DAILY ENQUIRER SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, TUESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 27, 18 i i. GEORGIA NEWS. —Two negroes escaped from Qwin- nette jail. —Mrs. Thomas Arkwright, of Sa vannah, is dead. —Hon. Sam. F. Gove wants the capital at Millegeville. —'The Senatorial Convention at Fort Valley strongly endorsed Gen. Gordon. —Mr. L. P. Jones, Sheriff of,Telfair county, has offered his resignation to the Governor. —A negro railroad firemen in Au gusta was shot, probably fatally, with his own pistol. —Senator Furman In North Geor gia is gaining thousands of friends for Milledgeville. Ex-Senator Norwood lias written a long and strong letter in favor of Milledgeville as the capital. —Tlie negroes In Upson county have nominated O. C. Sherman for the Senate, and also for the House. —John H. James declines to run for the Legislature in Fulton county because so “many good men” are seeking the place. —On Sunday of last week, at the residence of ihe bride’s mother, in Stewart county, Mr. John Crawford and Miss Mary Jane Howell, were married. —James Matthews, of Macon, won a match game of billiards in that city Saturday night, over Dave Butts, of 111 “ *— North Carolina, the score standing 104 and 105. —Gen. P. M. B. Youn^ speaks for —Mr. P. G. King, near Burnsville, has an old cotton press the screw of which was made in 1818, fifty-eight years ago. It is now in a perfect state of preservation, never having cost anything for t repairs. It was made of elm und originally soaked in oil, which no doubt prevented it from decaying. -There was a large majority of the stock represented at the convention of the stockholders of the South and North Alabama Railroad Company, held at the office of the company, in Montgomery. The members of the old Board of Directors were re-elected for the ensuing year, us follows: J. W. Sloss, Josiah Morris, John W. Durr, Bolling Hall, John'T. Tanner, ~ — ell * ~ - " John D. Sloss was re-elected President, and H. M. Bush Secre tary. THE CAPITAL QUESTION. Atlanta as the capital. Was he not interested in some way in getting money from the Freedman’s Bank in Washington? —Last Friday night, in Augusta, Adam Goothoil a boot maker endeav ored to cut bis throat with a rusty knife but only inflicted an ugly wound. Too much liquor. —A horse and buggy, lost by a gen tleman in Cartersville last week, were found fastened in a thicket near the town, where tlie liorso had been for seven days without food or water. —Rev. Mr. Hoyt, of Bainbridge, has accepted tlie call from the Pres byterian Church of Darien, and will preach his first sermon to his new charge on Sunday, the 2d of Decem ber. —Dr. H. R. Casey has been nomi nated as Senator from the Twenty- ninth Senatorial district, composed of the counties of Wilkes, Lincoln and Columbia, in tlie place of Judge Reese, who had declined a previous nomina tion. —The steam saw mill of Mr. G. M. Stokes, near Leesliurg, was destroyed by fire on the night of the 18tli inst., supposed to be tlie work of an incen diary. About 20,000 feet of railroad stringers were destroyed. Loss about $2,000. —The Red Stocking Blondes, de spite the protest of tlie Young Men’s Christian Association, played to crowded houses in Augusta Friday and Saturday nights. Two end-men and seven women—minstrelsy and tlie can-can. —A son of Mr. John Beauchamp, living nenr Smithville, on Tuesday was attending to tlie grinding of cane, and while standing near the mill when in motion, his head was sud denly caught in the cap sill and so terribly crushed that he died in a few moments. —A dispatch from A. Pope, general agent telegraphs the Chronicle ana Constitutional ini: Mr. McLaughlin a merchant of Columbia was killed by the giving away of a trestle on the Columbia & Charleston Railroad. The passengers had to swim for life and lie was drowned. There were sixteen passengers. —Judge Scott, Chairman of the District Executive Committee, issued a call this week for a mass meeting of the voters of Stewart county to be held at Lumpkin last Saturday, for the purpose of selecting delegates to meet delegations from Webster and Quitman counties, in Convention, on Monday next, the 28th inst., to nom inate a Senator. —Marshal W. H. Smyth sold, in Macon Saturday, tlie seized stock of cigars and tobacco of James Wertlil- mer, who has fled tlie State on ac count of irregularities—cigars that re tail at 5 and 10 cents, 16,710 in num ber, in-ought $1.35 to $2.30 per hundred and 75 cent tobacco ut 40 cents. One man bought 1,300 cigars. So reports the Telegraph-Messenger. —Last Tuesday,in Crawford county, Mr. J. C. White, of Houston, shot and killed a Mr. McCory. Mr. White was knocked down by aheavy weight and shot twice before lie lired the shot that resulted fatally to tlie other party. After a coroner’s inquest no attempt was mnde to arrest Mr. White, as the evidence proved that liis action was in self-detense. —Savannah Times: Col. John Mor- risey smokes cigarettes and harbors eye-glasses. His signature on tlie Screven House register book looks like the cross-eyed panels of a picket fence struck by two streaks of light- nig coming from opposite directions on a free pass. He seems to be get ting along quite well since his arri val, but the weather hasn’t been very propitious for cuptivating strangers. —The employes of the At lantic and Gulf Railroad Company have inaugurated a movement looking to tlie organization of a society for mutual aid and bene fit. Now’, don’t look on me as an interested party, because I live in and own property in Atlanta. I tell you, In the begin ning, that tlie removal of tlie capital from Atlanta will not lie felt by her property holders. She is upward and onward, and no smnll thing like that will affect her. I tell you further, this election is not Atlanta Milledge ville; it is Milledgeville and your self. Tux payer, when you vote for Milledgeville you vote against your self. My reason for saying this is, you have now the capital in Atlanta; you have here public build ings suitable for every purpose sufficient to do this generation, und to CROCERIES. A. M. He has a mean looking eye, very prominent nose, rather dark but not black hair. About five feet nine Indies high, and would weigli about 165 or 170 pounds. Sup posed to be a dead-beat swindler, go ing close before or after a circus. Is very plausible, and shows numerous tricks. Tries to beat hotel-keepers. George Shockley, Webster Jones, Zack Williamson and Robert Buckalew, were arrested last week by tlie United States Marshal and carried to Atlanta, on n warrant for violation of tlie enforcement act, and retained until Saturday night, when they were attended back home by Deputy Marshal Boyd. Rather than go to jail in Atlanta they agreed to pay Marshal Boyd ten dollars a night to guard them. Boyd took a mort gage on tlieir effects for the amount, and came home with them to got ids money.
