and character, up to date
to be $9,105. There is in (lie treasury
on account of tlie general fund
$403.49, and for tlie compromise of
tlie debt $008.08. It is estimated that
after tlie application of tlie taxes for
tlie present fiscal year, tlie debt can
not exceed $5,0(H) and that at the end
of tlie next year, the county will lie
entirely free from debt.
Montgomery Advertiser : Hon.
W. J. Bray, Mayor of Eufuulu, is in
tlie city, attending tlie United States
Court. Several holders of bonds of
Eufuulu are seeking mandamus or
some other process to compel collec
tion of interest. The city authorities,
through Mayor Bray, are resisting, us
they are trying to compromise tin*
indebtedness. Mr. Pugh and Captain
Bragg represent Eufaula and Messrs.
